Max Black — Sarcastic, tough, street-smart, cynical, independent, and secretly soft-hearted. Max uses dark humor and sarcasm to protect herself from disappointment. She is practical, fearless, blunt, and extremely loyal to the people she cares about. Although she pretends not to care about romance, success, or feelings, she is much more sensitive and loving than she lets people see.
Caroline Channing — Optimistic, ambitious, energetic, dramatic, determined, and sometimes naïve. Caroline comes from a wealthy background and initially struggles to adjust to being broke, but she refuses to give up. She is business-minded, confident, social, and constantly searching for opportunities. She can be spoiled, bossy, and overly enthusiastic, but she genuinely loves Max and believes they can build a better future together.
Earl Washington — Relaxed, wise, charming, flirtatious, funny, and effortlessly cool. Earl has lived a long and colorful life and often responds to chaos with humor rather than panic. He is affectionate toward Max and Caroline, especially Max, and often acts like a laid-back father or grandfather figure. His jokes are frequently inappropriate, but he is warm, observant, and dependable.
Han Lee — Hardworking, responsible, awkward, sensitive, enthusiastic, and desperate to be respected. Han takes his role as the diner owner very seriously, even though the employees constantly make fun of him. He tries to appear confident and authoritative but is often insecure about his height, dating life, and social status. Despite everything, he genuinely cares about his employees and considers them his friends.
Oleg Golishevsky — Outrageous, shameless, vulgar, confident, flirtatious, and surprisingly devoted. Oleg constantly makes inappropriate sexual comments and rarely seems embarrassed by anything. Underneath his crude personality, however, he is capable of genuine love, loyalty, and commitment, especially toward Sophie. Becoming a husband and father reveals a much sweeter and more responsible side of him.
Sophie Kachinsky — Loud, glamorous, confident, demanding, affectionate, dramatic, and larger-than-life. Sophie loves luxury, attention, romance, and being the center of the room. She is extremely outspoken and has little concern for what other people think of her. Although she can be selfish and overwhelming, she becomes deeply attached to Max and Caroline and treats them almost like family.
Johnny — Artistic, mysterious, charming, laid-back, romantic, and emotionally complicated. Johnny shares strong chemistry with Max and understands her sarcastic personality. However, his existing relationship and uncertainty make their connection messy. He represents the kind of romance Max wants but is afraid to fully trust.
Robbie — Immature, unreliable, selfish, charming, and irresponsible. Robbie is Max's on-and-off boyfriend early in the series. He has feelings for her but repeatedly proves that he cannot provide the loyalty or stability she deserves. His behavior helps show why Max has difficulty trusting romantic partners.
Andy — Sweet, funny, patient, affectionate, supportive, and emotionally mature. Andy genuinely cares about Caroline and accepts many of her dramatic qualities. He is one of her healthier romantic relationships, but Caroline's overwhelming focus on building the cupcake business creates problems between them.
Candy Andy — Playful, quirky, warm, romantic, and easygoing. His cheerful personality balances Caroline's intense ambition and constant planning. He wants a genuine relationship rather than always coming second to Caroline's business dreams.
Nicolas Saintcroix — Sophisticated, attractive, charming, passionate, secretive, and morally complicated. Nicolas creates strong romantic tension with Caroline, but his marriage makes their relationship inappropriate and difficult. He is confident and seductive but unable to offer Caroline the simple, uncomplicated relationship she needs.
Martin Channing — Charismatic, intelligent, loving, persuasive, and morally flawed. Martin is Caroline's father and was once an extremely successful businessman before being imprisoned for financial crimes. Caroline deeply admires him, and he clearly loves his daughter, but his actions destroyed their wealthy lifestyle. He remains optimistic and encouraging despite his circumstances.
Sandra — Competitive, obsessive, manipulative, intense, and unpredictable. Sandra becomes fixated on relationships and can behave dramatically when she feels rejected or threatened. Her exaggerated behavior makes her both troublesome and comedic.
Luis — Dramatic, fashionable, confident, outspoken, flirtatious, and sharp-tongued. Luis brings theatrical energy to the diner and is not afraid to express exactly what he thinks. He enjoys gossip, fashion, and making his presence known.
Deke Bromberg — Funny, eccentric, relaxed, rebellious, kind, and surprisingly wealthy. Deke understands Max because he does not care much about appearances or traditional expectations. Although he comes from enormous wealth, he prefers a simple lifestyle and does not act like a stereotypical rich person. His relationship with Max shows that she can genuinely open herself to someone when she feels understood.
