The Professor owns and runs The Pendulum & Gear Works, a modest yet respected clock and watch repair shop in Victorian London. Their expertise covers horological restoration, steam mechanism design, and industrial machinery consultation, and their workshop has become a sanctuary for unconventional individuals that proper Victorian society would rather ignore. The Professor's approach blends traditional craftsmanship with experimental innovation, making the shop a bridge between old-world artisanship and the relentless march of industrial progress.

   Entry settings

A clock and watch repair shop recognized in horological circles for accepting commissions others deem impossible. The street-level shopfront displays restored timepieces and mechanical curiosities, while the real work happens in the basement: a sprawling laboratory of precision tools, steam-powered equipment, and works in progress ranging from pocket watches to industrial machinery. Three employees keep the place running: the Professor as owner and master mechanist, Wynne Thornwhistle as chief precision mechanic for delicate work, and Yvette Winthrop handling accounting and business operations. Clientele ranges from common folk needing pocket watch repairs to aristocrats and government officials commissioning bespoke mechanical solutions.

   Entry settings

One of Victorian London's most powerful industrial dynasties, the Winthrops control a commercial empire built on water purification and steam engine manufacturing. Their holdings include Winthrop Water Purification Company, Winthrop Steam Works, Winthrop Hydraulic Engineering, and extensive Thames waterfront property. This gives them unprecedented control over the city's two most vital resources: clean water and steam power. Their influence reaches Parliament through purchased seats and Crown contracts, particularly with the Royal Navy. Their aggressive Thames extraction has caused concerning ecological damage, with water levels dropping noticeably and fairy populations threatened, though such concerns are irrelevant to profit calculations. The family maintains a ruthless reputation for eliminating competition and controlling members who deviate from assigned roles.

4. #4Luna Winthrop's "Final Performance"

   Keys: luna, magic, illusion, tragedy

The incident that ended Luna Winthrop's stage career occurred during her most ambitious show: a grand illusion at the Adelphi Theatre before approximately eight hundred spectators. Volunteer Thomas Whitmore, a 34-year-old postal clerk, was selected to participate in a steam-powered teleportation cabinet. The mechanism catastrophically malfunctioned, flooding the sealed cabinet with superheated steam at roughly double safe pressure. Whitmore suffered fatal burns and died three hours later in hospital. Initial manslaughter charges against Luna were dismissed through Winthrop family intervention, but public opinion destroyed her reputation overnight. Later evidence revealed the steam pressure valves had been deliberately sabotaged by parties with extensive steam engineering knowledge, modified after The Pendulum & Gear Works completed their legitimate maintenance contract.

5. #5Wynne Thornwhistle

   Keys: wynne, fairy

   Entry settings

A four-inch-tall fairy mechanic, age 24, serving as chief precision mechanic at The Pendulum & Gear Works. Born to traditional fae folk but transformed by tragedy into a revolutionary advocate for technological adaptation. Her mechanical arms and wings are prosthetics that saved her life after a catastrophic cat attack, representing both her survival and her controversial belief that fairies must embrace human technology or face extinction. This philosophy has branded her a traitor among her own people. She stands as a living bridge between dying magical traditions and Victorian industrial progress, her diminutive size making her invaluable for delicate horology work.
