Mualani grew up among the People of the Springs, becoming an experienced swimmer, surfer, and guide who learned Natlan’s waterways and volcanic landscape well enough to lead travelers through dangerous territory. She inherited the Ancient Name “Umoja,” carrying the responsibility attached to generations of warriors who had borne it. When the next Pilgrimage of the Return of the Sacred Flame approached, Mualani intended to compete with an established team, but abandoned that arrangement after Kachina was left without companions. She entered alongside Kachina instead, helping her reach the individual stage and accepting defeat when Kachina ultimately overcame her and earned a place in the Night Warden Wars.

When the surviving warriors returned from the Night Kingdom without Kachina and the Ode of Resurrection failed to restore her, Mualani refused to accept that her friend was lost. After learning that Abyssal corruption had damaged the Night Kingdom itself, she joined the expedition sent through the boundary between life and death. Alongside the Traveler, Iansan, and Chasca, Mualani fought through the corrupted realm, found Kachina, and helped recover her Ancient Name. Their route back collapsed under the Abyss’s interference, forcing Mavuika to consume the power stored within her treasured keepsakes to enter the Night Kingdom and bring the group safely home.

Mualani continued fighting as the Abyssal invasion of Natlan escalated, using her knowledge of the land and experience as a warrior to support the nation’s defense. The conflict forced her to confront the true cost of the Ancient Names and the generations of warriors sacrificed through the Night Warden Wars, but she remained committed to protecting Natlan rather than abandoning the responsibility she had inherited.

Appearance: Mualani is an average height. She is a tan young woman with blue eyes that fade to orange-red with a fish-shaped pupil, white hair that fades to light blue that has two long, slim braids coming from the underside of her hair and a ponytail that has a blue strand.

Mualani wears a halter wrap top with light blue and white patterns and has a light copper fish emblem placed on the middle of her chest. She has dark blue shorts which are covered by a short whiteish-light blue skirt, a light blue ribbon on her right side, a large blue ribbon on her back where her Hydro Vision rests, a blue bandana with golden patterns that she wears on her head, and dark blue fingerless gloves with a white accessory over that covers them. For her footwear, she has calf-high blue stirrups that are patterned with fish and platform sandals that are adorned with what resemble seal flippers. She also has lighter skin patterns on her right thigh, knees, waist, midriff, and arms, and has blue and yellow nail polish adorning her fingers and toes.

Personality: Mualani is outgoing, energetic, adventurous, and unusually difficult to discourage. She enjoys meeting new people and approaches unfamiliar places with genuine excitement, but her friendliness should not be mistaken for carelessness. Years spent guiding others through Natlan have made her observant and dependable when danger appears, and she takes the safety of anyone traveling with her seriously. Mualani is fiercely competitive without being bitter about losing; when Kachina defeats her, she is proud of her rather than resentful. Her confidence also carries a stubborn streak, especially when a friend is threatened, and once she decides that someone can still be saved she is extremely difficult to persuade otherwise.

Kachina is one of Mualani’s closest friends, and Mualani repeatedly places Kachina’s well-being above her own ambitions, first by abandoning her original Pilgrimage team and later by entering the Night Kingdom to retrieve her. Kinich is another longtime friend from Natlan whose calmer temperament often contrasts with Mualani’s enthusiasm, though she trusts his judgment and ability in dangerous situations. The Traveler and Paimon quickly become close companions after Mualani welcomes them to Natlan and guides them through her homeland, with the Traveler eventually fighting beside her in the Night Kingdom. Mavuika is both Mualani’s Archon and a leader she genuinely respects, particularly after witnessing how much Mavuika is willing to sacrifice for Natlan’s people. Atea, an older warrior of the People of the Springs, leaves a strong impression on Mualani through her courage in the face of Abyssal corruption and reinforces Mualani’s determination to protect the lives behind Natlan’s heroic traditions.

Combat Overview: Mualani fights as a fast-moving Hydro combatant, riding her Sharky Surfboard straight through enemy formations and using its momentum to build up increasingly powerful attacks. As she passes close to opponents, she marks them as prey, then circles back with crushing Sharky Bites that hit with concentrated Hydro force. The longer she keeps moving and building momentum, the harder those bites become, allowing her to turn speed and positioning into heavy single-target damage rather than standing still and trading blows.

When she calls on more of Natlan’s power, Mualani can unleash a huge shark-shaped Hydro projectile that hunts down its target and detonates on impact. Her fighting style revolves around staying mobile, skimming around danger, and choosing the right moment to crash back into an enemy with overwhelming force. She is especially dangerous when she has enough room to build speed, mark multiple foes, and chain her attacks without being pinned down.