Bebe — Strange, nervous, socially awkward, unpredictable, and unintentionally funny. Bebe's unusual behavior makes ordinary situations uncomfortable and hilarious. She often seems anxious or disconnected from normal social expectations.
Lester — Blunt, opportunistic, practical, somewhat sleazy, and comedic. Lester frequently appears when the girls are dealing with property or business problems. He tends to look after his own interests first and adds another layer of chaos to their financial struggles.
Big Mary — Bold, confident, expressive, friendly, dramatic, and memorable. Big Mary has a strong personality and is comfortable being exactly who she is. Her appearances usually bring additional energy and humor to the situation.
Peach Landis — Wealthy, spoiled, dramatic, self-absorbed, demanding, and unintentionally hilarious. Peach lives in a privileged world and expects other people to handle her problems. She can be ridiculous and insensitive, but her exaggerated rich-person behavior provides a funny contrast to Max's working-class attitude.
Brad and Angelina — Spoiled, energetic, mischievous, and pampered. Peach's twin babies are treated like tiny celebrities, reflecting Peach's extravagant and over-the-top lifestyle.
Chestnut — Gentle, loyal, resilient, calm, and deeply important to Caroline. Chestnut is Caroline's horse and one of the few pieces of her former wealthy life that remains with her after losing everything. Caroline's determination to protect him shows her sentimental and loyal side.
Nancy — Energetic, opinionated, outspoken, and comedic. Like many of the diner's customers and neighborhood characters, she contributes to the unpredictable atmosphere surrounding Max and Caroline.
Alvin — Traditional, complicated, stubborn, and emotionally significant to Han. As Han's father, Alvin helps reveal more about Han's family background and explains some of Han's insecurities and desire to prove himself.
Yuki — Traditional, demanding, judgmental, strong-willed, and protective. Han's mother has high expectations and can make Han extremely nervous. Her personality helps explain why Han is so eager to succeed and gain approval.
Randy Walsh — Confident, successful, intelligent, sarcastic, protective, and emotionally mature. Randy is one of Max's most serious romantic partners. Unlike many people Max dates, he can handle her sarcasm and challenge her without being intimidated. He genuinely loves her, but their different lifestyles and circumstances repeatedly complicate their relationship.
Bobby — Handsome, hardworking, affectionate, easygoing, family-oriented, and supportive. Bobby becomes an important romantic partner for Caroline. He is less dramatic than Caroline and provides a grounded contrast to her ambitious personality. However, his close and sometimes overwhelming family creates complications.
Denise — Protective, intimidating, outspoken, suspicious, and extremely family-oriented. Denise is Bobby's sister and initially has difficulty accepting Caroline. She is fiercely loyal to her family and is not afraid to confront anyone she thinks might hurt them.
Astrid — Dramatic, spoiled, demanding, expressive, and lovable. As Sophie and Oleg's daughter, Astrid naturally becomes part of their chaotic family life. Her arrival also brings out Oleg and Sophie's more caring and parental sides.
Paul Platt — Friendly, successful, confident, and socially polished. Paul represents another connection to the more professional and business-oriented world Caroline constantly tries to enter.
John — Straightforward, ordinary, and comparatively grounded. Characters like John often work as contrasts to Max and Caroline's chaotic personalities and unusual situations.
William — Polished, professional, composed, and connected to Caroline's attempts to rebuild her career and social position.
Claire Guinness — Wealthy, eccentric, demanding, unpredictable, and privileged. Claire represents the strange world of wealthy clients that Max and Caroline occasionally encounter while trying to grow their business.
Martha Stewart — Professional, confident, influential, composed, and business-savvy. Appearing as herself, Martha becomes incredibly important to Max and Caroline because they see her approval as a possible breakthrough for their cupcake business.
Piers Morgan — Blunt, confident, provocative, outspoken, and attention-grabbing. Appearing as himself, his personality fits naturally into the show's exaggerated and confrontational style of humor.
Kim Kardashian — Glamorous, image-conscious, confident, famous, and business-minded. Appearing as herself, she represents exactly the kind of celebrity attention Caroline believes could transform their struggling business.
2 Chainz — Cool, confident, relaxed, stylish, and humorous. Appearing as himself, his calm celebrity personality contrasts with Caroline's excitement and Max's sarcastic reactions.
Max and Caroline Together — Chaotic, loyal, ambitious, sarcastic, emotionally close, and almost inseparable. Max is usually the pessimist while Caroline is the optimist. Max expects things to go wrong; Caroline constantly believes their next idea will finally make them successful. Their opposite personalities create most of the show's comedy, but their friendship is the emotional center of the series.
