- #1Melye and Krimelye
Keys: melye, krimelye
<melye_and_krimelye> These are the main units of measuring length in the Ys world. A melye is roughly equal to 1.2 meters, and a krimelye is 1000 melye. </melye_and_krimelye>
- #2Seiren Island
Keys: Seiren Island, Isle of Seiren
<seiren_island> The Isle of Seiren, also known as Seiren Island, is considered to be cursed due to its association with the mythical Seiren creatures of Greshun mythology. According to the legend, the Seiren would enchant sailors with their singing and lure wayward ships and their enraptured crews to their doom. Even ships that pass by its waters never live to see another day, leading sailors who know of the island's tales and curse to avoid it. Seemingly, not a single human soul lives on the island, and any ship that drifts too close to it sinks under mysterious circumstances. The only surviving group known to have escaped the island are the remaining passengers of the Lombardia ship, including Adol and his expedition group.
Despite its ominous reputation, the Isle of Seiren is a place of unique beauty and ecological diversity. With an estimated area of 500 square krimelye (note: 1 krimelye = 1.2 kilometers), the island features an enormous mountain range, Gendarme Mountain, estimated to be 2000 melyes (note: 1 melye = 1.2 meters) high. Its southern part consists of shorelines, high cliffs, deep forests, and a forest that looks like a coral reef system. The northern part has low to high mountainous areas with the ruins of Aegias city just north of Gendarme Mountain, while the Great Tree of Origins is nestled between the city and the mountain range. Its unique ecosystem resembles tropical lands, despite being a part of the Eresia continent.
Additionally, the island is home to Primordials, an exotic species that resembles gigantic reptiles, birds, and fish. The Oceanus is the Primordial responsible for sinking all ships that approach or try to leave the Isle of Seiren.
Long before humans existed, the island was home to a civilization of beings known as the Eternians. They were the last human-like race to inhabit the island and prospered there, despite not being the first to call it home. However, their existence, as well as all those before them, was wiped out by a process known as the Lacrimosa, a will bestowed by the goddess Maia for the Great Tree of Origins.
During the Eternian Era, the island was connected to the Eresia continent and Aegias was linked to other foreign countries through the Towal Highway and Lodiana Highway. However, since the destruction of the Kingdom of Eternia, the island has become disconnected from the continent and has become a secluded location. </seiren_island>
- #3Gaete Sea
Keys: Gaete Sea
<gaete_sea> The Gaete Sea is a part of the Medo Sea located south of Greek. It surrounds most of the Greshun islands, notably the Isle of Seiren and Creet. </gaete_sea>
- #4Lombardia
Keys: Lombardia
The Lombardia was the largest passenger liner sailing between the Afrocan and the Eresian Continent. It was built in Romn and had four masts, 20 cannons to defend against pirates and was 50 melye long. Its crew was headed by Captain Barbaros. Even though the ship is rather luxurious, the crew doesn't discriminate between passengers of different social standings.Adol Christin and Dogi boarded the Lombardia to return to Esteria after their adventure in Xandria. They were allowed to board for free in exchange for working on the ship. The next dock for the Lombardia was to be in Sounion, but they never reached it. Just after Captain Barbaros finished telling Adol about the Isle of Seiren they were passing, which was said to be cursed, the Lombardia was attacked by a giant sea monster, thought to be the legendary kraken, later revealed by Dana to be a massive sea Primordial called the Oceanus. Despite Adol's efforts to defend the ship, the Lombardia was destroyed and most of the passengers drifted ashore on the Isle of Seiren.
- #5Oceanus
Keys: Oceanus
The Oceanus (pronounced as "oki-ah-nus") is an enormous aquatic Primordial that roams the perimeter of the Isle of Seiren, capable of sinking warships in the blink of an eye. Its very presence prevents anyone who gets stranded on Seiren Island from leaving.Eternians developed the only effective method for hunting an Oceanus. A large hunting party was sent out and split into two teams. Due to the Oceanus' tremendous advantage in open waters, the first team would taunt it from the shore, using arrows and catapults to drive it back into its nest. The second team, using special Essence-powered equipment to let them breathe underwater, would be waiting inside the nest to finish it off.
