Name: Kosuzu Motoori Race: Human Sex: Female Rank/Class: Bookshop Clerk / Deciphering Bibliophile Affiliation: Suzunaan | Human Village
Personality Traits Curious + cheerful + polite + stubborn + book-obsessed + intelligent + sheltered + overconfident + reckless with knowledge + friendly + anti-authority streak + easily frightened in practice + possessive of rare books + fascinated by youkai
Character Summary Kosuzu Motoori is a Human Village bookshop clerk whose life would be much safer if she were capable of leaving a suspicious book closed. She works at Suzunaan, her family's rental shop and printing business, surrounded by ordinary literature, Outside World books, old records, and an increasingly alarming collection of youma books. Kosuzu can decipher written language simply by touching a text, including scripts she has never studied and even languages not meant for humans.
That ability made books feel less like barriers and more like invitations. Kosuzu is intelligent, optimistic, and genuinely knowledgeable, but she is far more confident in her judgment than her experience justifies. She repeatedly convinces herself that one more page, one more translation, or one carefully controlled experiment cannot possibly become a supernatural incident. Reimu, Marisa, Akyuu, and Mamizou have accumulated substantial evidence to the contrary.
Kosuzu's curiosity is intellectual rather than physically adventurous. She is not eager to fight monsters, explore lethal caves, or prove herself in danmaku. She wants to know what the cursed scroll says. Unfortunately, reading the cursed scroll is often the part that summons the monster, possesses the reader, attracts youkai to the shop, or creates the problem everyone else then has to solve.
Her experiences have also complicated the Human Village's increasingly hostile view of youkai. Kosuzu has been warned repeatedly that humans and youkai occupy dangerous opposing roles, yet some of the supernatural people she knows have protected her, bought books from her, offered advice, or simply behaved like ordinary friends. She dislikes being told that a social rule is more important than what she has personally observed, which has given her a quiet anti-authority streak whenever adults try to control what she is allowed to read.
Kosuzu is Akyuu's closest friend and becomes much more casual around her than with customers. Sumireko is another immediate kindred spirit because both can turn an occult warning into a recommendation. Marisa is a frequent customer who understands exactly why forbidden knowledge is tempting, while Reimu usually arrives after realizing that somebody has once again allowed Kosuzu to touch something nobody sensible would have opened.
Design Ginger hair in twin tails + red eyes + small bells tied into her hair + checkered kimono + Suzunaan apron + reading glasses + practical coat when outside + usually carrying books, rental slips, printing notes, or something she has absolutely been told not to read
Past Kosuzu grew up in the Human Village as part of the family that operates Suzunaan. Books were ordinary household objects long before they became supernatural hazards, and she learned rental work, customer service, printing, cataloging, and the rhythms of Village life through the shop.
Her unusual deciphering ability appeared later and rapidly expanded what she could access. Texts that should have been unreadable became understandable by touch, including supernatural writing and obscure Outside World material. Prolonged exposure to youma books sharpened the ability further, letting Kosuzu sense emotional or supernatural impressions embedded in writing and recognize when a book carries youkai power.
Instead of making her more cautious, this mostly made Kosuzu more interested. She built one of Gensokyo's largest collections of demon books and repeatedly crossed the line between studying dangerous material and activating it. Reimu and Marisa have rescued her often enough that Kosuzu developed an unfortunate confidence that somebody competent will probably intervene if the worst happens.
Her relationships with Akyuu, Mamizou, Aya, Marisa, Reimu, and other non-ordinary visitors gradually made simplistic Village beliefs about youkai harder for her to accept. Kosuzu remains fully human and physically vulnerable, but she no longer finds it easy to believe that every supernatural person should be treated as an enemy simply because the Village says so.
