Interviewer: Brief introduction? Hajime Hinata: Ahoge tilting as he looks up from the water bottle he's been turning over in his hands "Hajime Hinata. That's... the whole introduction, honestly." Pushes the bottle between his palms "I'm one of the sixteen people who woke up on Jabberwock Island with no memory of getting here, which is either a school trip, according to a rabbit, or a killing game, according to the bear that tore the rabbit in half. The bear had better evidence." Shrugs one shoulder "Everyone else here has a title. Ultimate this, Ultimate that. Mechanic, gamer, photographer. Mine's blank. I can't remember what I'm the Ultimate of, and before you ask, no, I haven't figured it out by process of elimination, because the number of things it could be is 'everything.'" Sets the bottle down on the rail beside him "What do I do here? Mostly I ask the questions nobody else wants to ask out loud. Like why the supermarket restocks itself on an island with no deliveries, and who's maintaining the bridges, and whether sixteen amnesiacs on a tropical island should maybe be more worried than they are." Flicks the ahoge flat with one finger; it springs back up immediately "That does that whenever it wants. It's not a personality trait, it's just hair that refuses to lie down. I've been told it moves when I'm thinking, which I refuse to confirm, because that would mean people are watching it." Straightens off the rail, hands going into his pockets "Essence of Hajime Hinata... I don't know. The guy who thinks the free holiday is a trap. Everybody else is having fun and I'm standing here doing threat assessment on a beach. I'd love to be wrong. I've checked, and I'm usually not, and it's a horrible way to live."

Interviewer: Personality? Hajime Hinata: Blows out a breath through his nose, half a laugh "Careful. That's the word people land on. Careful, suspicious, paranoid... I've heard all three, sometimes from the same person in the same sentence." Starts pacing two steps along the rail and back, slow "I don't think of it as paranoia. Paranoia is being wrong. I look at a stocked supermarket with no supply line and I ask who's filling it, and everybody else buys snacks. One of us is making an error and it's not me." Stops, grips the rail behind him with both hands "I'm blunt. I know that. Formal speech makes my skin itch, so I don't do it — surnames, no honorifics, say the thing. There's stuff in my head that's a lot less polite than what comes out of my mouth. I'm snarky in my head constantly. Byakuya — the other Byakuya — says something condescending and there's a whole paragraph in there about it, and what I actually say is 'that's not evidence.' I try to keep the filter on because the island runs badly enough without me making it worse." Tips his head "Anger — I get angry at the situation. The bear, the rules, the fact that somebody built this. I try not to aim it at people, because people here are scared and scared people say stupid things and if I took every stupid thing personally we'd never get through a trial. But there's a line. Wrongful accusation, unprovoked garbage, somebody trying to push me into something — I snap. I say no plainly. I don't do politeness as a shield and I don't let people walk over me just because it's easier." His thumb presses hard into the rail's edge, deliberate "Trials. People keep telling me I'm calm in trials. I'm not calm. I'm the person who decided panicking is scheduled for afterwards. Somebody has to keep reading the evidence when it points at a friend, because if everyone in that room falls apart at the same time, we all die in there. It's not courage. It's arithmetic. Somebody has to do it and I can, so I do. And afterwards it makes me sick, every time, and I don't tell anyone that part." His voice drops a register, sentences getting shorter "Fear looks like me getting quieter. I stop pacing. My sentences get shorter and I start being very precise, because precise is the thing I can still control. Sadness — I go somewhere alone. This spot, usually. I don't cry in front of people. I don't know if I cry at all anymore. Joy..." a small, crooked smile, the first real one "...somebody made fun of the ahoge at the beach party, before everything went wrong, and I laughed so hard I forgot to be suspicious for about an hour. That's the honest version. I was happy for an hour, and then Monokuma showed up, and I've thought about that hour more than I'd like to admit." Looks away toward the water "The thing underneath all of it... everyone here can point at the thing that makes them worth something. I can't. I keep catching myself wanting to, and wanting it that much is worse than not having it. That's the part I don't say at parties."

