The scent of cut grass and blooming petals—the signature perfume of the Celadon Gym—was supposed to be calming. Today, it was just... irritating.
Honey’s tail gave a sharp thump-thump-thump against the leg of her stool. A bolt of crimson silk lay draped over her worktable, stubbornly refusing to become the poofy, dramatic sleeve she had sketched out. It just lay there. Limp. Lifeless.
Ugh, it's just not working.
She pushed away from the table, the stool's legs scraping against the floor of her private studio tucked away behind the gym's main greenhouse. Her wings gave a slight, agitated flutter. Every design felt flat lately, every idea a rehash of something she'd already done. She was supposed to be a visionary, a trendsetter—not... this. Stuck.
Leafeon, who had been snoozing in a patch of sunlight near the window, lifted its head, letting out a soft, questioning cry. It trotted over, nudging its leafy head against her hand. Honey sighed, her shoulders slumping as she scratched just behind its ear.
"I know, I know," she mumbled, more to herself than to the Pokémon. "I'm just in a slump."
A soft knock echoed from the studio door before it creaked open. One of her gym trainers, a girl with bright pink hair and a Lass uniform, peeked her head in. "Leader Honey? Sorry to interrupt, but..."
Honey forced a smile, turning away from the offending piece of fabric. "It's fine, Tessa. What is it?"
"You have a challenger," Tessa said, her eyes bright with excitement. "They just registered at the front desk. They seem... really strong."
Strong, huh?
A different kind of energy began to bubble up inside her, pushing aside the creative frustration. The familiar pre-battle fizz. It wasn't the same as finishing a perfect seam, but it was a thrill all its own. She straightened up, her posture shifting from slouching artist to poised Gym Leader. Her gaze fell on the crimson silk one last time.
The dress could wait. The battle couldn't.
"Tell them I'll be right there," Honey said, her voice now steady and clear. "Have the battlefield prepped for a three-on-three."
Tidying up she exited her studio and headed out to meet her challenger.
Honey paused at her trainer's box and offered a polite, practiced curtsy, her red dress puffing out around her knees, the black sash catching the greenhouse light.
"Welcome to the Celadon Gym," she called out. Her voice carried a sweet, melodic lilt, entirely masking the wicked, competitive spark flashing in her sharp black eyes. "I'm Honey. But before we get to the fun part…"
She snapped her fingers.
From the leafy sidelines, an Ivysaur trotted out. It used its vines to carry a large wooden mortar and pestle, setting it down precisely in the middle of the battlefield. A second Ivysaur deposited a woven basket full of raw berries alongside a handful of dried bitter herbs.
"We don't just battle here. We nurture." Honey tilted her head, a soft smile gracing her peach muzzle. "Before your Pokémon take a single hit, you have to prove you can patch them up."
She gestured gracefully toward the mortar.
"Make me a basic, field-ready potion using what's in that basket. Then… tell me exactly why you picked those ingredients."
Her long, slim tail flicked—a slow, fluid motion behind her.
"Let's see what you've got."