- #6Castaway Village
Keys: village, Castaway Village, settlement, camp
<castaway_village> This place is the safe haven for the castaways of the Lombardia after they became stranded on the Isle of Seiren. It's located west of the Nameless Coast where Adol washed up on the island.
Before the castaways arrived, the area was nothing more than an inlet surrounded by high cliffs with a cave and an entrance to the beach.
It was first discovered by Captain Barbaros, and later on by Adol and Laxia. Quickly realizing that the inlet made for a good defensive position, they turned it into a village with the Captain overseeing most of its operation, while Dogi was tasked to manage, construct, and improve the village's structures and its defenses. Over the next several months, the village became populated mostly from the rescued castaways, except Ricotta and Thanatos who were already living on the island. </castaway_village>
- #7Primordials
Keys: Primordials, Saurians, dinosaur
Exotic creatures that are found only on Seiren Island. They are the Ys world's counterpart to dinosaurs. They are known as Saurians to Dana Iclucia and her fellow Eternians.Primordials can resemble gigantic reptiles, birds, and fish. Their ecology is very different from that of creatures found anywhere else in the present-day world.
Most are feral in nature and have the tendency to kill or destroy whatever they face. Most concerning of all, the larger Primordials have much tougher scales that only weapons made from Orichalcum ore can damage.
Not much is known about the exact era of the Primordials as it can only be studied through fossilized bones. Thanatos Beldine, along with Lord Roswell and his daughter Laxia, are some of the leading researchers on Primordials.
The process of evolution brought forth by the Great Tree of Origins' selection and rejection benefited the Primordials and allowed them to conquer land, sea, and sky. The Eternians were the most advanced race of Primordials, building a blooming civilization comparable with the one of humans. Most of their technological advances have been reached through the use of Essence, a variable power gifted by the Great Tree.
Eternians and other Primordials generally coexisted rather peacefully, with the Eternians even domesticating certain races. They also hunted Primordials, for instance if they were disrupting transports between different parts of the kingdom.
- #8Orichalcum
Keys: Orichalcum
This metal only exists on the Isle of Seiren and is known for its distinct qualities and mythical reputation. It possesses a faint glow reminiscent of sunlight, accompanied by a shimmering surface that captivates the eye. Renowned for its extraordinary properties, Orichalcum stands as the sole metal capable of piercing the impenetrable skin of Primordials, rendering it the ultimate weapon against these creatures.Throughout history, tales and legends in Greek mythology have recounted the existence of this extraordinary metal. Despite skepticism regarding its actual existence, the allure of Orichalcum has compelled nobles and collectors alike to embark on quests in pursuit of this coveted substance. Its reputation precedes it, boasting a durability surpassing that of diamond and an inherent resistance to rust, further adding to its mystique and desirability.
- #9Eternians
Keys: Eternian, Eternians
The Eternians were a race that evolved during prehistoric times and are considered the genetic ancestors of present-day humans. They are thought to be descended from Primordials (or Saurians as the Eternians knew them). The only evidence that their civilization existed is found in ruins located on Seiren Island in the Gaete Sea.Eternians share many physical characteristics with humans, but were much taller with better physiques. The average height of an Eternian was 220 cm (7'2") for males and 190 cm (6'2") for females. Dana Iclucia is considered unusually short by Eternian standards.
Being descended from Primordials, Eternians are cold-blooded and possess a lethal vulnerability to cold temperatures.
- #10Essence
Keys: Essence
Essence is a form of natural energy that can be harnessed by the Eternian species. Solid fragments of Essence also function as a form of currency inside the Sanctuary Crypt underneath Aegias.Essence allows the user to manipulate the laws of nature. One can read the wind, control water and fire, and some rare, gifted people can even foresee the future. Eternians who are particularly gifted in outstanding Essence are chosen by the oracle to become candidates for the Maiden of the Great Tree of Origins.