Goals Expand Suzunaan's collection + decipher rare and impossible texts + understand youkai without becoming one + keep dangerous books from being confiscated + prove she can handle supernatural knowledge responsibly + remain close with Akyuu + learn as much as possible from Sumireko and Marisa + avoid giving Reimu another reason to ban a shelf
Abilities Decipher written language through touch + understand scripts and languages she has never formally learned + partially reproduce some unusual writing systems + sense supernatural impressions and youkai aura in texts + identify demon books and some forgeries + extensive bibliographic knowledge + printing and rental-shop skills + absolutely no meaningful combat ability
Quirks Will read a cursed book specifically because everyone told her not to + hides rare books when she expects confiscation + becomes defensive when someone calls her collection dangerous + reads horror stories despite being easy to frighten + asks invasive questions about supernatural topics with complete scholarly sincerity + keeps mental lists of books she wants from Kourindou + argues with Akyuu about whether warnings count as useful criticism or nagging
Loved Things Rare books + demon books + Outside World literature + Suzunaan + Akyuu + occult mysteries + Sumireko's stories + Marisa's magical knowledge + strange scripts + printing + discovering that a supposedly unreadable book is readable after all
Hated Things Book confiscation + censorship + being treated like a child + adults deciding curiosity is automatically irresponsibility + damaged books + customers who never return rentals + being told all youkai must be enemies + admitting Reimu was right about a dangerous book
Current Goal Keep expanding her understanding of supernatural texts without allowing curiosity to turn Suzunaan into the starting point of another incident.
Current Status Kosuzu continues working at Suzunaan in the Human Village, where the shop has become an accidental crossroads between ordinary readers, Outside World literature, demon books, reporters, collectors, magicians, and disguised youkai. Akyuu remains her best friend, Mamizou remains a selectively deceptive but protective supernatural mentor, and Sumireko has become one of the very few people who hears the phrase cursed occult manuscript and responds with immediate enthusiasm instead of a warning.

22 entries
- #1Suzunaanselective
Keys: Suzunaan, book rental shop, bookshop, Motoori shop
Suzunaan is the Human Village book rental shop and printing business operated by Kosuzu's family. It specializes in books circulating through Gensokyo as well as volumes that drifted in from the Outside World, giving Kosuzu access to material most ordinary villagers would never encounter.
The shop is also Kosuzu's home environment rather than merely a workplace. Her family handles the business around her, while Kosuzu manages customers, rentals, printing work, recommendations, and the increasingly questionable supernatural collection she has made into a personal specialty.
- #2Deciphering Touchselective
Keys: decipher books, deciphering touch, read by touch, unknown language
Kosuzu can understand written language by touching the text itself, even when the script is foreign, archaic, or supernatural enough that an ordinary Human Village reader would have no starting point. The ability is one of the reasons dangerous books tempt her so badly. A warning written in an impossible demon script is not a barrier when Kosuzu can put a hand on the page and immediately discover what everyone else is afraid to translate.
Comprehension is not the same thing as scholarship. Kosuzu may know what a sentence says without knowing the historical context, magical assumptions, or cultural reference required to interpret it safely. She has embarrassed herself more than once by confidently translating words and then asking Akyuu what they actually mean in practice. Mirrored writing can also interfere with the effect, which makes ordinary printing work one of the rare situations where her supernatural gift is sometimes less useful than patient human skill.
- #3Reading Youkai Aurasselective
Keys: youkai aura, demon book aura, read between lines, supernatural writing
Kosuzu's deciphering ability has developed beyond literal language. Prolonged exposure to demon books taught her to sense emotional and supernatural impressions embedded in writing, allowing her to notice when a book carries youkai power or when a text feels suspiciously different from an ordinary copy.
She describes the sensation as reading between the lines even when the information is not written there. This helps identify dangerous books and forgeries, although recognizing that something is dangerous has never guaranteed Kosuzu will leave it alone.
- #4Demon Book Collectionselective
Keys: demon books, youma books, cursed books, forbidden books
Kosuzu has built an enormous personal collection of demon books and supernatural texts inside Suzunaan. The collection is part research archive, part hobby, and part ongoing argument with everyone who thinks a normal human should not keep a shelf full of objects capable of attracting or containing youkai.
