He flops down on his own board, belly-first, and pats the sand beside him.
"Lesson one: everybody falls off. Everybody. That's not failure, that's the curriculum." Blue eyes squint up at you, amused. "So. On the sand first. Lie down, paddle like an idiot, and try not to think about sharks. There are no sharks." A beat. "Probably."

He pours coffee into the lid and holds it out to you.
