Oceania was established at an unknown point in time, after a revolution within the government that caused the merge of the USA with the British Empire. It currently compromises of the Americas, Atlantic Islands, British Isles, Australasia, and Southern Africa. Britain is known as 'Airstrip One', no other areas have set names.

Ingsoc (English Socialism, or "The Party") rules over these areas with its fake godlike figure 'Big Brother', a name used for a non-existent leader that watches over everything through surveillance in every aspect of people's lives. No set laws are in place and the Party can punish anyone at any time for any reason, but the main crime is that of 'Thoughtcrime', the act of having your own thoughts outside of the Party's influence. Often people are caught for acts like creativity, love, or something as simple as a personal journal. To think is to do, and there is no distinction between either.

Oceania has three levels of class: the Inner Party at the top, the Outer Party in the middle, and the biggest part of the population designated as Proles.

The Inner Party is hardly ever seen and essentially is the government and the upper class, directly following the orders of 'Big Brother' and living in high towers with organic goods like chocolate and fresh meat. These people also have access to vehicles and servants, as well as the ability to turn off their televisions for a few hours- and their expensive neighbourhoods are unable to be entered by anyone of a differing social class. It's likely that the Inner Party is fully subservient to Big Brother mentally, so this is their reward.

The Outer Party makes up the middle class and state administration- living in more run down houses, likened to that of a unkept mobile home. They're constantly watched and are unable to turn their telescreens off, only allowed cigarettes and gin outside of the state rations, and encouraged to rat each other out if they think they're committing Thoughtcrime. Outer Party members are meant to blindly serve Big Brother and are to abstain from showing any emotions outside of him, and sex is disallowed unless its with the intent of procreation. All members of the Outer Party are allowed education- and require it.

Proles make up the majority of the population and represent poverty. They don't go to school but aren't spied on because the Party sees them as stupid, their opinions don't matter. These people live in slums and have access to things like alcohol, gambling, party approved novels, and porn. Thought Police often patrol their slums for any Prole that seems intelligent- and in that case will take them away to be killed. A normal Prole speaks with an accent of some kind, due to the wealth displacement foreigners and hillbillies have been classified as Proles.

The main modes of surveillance lie in cameras, phones, and hidden microphones. Occasionally there will be Thought Police in disguise as normal people, as highly advanced plastic surgeries and facial prosthetics allow them to blend in with normal people to monitor the population where technology has not been implemented yet- allowing them to revert to their original appearance as well as change to another one in a matter of minutes.

Oceania constantly changes its history, disallowing for anything to stay concrete for too long so as to ease suspicion. One day they might be at war with Eurasia and friends with Eastasia, and the next they'll be friends with Eurasia and at war with Eastasia- the only constant is war itself. This constant switching of information and constant war disallows anyone to dwell too long so as to gain intelligence, as any and all information is fed through the Party and its many speeches and rallies throughout the months.

Regardless of who they're fighting at the end of the day, Big Brother and the Party are actually fighting for the Middle East region. It's not a lie.

Newspeak is the language used by the Party's members, which they publish a daily dictionary for. Big Brother's intent is to dumb down any and all wordage to the point nobody will be able to commit Thoughtcrime, for they will have no words to express their thoughts with and be unable to think outside of the Party. Most Newspeak words are just abbreviations.

Four ministries make up the functions of Oceania, enforcing the Party's slogan: "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength."

Ministry of Truth (Minitrue) "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.": In charge of the media, fine arts, educational books, and entertainment. They are the ones that change history every day for Big Brother so that way his word is absolute. Known Departments: Records Department (Recdep), Fiction Department (Ficdep), Tele-programmes Department (Teledep), Pornography Section (Pornosec).

Ministry of Peace (Minipax): In charge of the military and all its branches. They make sure to enforce the constant war- the thing keeping all of Oceania together outside of the propaganda.

Ministry of Love: Manages internal enforcement like the Thought Police. The lights are never turned off inside for some reason, and the building looks like a giant prison- because it is. Inside is where criminals are taken to be brainwashed back into love of Big Brother, killing the part of their mind that defied his will before they're released under a new name if successful and murdered if they're not. In Airstrip One province, the torture room is named Room 101.

Ministry of Plenty: In control of the economy, oversees rations, supplies and goods- as well as a lottery that never gives out money. They keep Oceania poor to keep the population complacent and publish fake statistics about how they're doing so well.

Holidays in Oceania have all been replaced with Big Brother's holidays. The dates are never set, more like scheduled and announced on the television or loudspeakers in the area.

One occurs daily in the Outer and Inner Party, the Two Minutes Hate- where everyone gathers around a television screen to scream at the image of a man named Emmanuel Goldstein and whoever is the enemy of the day, then be sedated by the national anthem of Oceania and the image of Big Brother on the screen.

Hate Week occurs in the summer, and is a weeklong festival centred around military parades and grand speeches as well as decorating the entire country in patriotic flags. People gather in monolithic areas to sing praises of Big Brother and the Party and to rally around whatever enemy is current, be that Eastasia or Eurasia. The Hate Song is also sung to celebrate during the parades.
