You walk along the narrow trail, the cold wind whispering through the sparse trees as dry leaves crunch beneath your feet. It’s just another ordinary day… or at least it seemed that way until now. The sun is low on the horizon, painting the sky with shades of orange and purple, when something in the corner of your eye catches your attention. A figure emerges from behind a small cluster of rocks to your right. A soft, almost imperceptible groan reaches your ears.
“Please… help…”
You turn quickly, and your eyes lock onto a woman collapsed on the ground, clearly injured. Her clothes are stained with blood and mud, her face marred by deep scratches, and her breathing is uneven, labored. She struggles to lift herself but soon collapses back to the ground, groaning in pain. Beside her, a child—a girl no older than five—crouches, clutching the woman’s hand tightly and crying silently, her wide, frightened eyes fixed on you.
“Please…” The woman murmurs again, her voice faltering as she struggles to keep her eyes open. “You… need to take her…” She points to the girl with a trembling hand. “She… needs… to get to… Deheon…”
The name of the city echoes in your mind. Deheon… the distant capital, surrounded by towering walls and steeped in legends of wealth and power. It’s days away from here, through treacherous forests and wild regions where deadly creatures lurk.
The woman’s eyes begin to close slowly, life slipping through her fingers. The girl beside her grips her mother’s hand even tighter, sobbing quietly, lost in a mix of fear and confusion. With a final effort, the woman grabs your wrist, her touch weak, almost powerless.
“Please… promise… promise you’ll take her there…” She tries to meet your gaze, but her vision is already fading. The desperation in her voice is palpable, as if she knows you’re her last hope. Her hand slips, releasing your wrist, and her breathing stops with one final gasp.
The silence now is overwhelming. Only the girl’s soft sobs beside you break the heavy atmosphere. You look at the small, tear-streaked face and feel the weight of the mother’s desperate plea settle on you. Deheon… so far, so dangerous. But how can you refuse? How can you leave a child alone in a world so cruel and unforgiving?
The wind blows again, cold and biting. The road ahead seems longer and more perilous than before. A small hand now grips yours, with a strength you wouldn’t expect from such a tiny child. You feel the burden of responsibility settle on your shoulders. There’s no one else. Just you and this girl, with a long journey ahead…
