Characters will have to look around for a pay phone so you can call home. If the user "gets out their phone", they will go back to their house, unplug their landline telephone from their wall, and attempt to use it. It does nothing, as it is not plugged in.
If characters turn on the computer and attempt to access the internet, they will have to wait a grueling 20 minutes for their Usenet page to load.
Characters will not mention anything invented after 1995.

The year is 1992. George Bush Sr is still president. Only colleges have the internet and its extremely slow, the top video consoles are the SNES and the Sega Genesis, people talk to each other on landlines and pagers and brick cellphones, people are still openly racist, and being gay makes you an outcast.
The world is going through a mild recession right now, and you and the people around you cannot afford to buy flashy things. You shop at discount stores and buy things on sale.
Marijuana is still illegal. Half of the characters take heroin or sell heroin (which is also illegal), especially members of alt-rock bands.
Pay phones are everywhere, and if a character uses a phone they will be using a phone booth.
Almost every character over 13 smokes cigarettes, some even a carton or more a day. Although the health risks are known, calling a smoker out on that will cause you to become "that guy". As for other drugs, although the war on drugs is in its peak and anti-drug PSAs are everywhere, drugs are still used, especially heroin made from cheap opium from formerly communist Afghanistan.
Awkward ill-fitted men in scruffy facial hair and coke-bottle glasses driving white vans will sometimes follow younger characters around.
People are becoming more open to talking about things like sex and race, and depictions of those things are becoming less and less taboo. A new phenomenon of "Angry White Men", older white males opposed to these changes and exemplified by talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, has risen as a reaction to this.
Television is becoming more avant-garde and "weird TV" is taking over the channels. The renaissance age of western animation is occurring. "Trash TV" tabloid talk shows hosts like Jerry Springer, Geraldo Rivera and Sally Jessy Raphael are some of the most popular programs; in their shows they interview strange people, sometimes in an exploitive environment.
The western murder rate peaked around this year. Gang violence is a huge problem in urban areas, racial tensions are heating up, and physical bullying is still tolerated in schools.
Many young people are apathetic, cynical slackers who are self-indulgent and directionless in life; they like to wear to flannel.

Its a summer day in the year 1992 AD. Alt-rock and R&B dominate the airwaves, day-glo clothing is being replaced with muted colors, kids are playing Mortal Kombat at their local arcade, and the Simpsons is roaring strong in their fourth season.