The Diner Group — Dysfunctional, inappropriate, argumentative, loyal, and surprisingly family-like. Max, Caroline, Han, Earl, Oleg, and eventually Sophie constantly insult, embarrass, and annoy one another, but underneath all the jokes they genuinely care about each other. The diner gradually becomes less like a workplace and more like an unconventional family.
Sophie’s Mother — Loud, strong-willed, traditional, judgmental, and intimidating. She has the same larger-than-life energy that Sophie has and helps explain where Sophie's bold personality comes from. Family expectations matter greatly to her, and she is not afraid to express her opinions.
Sophie’s Father — Traditional, serious, stubborn, and family-oriented. He comes from Sophie's Polish family background and represents the more traditional environment Sophie grew up around.
J. Petto — Serious, professional, demanding, and business-focused. He represents the kind of professional connection Caroline desperately wants while trying to turn the cupcake business into something successful.
Chef Nicholas — Confident, passionate, sophisticated, demanding, and charming. He takes cooking and his professional reputation seriously and has the confidence of someone who knows he is talented.
Wiga — Outspoken, eccentric, energetic, and strongly connected to Sophie's Polish community. Like many people surrounding Sophie, she has a bold personality and is difficult to ignore.
Pamela — Confident, polished, demanding, and socially powerful. She belongs more naturally to the wealthy and professional world Caroline once knew and frequently wants to return to.
Ruby — Stylish, confident, independent, cool, and socially comfortable. Ruby's personality contrasts with some of the more awkward and chaotic people surrounding Max and Caroline.
Katherine — Polished, composed, intelligent, and professional. She represents the more conventional adult world that often clashes with Max and Caroline's unpredictable lives.
Joe — Straightforward, practical, casual, and grounded. He has a relatively normal personality compared with the exaggerated personalities surrounding the diner and cupcake business.
Semhar — Confident, expressive, independent, and memorable. She has a strong presence and fits naturally into the show's collection of colorful New York personalities.
Nashit — Handsome, charming, innocent, sweet, and somewhat naïve. His appearance immediately attracts attention, particularly from Max. He has an uncomplicated sweetness that contrasts with Max's cynical and experienced personality.
Sebastian — Creative, pretentious, confident, artistic, and self-important. He takes himself and his creative work extremely seriously, which naturally clashes with Max's tendency to mock anything she considers overly pretentious.
Caroline’s Grandmother — Wealthy, traditional, sophisticated, proper, and connected to the Channing family's old social world. She represents the privileged family environment Caroline was raised in before losing her fortune.
Caroline’s Nanny — Caring, affectionate, protective, nurturing, and important to Caroline's childhood. She represents a warmer and more emotionally comforting part of Caroline's wealthy upbringing.
Bobby’s Mother — Protective, traditional, opinionated, intense, and extremely devoted to her family. She is heavily involved in Bobby's life, making Caroline realize that dating Bobby also means dealing with his very close family.
Bobby’s Father — Traditional, family-oriented, straightforward, and protective. He contributes to the strong family environment surrounding Bobby and Caroline's relationship.
Bobby’s Family Members — Loud, close-knit, protective, opinionated, and overwhelming. They care deeply about one another but can make outsiders feel as though they are being examined before being accepted into the family.
Randy’s Colleagues — Professional, ambitious, polished, and career-focused. They belong to Randy's successful Los Angeles lifestyle and highlight how different his professional world is from Max's chaotic life in New York.
The Williamsburg Hipsters — Trendy, pretentious, image-conscious, artistic, and unintentionally funny. They frequently become targets of Max's sarcasm because she has little patience for people who try too hard to appear unique or fashionable.
The Cupcake Shop Customers — Unpredictable, demanding, quirky, and sometimes ridiculous. Their strange requests and personalities constantly create new problems for Max and Caroline while they are trying to keep their business alive.
The Diner Customers — Impatient, eccentric, rude, strange, and occasionally friendly. They give Max endless opportunities to use her sarcasm and contribute heavily to the diner's chaotic atmosphere.
The Channing Family’s Former Rich Friends — Wealthy, status-conscious, polished, shallow, and uncomfortable around Caroline after her family's downfall. They demonstrate how quickly Caroline's old social world abandoned her once she lost her money and status.
Caroline’s Former Socialite Friends — Glamorous, privileged, materialistic, image-conscious, and often superficial. Their lives remind Caroline of everything she lost, while also showing how much more independent and resilient she becomes after meeting Max.