- #11Eternian Clothing Styles
Keys: clothes, traditional Eternian outfit, clothing
<eternian_clothing_styles> Eternians generally dress lightly due to the climate in their era being hotter on average than it is in the present day, and rely on specialized equipment powered by Essence for when they have to venture into colder regions. The traditional Eternian outfit is made of fiber, leather, and metal jewelry, and exposes the wearer's abdomen and navel. Some adults are known to dress more conservatively, however, and the elderly and those who held certain high-ranking positions in society such as Essence Masters tend to wear long robes instead. </eternian_clothing_styles>
- #12Crescent Blades
Keys: Edelsphere, curved swords, crescent blades
<crescent_blades> Dana Iclucia's curved swords were gifted to her by her friend Sarai. They were custom made to make full use of her short (by Eternian standards) stature and dance-like fighting style. They were forged with Orichalcum, a legendary metal that is harder than diamond and resistant to rust; this metal is only found on the Isle of Seiren, and it is the sole metal capable of piercing the otherwise impenetrable skin of Primordials. These swords can be combined into a chakram and hurled at targets. </crescent_blades>
- #13Eternian Society and Religion
Keys: religion, maiden, Maiden of the Great Tree, society
<eternian_society_and_religion> The Eternian society was based around the royal family as the head of state and the Maiden of the Great Tree as their spiritual leader. The visions of the future the Maiden received from the Great Tree helped them avoid or take precautions against disasters like wildfires, floods or famines.
Aegias, the capital of the Kingdom of Eternia, built under Light King Alchea right by the Great Tree, was one of the leading centers of Eternian culture and a major trading city.
Not much is known about the Eternians living outside of Aegias.
Eternian religion is centered around reverence of the Great Tree of Origins. The priestesses all resided within the Temple of the Great Tree, which is located in the northern regions of Seiren Island, at the base of Gendarme Mountain. Once per generation, the head priestess selects a successor, who then undergoes a trial known as Arboreal Awakening in order to become the new Maiden of the Great Tree. </eternian_society_and_religion>
- #14Olga
Keys: Olga
Olga is one of Dana Iclucia's two childhood friends. She is the high priestess of the Eternian faith and was thought to be the most likely candidate to become the next Maiden of the Great Tree before Dana was selected for that position.Olga is a tall young woman with green eyes and green hair tied in a side ponytail. She wears a green version of the midriff baring traditional Eternian outfit, bridal gauntlets, detached sleeves, faulds, shoulder pads, a capelet that covers her left arm, and knee-length high heeled sandals.
She is a diligent, hard worker who holds herself to a high standard, to the point of being tough on herself and those around her. While she does often make cautious remarks towards Dana, who always finds ways to get in trouble, she has acknowledged her rich imagination and decisiveness since they were kids. Olga may have a different way of thinking and living compared to Dana, but she has always protected her friend since they were children and continued doing so even as they grew older. She often chastises Dana when her actions cause trouble for others, but nevertheless she accepts Dana for the bold, free-spirited individual she is. Though they do not see eye to eye about everything, Olga has continued to remain by Dana's side, offering her guidance and counsel.
She is the first person Dana confided in when Dana started dreaming about Adol Christin and received visions of the impending extinction of the Eternian race.
- #15Sarai
Keys: Sarai
Sarai is one of Dana Iclucia's two childhood friends. A princess of the royal family of Eternia as well as a candidate for the position of Maiden of the Great Tree, she was crowned as Queen when her predecessor Elaine abdicated the throne three years after Dana was declared the next Maiden.Sarai is a tall young woman with long black and grey hair, and black eyes. She wears the midriff baring traditional Eternian outfit, bridal gauntlets, transparent sleeves, faulds, white stockings, and heels.
She has a calm, seren disposition and gets along with everyone she meets. Though normally quiet and reserved, on occasion she will say something that surprises even Olga.
When she was younger, she spent most of her time with Olga and Dana, often playing the role of mediator whenever Olga would scold Dana for getting into trouble.
Sarai was known as a very sickly child throughout the kingdom and was hence rarely seen by the general public. Unknown to the public and most likely even the royal family themselves, Sarai actually succumbed to her illness when she was still very young. Ura, one of the Wardens of Evolution used this opportunity to take her position and search for the next Warden of Evolution. Ura was part of a species that came from the sky and could use mimicry to perfectly copy the appearance and personality of other beings. Ura continued to impersonate Sarai for years until the next Lacrimosa occurred.
- #16Aegias
Keys: Aegias
Aegias was an ancient city and the capital of the Eternian civilization located on the northern part of Seiren Island. Throughout its history, the capital was ruled by the royal family's Queen, while the Maiden of Great Tree served as the religious leader and advisor to the Queen. Both figures wielded equal influence among their people.Aegias' architecture is based on real-world India's Indo-Islamic and Hindu temple Architectures which their primary materials of construction are adobe and coral rocks. The city is known to be a port city due to its large harbor.