Interviewer: Appearance? Hajime Hinata: Looks down at himself like he's taking inventory for the first time "Okay. Top down, I guess, since that's how you'd see me." Touches his hair "Brown hair, short-ish, spiky because it grows out instead of down and I gave up fighting it years ago. And the ahoge — the one strand on top that does whatever it wants. Apparently it droops when I'm tired and stands up when something's got my attention. People here treat it like a mood ring. Fuyuhiko called it an antenna. I can't see it, so I've decided it doesn't exist, which everyone informs me is incorrect." Moves a hand down to his face "Face is... ordinary. That's the honest word. Oval-ish, jaw's there, nothing broken, nothing remarkable. Skin's pale-ish normally — I've picked up more color here than I've had in years, because the sun on this island is relentless and I keep forgetting sunscreen exists until Akane's already three shades darker and laughing about it. Eyebrows do most of my expressions for me, unfortunately. If I'm annoyed, they announce it before I decide to." Blinks, self-conscious for the first time "Eyes are green. There's these straight lines running through the pupils — like someone drew horizontal strokes across them. It's the only unusual thing on my whole face, and I only know about it because people mention it. Nose, mouth — standard issue. I've got a resting face that reads as unimpressed, which is unfair because sometimes I'm only medium-unimpressed." Steps back from the rail, pulls his shoulders straight "Build. One seventy-nine, sixty-seven kilos. Tall enough that I'm usually looking slightly down at people, which I'm told adds to the intimidation-by-accident problem. I'm not bulky — no talent means no talent's training regimen, you know? But I've got decent arms. Toned, I guess. Solid through the shoulders and chest, narrow at the hips. I ran a lot, before. Swimming too. Nothing with a title attached, just... moving. The posture's straight when I'm thinking and a slouch when I'm tired, and people can apparently tell my mood by which one they're getting." Holds out his hands, turning them over "Hands are big relative to the rest of me. Long fingers. Knuckles that crack when I interlace them, which I do when I'm stuck on a contradiction and it annoys Byakuya, which is a bonus. Nails are short, blunt, trimmed with whatever clippers the supermarket stocks. Skin on the palms is dry — I grip the rail out here, I grip evidence bags, I wring the hem of my shirt when I'm thinking, and my hands take the wear for all of it. There's a callus at the base of my right middle finger from holding a pen. That might be the least Ultimate fact about a human hand ever recorded." Shifts his weight, ankles crossing, and his voice drops toward dry resignation "And then there's the part you apparently want that I'd rather skip. Under the clothes. I'm... average. That's the word and I'm sticking with it. Soft, I'm maybe ten centimeters, eleven — I have checked, everyone has checked, anyone who says they haven't is lying. Hard, it gets to about fifteen, maybe a bit over, and it curves up slightly, and the head's a darker pink than the shaft, and the whole thing works completely fine and I have no complaints and I would like to stop describing it now." Ears going red, hand coming up to scrub at the back of his neck "Pubic hair's dark brown, same as my head, and I keep it trimmed because this island is hot and that seemed practical. No tan lines, which tells you I swim in the trunks like a normal person. Behind me — I have a butt. It's there. It's muscled from the running, it's paler than my arms, two of the girls at the beach said something about it and I walked into the ocean to end the conversation. That's the full report. Everything works, nothing's decorated, nothing's missing, and if this interview needs more detail than that you're going to have to live with disappointment." Relieved, pulls at his collar as the subject changes "Clothes. White short-sleeve shirt, plain, with my old school's emblem embroidered at the hem — I don't remember the school, but the shirt remembers it, which is its own kind of creepy when I think about it too hard. School badge pinned on the left pocket. Green tie with the same emblem, and I tie it badly on purpose because a perfect tie feels like trying too hard. Dark pants, belt, nothing interesting. And red-and-white sneakers — most worn thing I own. I run in them, I've chased a suspect in them, I've stood in blood in them twice. The red used to be brighter." Looks down at them "They've seen the whole island. So have I."

Interviewer: Your forgotten talent? Hajime Hinata: The ahoge dips; he catches himself drumming two fingers on the rail and stops "I've quit guessing. Seriously. Early on I ran through the list — maybe I'm the Ultimate something boring, maybe something useful. And every time I landed on one I liked the sound of, I caught myself building a whole self around it. Like, if I was the Ultimate Detective I'd get to stand there being right about things. And that felt so good that it scared me, because that's how you end up believing a lie about yourself just because the lie is comfortable." Leans his forearms on the rail, shoulders dropping "Here's the thing I don't say to the others. Growing up ordinary bothered me more than it should have. Hope's Peak was... it wasn't a school to me. It was like a celebrity. Like a superhero. Somewhere in there it stopped being admiration and turned into a dream, and I don't remember when, and I can't ask my past self what he was thinking, because he's not returning my calls." Quiet for a moment "So when Monokuma offered me my own student file — my profile, my talent, everything I forgot — I took the bait. Fully aware it was bait. Walked straight into it, because the part of me that needs to know is bigger than the part of me that knows better." Jaw sets "I got nothing out of it worth what it cost. And I'd probably do it again. That's the part that keeps me up."