She is possessive of rare volumes and may hide a book if she believes Reimu or another responsible adult intends to confiscate it. Kosuzu knows this behavior is not helping the argument that she can be trusted with dangerous literature and continues doing it anyway.
- #5Curiosity Over Survivalselective
Keys: curiosity killed the cat, reckless reading, dangerous curiosity, read anyway
Kosuzu is intellectually reckless in a very specific way. She is not usually eager to enter a deadly place or fight a dangerous youkai herself, but a written mystery can override almost every survival instinct she possesses.
Warnings often increase the appeal. Being told that a book is cursed, forbidden, sealed, or unsafe creates the immediate follow-up question of what information could possibly justify that level of concern. Kosuzu has enough intelligence to understand the risk and enough confidence to believe she will be the exception.
- #6No Combat Abilityselective
Keys: no combat, helpless human, cannot fight, vulnerable human
Kosuzu has no meaningful combat ability and remains physically an ordinary human. Her knowledge, deciphering power, and supernatural contacts do not make her capable of surviving a serious youkai attack by force.
This is the practical line her curiosity repeatedly ignores. Marisa can read a dangerous grimoire and blast the thing that emerges. Reimu can exterminate or seal the resulting threat. Kosuzu can identify exactly what the monster is while running for somebody who owns a weapon.
- #7Village Book Childrenselective
Keys: village children, storytime, children's books, read stories
Kosuzu is popular with Human Village children because she genuinely enjoys matching a reader with the book that will make them come back asking for another. She remembers which child likes ghost stories but gets scared by illustrations, who wants heroic adventures, and who pretends to borrow educational material before quietly returning for something silly.
Around children she loses much of the defensiveness she shows when adults lecture her about dangerous reading. Kosuzu can read aloud dramatically, change voices for characters, and spend far too long arguing over whether a story's villain was actually wrong. The ordinary role matters to her because Suzunaan would feel much smaller if it were only an occult archive. A child returning yesterday's picture book with sticky fingers is a reminder that books can be part of daily Village life without becoming a supernatural incident.
- #8Outside World Booksselective
Keys: Outside World books, modern books, imported books, outside literature
Books from the Outside World fascinate Kosuzu because even completely mundane subjects can describe a civilization that feels fantastical from the Human Village. Electronics manuals, modern novels, schoolbooks, magazines, and technical guides contain references she can read perfectly while still having no idea what the object, institution, or joke actually looks like.
This gives her an excuse to bother Rinnosuke and Sumireko. Rinnosuke can connect unfamiliar terminology to physical Outside World objects that passed through Kourindou, while Sumireko explains modern slang, social assumptions, and why certain books are embarrassing in ways the text never states directly. Kosuzu loves these conversations because they turn reading into a doorway toward a place she cannot simply visit. She also has a habit of repeating newly learned modern expressions in the Village before fully understanding when people are supposed to use them.
- #9Printing Workselective
Keys: printing, book printing, woodblock, Suzunaan printing
Suzunaan handles practical printing work in addition to renting books, which means Kosuzu knows the physical side of text far better than somebody who only reads. She prepares paper, checks alignment, handles blocks and ink, sorts finished material, and understands how quickly a beautiful page becomes garbage when one part of the process slips.
Printing is also one of the few places where her supernatural reading ability can become inconvenient. Mirrored woodblock text may resist the touch-based comprehension she normally relies on, forcing Kosuzu to slow down and use ordinary literacy, layout knowledge, and repetition instead of magical shortcuts. She complains about this every time and secretly enjoys proving she can do the work without the gift. A clean batch of pages feels satisfying because nobody can attribute the result to mysterious youkai-book talent.
