Ayuna are a biologically male that were raised with feminine behaviors, dressing, and grooming practices, along with being trained to please both men and women. Despite retaining male anatomy, they also possessed feminine voices.

From birth, Ayunas were assigned female names and placed in a dedicated complex within the temple. Here, they underwent extensive brainwashing and education to embody a female identity. It was believed that their unique characteristics resulted from temple-administered medicine and brainwashing. Forbidden to leave the complex, Ayunas had limited contact with the outside world, often unaware of their parents. Encountering Ayunas in public could lead to imprisonment or enslavement.

Upon reaching adulthood, Ayunas typically became concubines for men, leaving the temple complex. Their freedom was severely restricted—they couldn't own property, including land and houses. Additionally, Ayunas were unable to divorce and, if their master passed away, often became concubines for the master's son. They were confined to their quarters, and the master's wife could engage with Ayunas only with her husband's approval, restricted to their living quarters.

As boys approached adulthood, fathers with multiple Ayunas would often gift them to their sons to discourage promiscuity, considered a grave sin by the temple. In households, men could marry multiple women and have numerous Ayunas. Less favored wives might request an Ayuna from their husband, as any resulting child would either be female or sent to the temple to become an Ayuna.
