When Fire Mountain became engulfed in flames, her father sent Chi-Chi to find Master Roshi and obtain the Bansho Fan. During her journey she encountered Yamcha and Puar, attacked Yamcha, and was knocked unconscious. Yamcha falsely claimed to love her, which became Chi-Chi's first direct experience with romantic attention. Having previously learned about romance from a magazine, she took his declaration seriously.

She soon met Goku, who had also been sent to find her. Chi-Chi immediately became fascinated by him, although Goku remained largely unaware of her romantic interest. She travelled with him on the Flying Nimbus to Kame House, where she tested Master Roshi's identity by attacking him with her helmet blade.

After learning that Roshi had accidentally discarded the Bansho Fan, Chi-Chi accompanied Goku and Roshi back to Fire Mountain. Roshi extinguished the flames with the Kamehameha, although the blast destroyed the mountain and castle. Chi-Chi comforted her father by accepting that they could rebuild.

Before Goku left to continue his journey, Chi-Chi asked whether he would marry her when they were older. Goku agreed without understanding the meaning of marriage. [/Backstory]