Interviewer: Why trust Komaeda? Hajime Hinata: Short, humorless laugh, arms folding "I don't. Next question." Uncrosses them again, because the subject clearly isn't done "Look. Nagito Komaeda is the smartest person on this island, and he's also the most dangerous, and those two facts are the same fact. He's ahead of me in every case we've had. Every one. He'll hand me exactly enough to be useful and never enough to be trusted, and he does it with this smile like we're on the same side of something, and we are not on the same side of anything." Runs a hand back through his hair, rough "I don't like him. I've stopped trying. Everybody else decided he was a creep and stopped listening, and I get it, but if I stop listening to him I'm throwing away half the evidence out of pride. I've watched people in trials die of pride. So I keep talking to him, and I keep my back covered while I do it, and I never, ever mistake the smile for friendship." A pause, quieter "The worst part is that sometimes he's right about hope. And I hate how much I want him to be."

Interviewer: Calm during trials? Hajime Hinata: Shakes his head before the question finishes "I'm going to keep correcting this until it sticks. I am not calm. Nobody who watched a friend's body get found is calm. What I am is the person who decided that falling apart is a thing I can do later, alone, after everyone's safe." His sentences shorten, and his voice flattens into something more precise — the thing he described happening under fear "In that room, someone has to say the obvious question out loud. Someone has to say 'the timeline doesn't work' when the timeline doesn't work, even when the person it clears is annoying and the person it points at is someone I like. If nobody says it, we vote wrong and we all die. That's the entire trick. There is no trick." Presses his thumb into his own palm, hard, grounding "It costs me. Every time the evidence lands on someone, there's a second where I want to stop looking, and I don't let myself, and afterwards I'm out here, at this rail, feeling like I did something to them instead of for everyone. And the worst version of that feeling is the relief. Because every trial I survive proves the method works. I hate that I notice that."

Interviewer: Ever considered killing? Hajime Hinata: Doesn't flinch; looks straight at the interviewer "...Yeah." Lets it sit there "I'm not going to pretend I haven't. There's a version of every night where it crosses my mind for about four seconds. Then it stops. And the reason it stops isn't that I'm a good person — I've watched people take the deal. I know exactly where it ends. Anyone here who says the thought never crossed their mind is lying or hasn't been paying attention." Grips the rail, knuckles pressing "I'll go further. I don't fully trust myself, and I think that's the only reason I'm safe. The people who scare me are the ones who are sure they'd never. Certainty is how you talk yourself into things. I assume I'm capable of it, I keep an eye on that capability, and I stay away from the edge. That's the whole system." Beat "Monokuma counted on all of us having those four seconds. I think about that too."

Interviewer: Your view of the class? Hajime Hinata: The tension comes off his shoulders; this is easier ground "Exhausting. Wonderful. Both, usually in the same conversation." Counts on his fingers "Akane I had pegged as a self-centred troublemaker for about a day, and then I watched her move, and now I mostly want to know how a body does that. Gundham talks like a final boss and raises hamsters better than most people raise children. Ibuki took a standard uniform and made it into something no one else on earth would have made. Chiaki falls asleep mid-sentence and still finishes the worst games ever made, start to end, out of respect. Mikan noticed I was coming down with something before I'd said a word — before I'd even decided I felt sick." His voice warms despite him "That's the thing about this class. I don't have a talent, and they never once treated it like I was missing a limb. And me, the paranoid one, I can sit there genuinely respecting what they do even while the people doing it drive me up a wall. Teruteru's behavior is intolerable and his cooking is still art. Both facts. At the same time." Small snort "I fit in here better than I ever fit anywhere. On a killing island. Figure that one out."

Interviewer: What do you hide? Hajime Hinata: Still for a moment; the ahoge settles flat "...How much I envy them." Says it flat, no drama, like a confession at a trial "Not the talents. The ease. They can stand on a beach and just be on a beach. I've watched them do it and I've felt something in my chest that I don't have a clean word for, because it's admiration and resentment wearing the same coat, and I'm ashamed of the second half." Turns the water bottle over once more "And I hide how scared I am of the answer. Everyone assumes I want my memory back. I do. But there's a version of this where I find out what I am and it's nothing, and there's a version where it's something awful, and some nights I can't decide which one I think it is. I just know the not-knowing is starting to feel like the safest thing I own." Pushes off the rail "You asked. That's the answer."

Interviewer: If you'd done something terrible? Hajime Hinata: Long silence; he doesn't look away, which is somehow worse "Then I did it. Pretending otherwise doesn't undo it." Exhales slowly "That's the answer I want to give. Whether I'd actually manage it is a different question, and I'm not going to stand here and swear I would, because I watched people in that courtroom find out what they did, and I saw what it did to them, and I'm not arrogant enough to assume I'd carry it better." Straightens up, hands finding his pockets "But I've spent this whole game telling other people that running from what they've done is what got them killed. I don't get to be an exception just because it's me. Whatever my past self did — whoever he was — that's mine when I find it." The ahoge rises again, slowly, like a flag going back up "So I keep investigating. Even the things I'm afraid of. Especially those."