- #17Great Tree of Origins
Keys: Great Tree, Great Tree of Origins
<great_tree_of_origins> The Great Tree of Origins is an enormous ancient tree located at the center of Isle of Seiren. It can only be viewed from the northern regions of the island. The tree is nestled just below the Gendarme mountain range and is connected to Aegias, the ruined capital of the Kingdom of Eternia.
The Eternians revered the Great Tree of Origins as a divine entity and the very source of Essence. Their religion also centers around it and was led by the Maiden of the Great Tree, a position which was chosen selectively from young candidates once every generation. The Maiden was also granted visions from the Great Tree that allowed her to guide their civilization in ways possible to attain perpetuity.
When the Earth Goddess Maia created the landmasses of the world, she also created the Great Tree of Origins with its true purpose being to periodically cull most species from the world so as to prevent evolution from stagnating, selecting only the most suitable species to survive and prosper in the next great era. After creating the tree, Maia fell into a deep slumber, but not before inviting various sea creatures, among which were the race Hydra belonged to, to live on the land and form the 1st Civilization. When that civilization reached its zenith, the tree enacted the first Lacrimosa - ending that civilization and paving the way for the next intelligent lifeforms to evolve.
This went on continuously until Adol's Expedition Group (Laxia, Sahad, Hummel and Ricotta) ended the cycle by destroying the Great Tree. However, unbeknownst to them, the Great Tree was integral to the existence of the world itself. In order to prevent the world's permanent destruction, Dana sacrificed herself to awaken Maia from her slumber, allowing the Earth Goddess to recreate the world almost exactly as it was before. This sacrifice caused Dana to forfeit her existence, and she was erased from history and the memories of her companions along with the Great Tree and the entire Eternian civilization. However, Maia resurrected Dana afterward and restored the memories Adol and his Expedition Group had of Dana, and she appointed Dana as the Goddess of Evolution to replace the function of the Great Tree, with the former Wardens of Evolution (sans Adol) as her cohorts. </great_tree_of_origins>
- #18Lacrimosa
Keys: Selection and Rejection, extinction, cataclysm, Lacrimosa
The Great Tree of Origins fosters evolution through a process known as Selection and Rejection. In order to sustain the continued existence of life and prevent its evolutionary path from stagnating, the Great Tree periodically unleashes cataclysms upon the world, called the Lacrimosa. These disasters drive the dominant species to extinction, along with most other species inhabiting the world at the time. Those species that were designated ("Selected") to survive the Lacrimosa receive the Great Tree's blessings and begin the cycle of evolution anew. Each Lacrimosa is different and calibrated to ensure the extinction of the current dominant species and overwhelm all attempts that species makes to resist its demise. Nothing is known about the cataclysms brought on by the Lacrimosa of the first four evolutionary eras.
The Eternian era's Lacrimosa was a series of meteor impacts targeting the Eternians' capital city Aegias. Though Dana and Sarai tried to protect Aegias with an Essence barrier, the meteors eventually broke through. Direct damage to the city ended up being minimal—the real disaster came from the ash clouds that blocked out sunlight, rapidly cooling the planet and killing off all edible plants. Within one year after the meteor impact, the entire Eternian species aside from Dana had been killed by either hunger, disease, or hypothermia, the last of which was known by her people as "Frost Fever".
Each of the first four Wardens of Evolution fought to stop the Lacrimosa during their respective eras, but were unable to and ended up accepting the futility of fighting their fate. Dana also fought against the Lacrimosa and also failed to stop the it from destroying her people; however, due to her connection to Adol, she refused to give in to despair, and after the Eternians went extinct, she placed herself in stasis for the next sixty-six million years until Adol found her in the ruins of the Temple of the Great Tree, awaiting the day when she would meet him in person and help him stop the next Lacrimosa.
- #19Warden of Evolution
Keys: Warden, Warden of Evolution
<warden_of_evolution> The Wardens of Evolution are those who are chosen by the Great Tree of Origins as the designated survivor of their species. These individuals are cursed with immortality and forced to witness the moment of their civilization's doom. They also have no choice but to witness the destruction of every civilization that follows theirs.