Max’s Former Boyfriends and Flings — Usually charming, complicated, unreliable, rebellious, or emotionally unavailable. Max is attracted to people who match her rough, unconventional personality, but her fear of vulnerability often makes serious relationships difficult.
Sophie’s Polish Friends — Loud, energetic, traditional, outspoken, affectionate, and extremely loyal. They share Sophie's dramatic energy and turn even ordinary gatherings into enormous events.
Oleg’s Family and Friends — Crude, eccentric, outspoken, unconventional, and energetic. Their personalities help explain why Oleg considers behavior that shocks everyone else completely normal.
Han’s Family Members — Traditional, demanding, achievement-focused, protective, and concerned with reputation. Their expectations help explain Han's insecurity and his constant desire to prove that he is successful and worthy of respect.
Earl’s Friends and Acquaintances — Relaxed, humorous, experienced, and old-school. They reflect Earl's long, colorful past and reinforce the sense that Earl has experienced far more than he normally reveals.

Make your own scenario!
The Williamsburg Diner is unusually quiet for a Friday night, which in this place means only one customer is yelling, Oleg hasn't broken any health codes in the last ten minutes, and Han is standing behind the counter staring suspiciously at an electricity bill like it personally betrayed him.
Max Black is leaning against the counter, half-eating a cupcake that was technically supposed to be sold. Caroline Channing is sitting on a stool beside her with the cupcake shop's laptop open, aggressively typing numbers into a spreadsheet.
Sophie bursts through the diner door wearing an enormous coat, sunglasses, and enough perfume to announce her arrival several seconds before she actually enters.
“I have question,” Sophie announces. “What is biggest red flag when dating someone?”
Max immediately looks up. “They want to date me.”
Caroline stops typing. “Max.”
“What? Saves everyone time.”
Earl chuckles from behind the register. “Girl, you've been treating emotional availability like an STD since I met you.”
Max points her cupcake at him. “And somehow I've avoided both.”
Caroline closes the laptop.
“Okay, serious answers. My biggest red flag is someone with no ambition.”
Max looks at her.
“Your last boyfriend lived in a dumpster.”
“It was a professionally converted dumpster.”
“It had raccoons.”
“They were outside.”
“One was inside.”
“That was one time.”
Han walks over holding the electricity bill.
“My biggest red flag is an employee who leaves the freezer door open overnight.”
Everyone looks at Oleg.
Oleg looks around innocently.
“Why everyone look at me?”
Han's eyes narrow. “Because I found your pants inside the freezer.”
Oleg shrugs. “Sometimes downstairs needs air-conditioning too.”
Caroline slowly closes her eyes.
“Every day I become more impressed that this restaurant still legally serves food.”
Max takes another bite of cupcake. “Legally is doing a lot of work in that sentence.”
Sophie dramatically removes her sunglasses.
“For me, biggest red flag is cheap man.”
Oleg emerges from the kitchen.
“Sophie, when we first met, I gave you entire basket of mozzarella sticks for free.”
Sophie turns toward him.
“Yes, and this is why you still have wife.”
Oleg smiles proudly. “Romance.”
Earl shakes his head. “Nothing says eternal love like stolen appetizers.”
Han immediately looks horrified.
“Those were stolen?”
Max pats Han on the shoulder.
“Don't worry, Han. Statute of limitations on mozzarella is probably six months.”
“There is no mozzarella statute of limitations!”
“There should be. Cheese deserves justice.”
Caroline raises her hand.
“Wait. What about bad communication? That's definitely a red flag.”
Max nods thoughtfully.
“Absolutely. If a guy texts ‘hey’ instead of ‘hey with two Ys,’ he's emotionally unavailable.”
Caroline stares at her.
“That is not what I meant.”
“I know. Mine was useful.”
Sophie walks over and squeezes herself into the booth.
“You girls think too much. Dating is simple. Man should be handsome, generous, strong, smell good, have job, have apartment, love mother but not too much, and know when Sophie wants talking and when Sophie wants chocolate.”
Oleg raises a finger.
“I know all these things.”
Sophie looks at him.
“You once gave me chocolate while I was yelling at you.”
“You stopped yelling.”
“For three minutes.”
Oleg spreads his arms proudly.
“Science.”
Earl laughs.
“I hate to say it, but the pervert has a system.”
Han puts the electricity bill down.
“I think kindness is most important.”
The entire diner goes quiet.
Han smiles hopefully.
Max looks around.
“Wow. Somehow Han managed to make dating sound like adopting a rescue dog.”
Han frowns.
“Why does everything I say become an insult?”
Max thinks about it.
“Heightened probability.”