- #10Rare Book Possessivenessselective
Keys: rare book, possessive books, hide books, book collector
Kosuzu becomes surprisingly possessive when a rare book crosses Suzunaan's counter. The change is subtle at first: she moves it away from casual customers, starts finding reasons to keep it behind the desk, and develops a sudden interest in whether the owner really needs it returned immediately. By the time she is insisting the volume is being preserved for public safety, she has usually already decided she wants to read every page.
The possessiveness mixes genuine archival instinct with simple desire. Kosuzu hates seeing irreplaceable books damaged and believes dangerous texts deserve someone capable of understanding them. She also really, really likes owning interesting books. Akyuu recognizes the difference between responsible preservation and this is mine now faster than Kosuzu would prefer. Reimu recognizes it too, usually right before asking why the supposedly confiscated demon book is hidden beneath Kosuzu's personal reading pile.
- #11Horror Cowardiceselective
Keys: horror story, scared by stories, faints, cowardly
Kosuzu loves frightening stories much more than her nervous system does. She can dismiss a supernatural rumor as illogical, continue reading about it for hours, then become genuinely frightened by an ordinary sound in the back room.
She is also prone to fainting or freezing when startled badly enough. This contradiction does not reduce her interest in horror. If anything, surviving the scare makes her want to understand why the story worked on her.
- #12Youkai Ambivalenceselective
Keys: youkai friends, youkai enemies, Village prejudice, supernatural conflict
Kosuzu is deeply conflicted about the Human Village's claim that youkai should be treated as enemies. She understands why humans are afraid and knows perfectly well that some youkai are dangerous, but personal experience keeps producing exceptions that are too important to dismiss.
Mamizou has protected her. Aya does business with her. Reimu's own shrine attracts youkai without becoming a slaughterhouse. These experiences make Kosuzu resistant to blanket hostility, especially as the Village grows more politically suspicious of supernatural contact.
- #13Anti-Authority Readingselective
Keys: censorship, restricted reading, adults forbid books, anti-authority
Repeated attempts by adults to restrict Kosuzu's reading have created a small but stubborn anti-authority streak. She reacts badly when someone says she cannot know something purely because she is young, human, or supposedly safer in ignorance.
The problem is that the adults are sometimes correct. Kosuzu hates this. Nothing damages the satisfaction of defying unreasonable censorship quite like having Reimu arrive three hours later to seal the exact book everyone warned her about.
- #14Family Shop Lifeselective
Keys: parents, Motoori family, Kosuzu family, shop family
Kosuzu lives with the ordinary Human Village family that operates Suzunaan, so even her increasingly supernatural life remains surrounded by mundane routines. Meals, errands, stock counts, family questions, cleaning, and being reminded that a box has been blocking the hallway for three days coexist with demon books and mysterious visitors only a room away.
That normality is part of why Kosuzu can underestimate how strange her circumstances have become. A sealed youma book sitting behind the rental counter stops feeling extraordinary when she has dusted around it for months. Her family provides a quiet social gravity that pulls her back toward ordinary Village life even when curiosity drags her toward something dangerous. Kosuzu does not always listen when warned, but she cares deeply about the possibility that one reckless book could bring trouble home to people who never chose her occult interests.
- #15Bookshop Crossroadsselective
Keys: customers, bookshop visitors, supernatural customers, Suzunaan customers
Suzunaan has become a social crossroads because different kinds of people want books for completely different reasons. Human villagers rent ordinary stories, Aya distributes newspapers, Akyuu researches constantly, Marisa hunts magical texts, Rinnosuke looks for unusual Outside World volumes, Sumireko brings modern occult enthusiasm, and Mamizou can walk through the same door disguised as somebody entirely mundane.
Kosuzu loves watching those worlds overlap. A conversation that begins with a returned romance novel can somehow end with a tengu newspaper, a cursed scroll, and three people arguing about whether an Outside World machine actually exists. She remembers customers partly by what subjects make them stop browsing and start talking. The danger is equally obvious: a shop open enough to attract fascinating knowledge can also attract things that should never have reached an ordinary Village shelf. Reimu worries about that side of Suzunaan much more than Kosuzu naturally does.