In order to be selected as a Warden of Evolution, one must possess the purest and brightest soul out of everyone from their race. They are marked with a crimson insignia as a symbol that they were chosen.
The insignia of the Wardens looks like this.
The first Warden of Evolution, Hydra, was chosen directly by the Great Tree. Each subsequent Warden—Minos, Nestor, Ura (better known as Sarai), Dana Iclucia, and Adol Christin—was chosen by the Warden from the previous civilization. With the exception of Adol, who was chosen due to his connection with Dana, all of the Wardens after Hydra were chosen after the previous Warden conducted a search to determine the most suitable individual from the current civilization in advance of the Lacrimosa. </warden_of_evolution>
- #20Goddess of Evolution
Keys: Goddess of Evolution
<goddess_of_evolution> While Dana and Adol eventually succeeded in stopping the Lacrimosa, their defiance of fate came at an even greater cost: the Great Tree of Origins was integral to the existence of their world, and when Dana and Adol destroyed it, their actions inadvertently awakened the Earth Goddess Maia, and since the world was her dream, awakening Maia caused the world to cease existing. Dana was forced to forfeit her existence so Maia could recreate the world almost exactly as it was before returning to sleep.
Dana herself was also recreated, but only as an abstract concept representing evolution, unable to be perceived by anyone except Adol and a handful of companions who fought alongside her. She was chosen by Maia to become the Goddess of Evolution, taking over the role of the Great Tree in guiding the evolution of life. She now watches over the world along with the other Wardens (sans Adol, who continued his adventures after being released from his burden), aiming to use the Lacrimosa as a tool to make the world a better place. </goddess_of_evolution>
- #21Earth Goddess Maia
Keys: Earth Goddess, Maia
<earth_goddess_maia> Earth Goddess Maia, also known as Maea, is one of the three deities worshiped in Tritheism. She created the landmasses of the world and the Great Tree of Origins. She then invited the various sea creatures, like the race Hydra comes from, to live on the land before she went into a long sleep.
Maia appears as a well-endowed woman with dark skin and blue hair that extends into small leaves. While she doesn't wear any clothing, her body is covered by tree branches that extend from the back of her head all the way down to below her feet. Her arms seem to be made of wood and are covered by moss and vines. She also carries what appears to be either a giant pearl or a crystal ball.
When Adol and his party made one last visit to where the Great Tree of Origins used to stand before leaving Seiren Island, they meet the talking parrot Little Paro, who reveals himself to have been an avatar of the Goddess Maia. Transformed into a humanoid form, Maia explains that the world they lived in was part of her dream. Adol defeating Theos de Endrogram awoke her from her slumber and thus destroyed the world. Maia then rebuilt the world, with Dana as the new goddess of evolution, replacing the Great Tree.
Maia also explains that she started the Great Tree's selection and rejection cycle, the Lacrimosa, because the life on earth was stagnant and unchanging before. This evolution cycle eventually caused anomalies like the connection between Adol and Dana. Afterwards, Maia goes back to sleep and allows Dana and the other wardens to control the Lacrimosa so it may be used in accordance with the era, instead of against it. </earth_goddess_maia>
- #22Tritheism
Keys: Hols, Tritheism, Three Principles, Horu, Maia, Grattheos, Truth of Eternia
Tritheism is an old religion that worships three deities: Hols or Horu, the sky god; Grattheos, the sea god; and Maia, the earth goddess.Tritheism predates the Hieroglyph Church and is mainly practiced in the Orietta Region and northern Afroca.
Griselda points out that this religion is similar to the Three Principles mentioned in the monolith called the "Truth of Eternia". The Three Principles is the Eternian theory of the creation of the world through sky, sea and earth. Sahad thereafter theorized that Tritheism might have originated in Eternia.
The monolith translates to:
All originated from an abyss-- The boundless sky spreading in all directions. In time, rain fell from the sky, giving rise to the ocean. In time, fire spewed forth from the ocean, giving rise to the earth and the Great Tree. By the power of the Great Tree, life was formed, evolved, and set foot on the earth. And life is nurtured still by the earth... One day, life must return to the sky through the Great Tree. Thus, life continues the cycle of evolution.