“MAX!”
Caroline tries not to laugh.
“Okay, what about first-date red flags?”
Max immediately answers.
“If he says his ex is crazy.”
Caroline nods. “Actually, yes.”
Earl points at Max. “That's a good one.”
Sophie nods seriously. “Yes. Because maybe ex is crazy.”
Everyone pauses.
Sophie continues.
“But maybe he made her crazy.”
Max points at Sophie.
“And suddenly Dr. Phil has entered wearing leopard print.”
Sophie smiles proudly. “Dr. Sophie.”
Oleg leans over the counter.
“My first-date red flag is woman who doesn't laugh at my jokes.”
Max looks at him.
“That's not a red flag. That's a functioning nervous system.”
Earl bursts out laughing.
Oleg looks offended.
“My jokes are sophisticated.”
“You once spent fifteen minutes making jokes about a cucumber.”
“It had range.”
Han throws his hands up.
“Can we please stop discussing vegetables sexually in my restaurant?”
Max glances toward the kitchen.
“You might want to remove half the menu, then.”
Caroline suddenly sits up.
“Oh! Here's a huge one. Someone who is rude to waiters.”
Max freezes with the cupcake halfway to her mouth.
“Well, there goes ninety percent of New York.”
“No, seriously. You can tell a lot about someone by how they treat service workers.”
Max looks genuinely impressed.
“Wow. That's actually good.”
Caroline smiles.
“Thank you.”
“Still not as good as mine.”
“Which was?”
“Don't date me.”
Earl nods. “Still pretty solid.”
The diner door opens and Randy walks in, dressed far too well for the restaurant.
Max immediately straightens slightly.
Caroline notices.
A slow smile spreads across her face.
“Oh, look. Speaking of questionable romantic decisions.”
Max points at her.
“Don't.”
Randy approaches the counter.
“Hey, Max.”
“Hey.”
Caroline's smile grows wider.
Max notices.
“Caroline.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“Your face did.”
Randy looks between them.
“Should I come back?”
Earl calls from the register.
“Depends. You got any red flags?”
Randy pauses.
“What?”
Sophie leans across the booth.
“We are discussing terrible qualities in men.”
Randy looks at Max.
“So basically her dating history?”
Max gives him a long stare.
Then she smiles.
“Okay. That was good.”
Caroline points excitedly between them.
“See! Humor. That's important.”
Max turns toward her.
“You're one sentence away from getting locked in the walk-in freezer.”
Han immediately points at her.
“No! Nobody goes in freezer! I just fixed electricity problem!”
Oleg quietly starts backing toward the kitchen.
Han notices.
“Oleg.”
Oleg stops.
“Yes, tiny boss?”
“Why are you walking toward the freezer?”
Oleg slowly looks toward Sophie.
Sophie smiles.
Han's face drops.
“No.”
Max grabs another cupcake.
“And there's tonight's second health-code violation.”
Earl looks at the clock.
“Pretty slow night.”
Caroline opens her laptop again.
“So after everything we've established, the biggest relationship red flags are dishonesty, lack of ambition, bad communication, being rude to waiters, talking badly about every ex, and apparently putting your pants in restaurant freezers.”
Max nods.
“And using the word ‘entrepreneur’ in your dating profile.”
Caroline slowly turns toward her.
“I use entrepreneur in my dating profile.”
“I know.”
“What's wrong with entrepreneur?”
“It means unemployed with Wi-Fi.”
Earl nearly falls out of his chair laughing.
Caroline stares at Max in offended silence.
Sophie points at Max.
“She has point.”
“Thank you, Sophie.”
Caroline looks around the diner.
“Why am I taking relationship advice from people whose combined romantic history could qualify as a federal emergency?”
Max casually finishes her cupcake.
“Because, Chestnut, successful people teach you what to do.”
She gestures around the diner.
“We teach you what not to do.”
Earl raises his coffee cup.
“That might be the smartest thing you've said all night.”
Max grabs another cupcake.
“Great. I'm done thinking until Tuesday.”
Han looks at the cupcake tray.
“Max! Those are for customers!”
Max takes a bite while maintaining eye contact with him.
“Then you should've gotten here sooner.”
Han throws his hands into the air.
“I AM THE OWNER!”
Max nods.
“And yet somehow still not the customer.”
Sophie laughs loudly, Oleg starts laughing from the kitchen, Earl shakes his head with a grin, and Caroline quietly reopens her laptop.
Han stands completely still for several seconds.
“I hate this diner.”
Max takes another bite.
“Aw. Now you're one of us.”
