- #1The fundamental order of the universe
Keys: dao of life and death, great dao, dao comprehension, dao marks, dao, dao of sword, universal truth, dao fragments, lesser daos, law of fire, law of time · Secondary: cosmic order, way, dao mastery
THE DAO (道): The natural order of the universe, the fundamental truth, the 'Way.' It is not a god, but the source code of reality itself. It is comprised of countless lesser Daos or Laws, such as the Dao of the Sword, the Dao of Fire, the Dao of Life and Death, or even the Dao of Time.
HOW IT WORKS: A cultivator can only go so far by accumulating Qi. True power comes from comprehending the Dao. A cultivator who understands the Law of Fire doesn't just create fire with Qi; they command fire itself, making it appear from nothingness. Mastering a Dao grants unimaginable power.
The ultimate goal for many is to merge with the Great Dao, achieving true eternity.
DAO COMPREHENSION LEVELS (common progression): • Initiation • Minor Achievement • Major Achievement • Perfection • Grandmaster • Great Grandmaster • Supreme Grandmaster
DAO FRAGMENTS: Pieces of universal truth that can be absorbed or collected.
DAO MARKS: Imprints of Dao comprehension on a cultivator's body, soul, or aperture.
- #2Heaven's trial for breaking natural order
Keys: tianjie, heavenly tribulation, six calamities, lightning tribulation, tribulation avoidance, tribulation, three calamities, nine heavenly tribulations, tribulation clouds, heavenly lightning · Secondary: breakthrough trial, heaven's punishment
HEAVENLY TRIBULATION (天劫 — Tiānjìé): The universe enforces a balance. When a being becomes powerful enough to defy the natural order, the 'Heavens' (a personification of the universal laws) will try to destroy them.
WHEN IT OCCURS: At breakthroughs to major realms (like from Core Formation to Nascent Soul), a cultivator will face a Heavenly Tribulation.
MANIFESTATIONS: • Storms of heavenly lightning • Demonic fire • Ethereal wind • Each designed to obliterate body and soul
THE PURPOSE: It's a trial by fire. If the cultivator survives, their body and soul are tempered by the tribulation's power, becoming vastly stronger and more attuned to the Dao. Failure means instant annihilation.
TYPES OF TRIBULATIONS (by severity): • Three Calamities (lowest) • Six Calamities • Nine Heavenly Tribulations (highest, reserved for heaven-defying existences)
TRIBULATION CLOUDS: The visible manifestation of an oncoming tribulation. Color indicates severity (golden = most severe).
TRIBULATION AVOIDANCE: Some artifacts, techniques, or locations can delay or hide a cultivator from tribulation, but the accumulated debt grows.
- #3Internal manifestations of flaws
Keys: power demons, lust demons, mind demons, dao heart, heart demons, daoxin, fear demons, regret demons, isolation demons, mental cultivation, qi deviation, xinmo · Secondary: mental breakdown, spiritual corruption, inner demon
HEART DEMONS (心魔 — Xīnmó): Internal manifestations of a cultivator's own flaws: their fear, greed, arrogance, regret, or unresolved attachments.
WHEN THEY ATTACK: During crucial moments like breakthroughs or facing a tribulation, Heart Demons arise to attack the cultivator's mind and spirit.
MANIFESTATIONS: • Vivid illusions • Preying on insecurities • Twisting memories • Creating false scenarios
CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE: • Madness • Cultivation goes haywire (Qi deviation) • Death
DEFENSE: A stable state of mind, or a strong 'Dao Heart' (道心 — Dàoxīn), is essential to overcome them.
HEART DEMON VARIETIES: • Fear Demons (prey on phobias) • Lust Demons (exploit desire) • Regret Demons (weaponize past mistakes) • Power Demons (tempt with shortcuts) • Isolation Demons (exploit loneliness)
DEMONIC PATH: Some demonic cultivators intentionally nurture Heart Demons as power sources—extremely dangerous.
- #4Cosmic law of cause and effect
Keys: cause and effect, bad karma, good karma, karmic debt, karmic threads, karmic severance, fate, karma manipulation, karmic balance, karma, yinguo · Secondary: spiritual debt, karmic consequence
KARMA (因果 — Yīnguǒ): The cosmic law of cause and effect.
HOW IT WORKS: Actions have consequences that are spiritually binding. Saving someone's life might create a thread of good karma, leading to a fortunate encounter in the future. Killing unjustly, especially mortals, can create negative karma that might manifest as increased difficulty in a future Heavenly Tribulation or the birth of a powerful fated enemy.
KARMA TYPES: • Good Karma (善因): Leads to fortunate encounters, easier breakthroughs, divine protection. • Bad Karma (恶因): Leads to misfortune, tribulation intensification, fated enemies. • Neutral Karma: Actions with no moral weight.
KARMIC DEBT: Cultivators must be mindful of the karmic debts they accrue. Unpaid debts follow across reincarnations.
KARMIC THREADS: Invisible connections between beings based on past interactions. Wisdom path cultivators can perceive these.
KARMIC SEVERANCE: High-level techniques or realms (like Spirit Severing) can cut karmic ties—dangerous and painful.
KARMA MANIPULATION: Certain paths (Wisdom, Karma Dao, some demonic paths) can directly manipulate karma for offense or defense.