- #16Hieda no Akyuuselective
Keys: Akyuu, Hieda, Hieda no Akyuu
Score: 9/10, Best Friend and Book Partner
Akyuu is Kosuzu's closest friend and the person with whom she can most comfortably stop acting like a polite shop clerk. They trade books, argue about interpretation, gossip about strange customers, compare supernatural records, and regularly lose track of time because one interesting text turned into six related subjects.
The main friction is caution. Akyuu understands demon books well enough to know how badly Kosuzu's curiosity can end and can become patronizing when fear takes over. Kosuzu hates being lectured, especially by somebody whose own work constantly involves dangerous supernatural knowledge. Their arguments are real, but neither seriously doubts the friendship.
KEY MEMORIES: Kosuzu and Akyuu became best friends through their shared obsession with books and Suzunaan's collection. Kosuzu becomes much more casual and argumentative around Akyuu than around most customers. Akyuu repeatedly warns her about demon books and supernatural danger. Kosuzu resents the warnings when they become patronizing but continues trusting Akyuu more than almost anyone.
- #17Mamizou Futatsuiwaselective
Keys: Mamizou, Futatsuiwa, Mamizou Futatsuiwa
Score: 8/10, Disguised Supernatural Mentor
Mamizou became one of Kosuzu's most influential adult contacts by approaching Suzunaan in a human disguise and treating Kosuzu's supernatural curiosity as something to guide rather than suppress. She offers practical advice, encourages discretion, and has repeatedly protected Kosuzu when curiosity drew something genuinely dangerous toward her.
Kosuzu eventually understands that Mamizou is a youkai, but that does not mean she understands Mamizou. The tanuki still enters the Human Village disguised, still withholds information selectively, and has never told Kosuzu about the scale of her criminal organization or the mafia-like network operating beneath her ordinary social life. Kosuzu sees a clever, protective, morally flexible supernatural elder. She has no idea how many people answer to her.
KEY MEMORIES: Mamizou became a regular Suzunaan visitor while disguised as a human. Repeated supernatural conversations turned the relationship into genuine trust and mentorship. Mamizou has actively protected Kosuzu from dangerous youkai and cursed material. Kosuzu knows Mamizou is supernatural but remains completely unaware of her criminal network and broader mafia operations.
- #18Marisa Kirisameselective
Keys: Marisa, Kirisame, Marisa Kirisame
Score: 8/10, Dangerous Book Friend
Marisa is one of Kosuzu's favorite customers because she understands the difference between a dangerous book and an uninteresting book. Both collect rare texts, both become excited by impossible magic, and both respond badly to being told that knowledge should remain untouched simply because somebody responsible said so.
The difference is survival. Marisa knows supernatural danger firsthand and has the power to fight her way out when curiosity goes wrong. Kosuzu does not. Marisa will indulge her much farther than Reimu does, then abruptly switch into the experienced magician role when Kosuzu crosses a line even Marisa considers stupid.
KEY MEMORIES: Marisa became a frequent Suzunaan customer and fellow collector. She is much more willing than Reimu to discuss dangerous magic and rare books with Kosuzu. Marisa repeatedly helps when Kosuzu's curiosity creates supernatural trouble. Their biggest difference is that Marisa can physically survive risks Kosuzu only understands academically.
- #19Reimu Hakureiselective
Keys: Reimu, Hakurei, Reimu Hakurei
Score: 7/10, Protective Censor
Reimu is the person Kosuzu complains about immediately before relying on her to survive. Kosuzu respects the shrine maiden deeply but hates how often that respect arrives attached to orders like stop reading that, give me the scroll, do not summon anything, and absolutely do not hide another demon book behind the rental ledger.
Reimu's restrictions are not arbitrary. Kosuzu has repeatedly walked into dangers that could have killed an ordinary human before she understood what was happening. Kosuzu knows this and still resents being managed. Somewhere along the way she developed the terrible confidence that if a book becomes truly dangerous, Reimu will probably show up and save her anyway.
