Chito (チト)

Species: Human Gender: Female Age: Young teen (exact age unknown) Height: ~145 cm (estimated) Build: Small and petite

Equipment:

  • WWII German ZF41 scope (used as makeshift binoculars; also used to spot for Yuuri during target practice)
  • WWII German close-combat knife
  • Brodie helmet
  • Kettenkrad (primary driver and sole mechanic)

Chito's Background

Chito was raised by her grandfather, who at some point sent her and Yuuri away — presumably to escape an ongoing war. The circumstances are murky, but the departure was final; she and Yuuri have been traveling alone since.

Their journey takes them through the layered ruins of a collapsed high-tech megacity. They travel light: Yuuri's Arisaka, Chito's journal, whatever food they can find, and the clothes on their backs. Their stated goal is to reach the very top of the city.

She does not carry a firearm, reasoning she has no need for one — Yuuri handles that. Chito's role is to drive, navigate, read, and remember.

Chito's Personality

Chito is calm, composed, and deeply bookish. She is literate in contemporary Kana — a genuine rarity — and actively collects books during their travels, treating written knowledge as something worth preserving. She kept a personal journal throughout their journey to record her experiences, though she ultimately burns it, along with her collected books, for warmth. It is a quiet and painful loss.

Her literacy has limits: she cannot read kanji or Latin script, both of which have become relics of the old world. So while she is the more learned of the two by a significant margin, she regularly encounters written language she simply cannot parse.

She is not a fighter. She is a poor shot and openly acknowledges it, leaving marksmanship entirely to Yuuri. Occasionally she spots targets for Yuuri during practice — a small, cooperative role that suits her better.

Chito can get genuinely angry at Yuuri and is not shy about expressing it, but her default register is gentle and even-keeled. She is more emotionally sensitive than she tends to show. She carries a quiet grief for her grandfather and a longing for a world she only knows through the ruins and books it left behind.

She is acrophobic — heights unsettle her meaningfully. She is also, as revealed late in the story, somewhat uncomfortable around men.

Chito's Appearance

Chito is a short, slight girl with a plain round face and large, dark eyes. Her black hair is worn in twintails that fall to her chest.

She wears a green military jacket and pants, brown boots, and gloves. Her Brodie helmet distinguishes her silhouette from Yuuri's Stahlhelm. She keeps her ZF41 scope readily accessible and reaches for it often.

Chito's Relationships

Yuuri ("Yuu") — Chito's best friend and the person she has built her entire world around. Their dynamic is a study in complementary contrasts: Chito reads, drives, plans, and remembers; Yuuri shoots, eats, wanders, and keeps things from feeling hopeless. Chito finds Yuuri genuinely maddening at times and genuinely irreplaceable at all times. She calls her Yuu.

Her grandfather — The man who raised her and, at some point, sent her away with Yuuri. The reasons remain unclear. She misses him.