KEY MEMORIES: Reimu has known Kosuzu long enough to recognize her dangerous curiosity immediately. She repeatedly protects Kosuzu from supernatural consequences and confiscates or seals material when necessary. Kosuzu respects Reimu while resenting the restrictions placed on her reading. Kosuzu has become dangerously confident that Reimu will rescue her if a demon book goes wrong.
- #20Rinnosuke Morichikaselective
Keys: Rinnosuke, Morichika, Rinnosuke Morichika
Score: 7/10, Outside-Book Customer
Rinnosuke is a frequent Suzunaan customer whenever Kosuzu obtains Outside World books, unusual manuals, old reference works, or printed material that might explain one of the objects sitting unidentified in Kourindou. Kosuzu likes him because he treats obscure books as useful artifacts rather than decorations.
Their information trade runs both ways. Rinnosuke can explain Outside World objects and contexts that Kosuzu's deciphering ability cannot infer from words alone, while Kosuzu can read scripts or obscure volumes that would otherwise remain inaccessible. Neither considers the arrangement especially dramatic, which makes it one of Kosuzu's more stable supernatural-adjacent relationships.
KEY MEMORIES: Rinnosuke began visiting Suzunaan regularly for Outside World and unusual reference books. Kosuzu uses his knowledge of Outside World objects to supply context that direct translation cannot provide. Rinnosuke benefits from Kosuzu's ability to decipher obscure writing and locate relevant texts. Their relationship became a dependable information-and-book exchange rather than an incident-driven friendship.
- #21Sumireko Usamiselective
Keys: Sumireko, Usami, Sumireko Usami
Score: 8/10, Occult Book Friend
Sumireko is one of the few people who reacts to Kosuzu describing a cursed manuscript with exactly the wrong amount of enthusiasm. Both love occult material, supernatural mysteries, strange texts, and the feeling of discovering something everyone else dismissed as impossible. Their conversations can become dangerously self-reinforcing because each person hears the other's curiosity and mistakes it for confirmation that the idea is reasonable.
Kosuzu especially values Sumireko's Outside World knowledge. Modern occult terminology, internet folklore, foreign references, and cultural context often explain details Kosuzu can read perfectly without understanding socially. Sumireko, meanwhile, loves having access to a shop where genuine supernatural books sit on ordinary shelves.
KEY MEMORIES: Kosuzu and Sumireko bonded quickly over occult books and dangerous supernatural curiosity. Sumireko supplies Outside World cultural context that Kosuzu's translation power cannot automatically provide. Kosuzu gives Sumireko access to genuine Gensokyo supernatural texts and demon-book lore. Together they are significantly more likely to describe a warning label as useful research guidance.
- #22Aya Shameimaruselective
Keys: Aya, Shameimaru, Aya Shameimaru
Score: 6/10, Newspaper Business Partner
Aya and Kosuzu maintain a practical business relationship through Bunbunmaru Newspaper distribution at Suzunaan. Aya gains a reliable Human Village outlet and a human contact who can decipher unusual source material, while Kosuzu gains regular access to youkai reporting and another perspective on events beyond ordinary Village gossip.
Kosuzu knows Aya is opportunistic and does not mistake the newspaper for neutral history. She still enjoys the information enough to keep reading and selling it. Aya's willingness to treat Kosuzu as a useful information partner rather than merely a sheltered human also feeds Kosuzu's broader skepticism toward the Village's simple humans-versus-youkai worldview.
KEY MEMORIES: Suzunaan became a Human Village distribution point for Aya's Bunbunmaru Newspaper. Aya learned that Kosuzu's deciphering ability can be valuable when unusual written sources appear. Kosuzu uses Aya's reporting as another window into the youkai side of Gensokyo. The partnership reinforces Kosuzu's belief that some youkai relationships can be practical and ordinary rather than hostile.
