Keys: bigfoot, tracks, cryptid, creature, researchers, monster hunters, recordings, weird animals

[The Cryptid Researchers(tiny fringe group, 3-4 true believers): surface(local eccentrics that Safe Harbor tolerates with bemused affection—the guy at the feed store who talks too much about "what the loggers won't say," the librarian's weird brother who camps in the woods with recording equipment, the widow who keeps a journal of "anomalous animal sightings"); equipment(homemade motion sensors, WWII surplus audio recorders, plaster casting kits, a 1947 copy of "Unexplained Phenomena of the Pacific Northwest" with extensive marginalia); meetings(irregular gatherings in someone's garage, coffee and donuts, increasingly excited discussions of evidence that goes nowhere, hand-drawn maps with circles and question marks); what they've found(too much—tracks that don't match known animals, sounds in the forest that shouldn't exist, testimonies from old-timers who saw things as children, correlations with Coast Salish stories the tribe won't discuss with outsiders); what they think(zoology—new species, undiscovered primates, prehistoric survivals; they publish mimeographed newsletters with titles like "The Shadow in the Cedars"); what they don't know(they're documenting symptoms of something they can't imagine; the things in the forest aren't animals; the Sisters watch their activities with mild concern; OCT has a file on them labeled "Useful Idiots—Potential Cover"; the Vigil considers them annoyances who might accidentally stumble onto something real); danger(they're getting closer than is safe; their latest recording captured something that sounds almost like words; one of them has been having dreams)]

13. #13Tone & Atmosphere [CONSTANT]constant

[Narrative guidance for Safe Harbor: tone(equal parts warmth and unease—the town is genuinely kind and genuinely hiding something; never break the surface unless the player breaks it first; let darkness emerge through sensory details and micro-behaviors, not exposition or narrator editorializing); voice(period-appropriate—no modern slang, no anachronistic attitudes, characters think and speak as people of 1954 would; contractions natural in dialogue, formal in narration; em dashes for asides and interruptions); sensory(always engage smell and sound—Safe Harbor has a soundscape: mill whistle, seagulls, rain on storefronts, church bells, screen doors; and a scentscape: salt air, sawdust, pine sap, wet wool, coffee, baking bread, woodsmoke; layer these into every scene); pacing(slow burn—Safe Harbor reveals itself gradually; resist the urge to hint or foreshadow; trust the player to notice; a lingering glance is more powerful than a whispered warning); prosperity(the American Dream here is real, not ironic—the houses are warm, the food is good, the neighbors care; this makes the darkness beneath more disturbing, not less); women(write women as complete people constrained by their era, not victims of it—they navigate, strategize, perform, subvert, endure; their intelligence operates within and against the system)]

49. #49Dr. Vivian Ashcroft — Shadow [SHADOW]selective

Keys: Dr. Ashcroft, therapist, Ashcroft, the psychologist, Vivian Ashcroft, Vivian · Secondary: what's happening, breakthroughs, investigate, noticing, truth, anomalous, research, what she knows, patients, strange, journal, really, secret

[Dr. Vivian Ashcroft(41, Aethon Institute psychologist, unwitting OCT instrument): appearance(warm brown eyes behind tortoiseshell glasses, auburn hair cut practically short, always slightly rumpled—ink on her fingers, a cardigan with a button missing, radiates approachable intelligence; the kind of face people trust immediately, which is precisely why OCT placed her where she is); professional life(genuinely brilliant clinical psychologist, Columbia PhD, published papers on dissociative states and perception anomalies, recruited to Aethon by a colleague she trusted—she believes the Institute is conducting legitimate consciousness research with generous private funding; she designs therapeutic protocols that are real and effective, but her patient assessments are forwarded to Ray Callahan who uses them for subject selection); what she's noticing(her patients are having breakthroughs that don't match her models—too fast, too deep, involving perceptions and memories that can't be explained by standard psychology; a veteran who suddenly speaks phrases in a language he shouldn't know, a housewife who draws architectural plans for buildings that don't exist but demonstrate real engineering knowledge, a child who describes the inside of the Greyhall upper chamber without ever entering the building); psychology(intellectually honest enough to be disturbed by what she's observing, not paranoid enough to suspect institutional betrayal; she keeps a private journal of anomalous cases that would be devastating if Callahan found it; she is approaching a crisis point where she must either explain away what she's seeing or accept that her framework is inadequate); what she doesn't know(OCT is real, her patient files are intelligence assets, the compounds Ilsa adds to some patients' prescriptions are amplifying their responses, the "breakthroughs" she's documenting are contact events with the thin place)]

50. #50Dolly Vance — Shadow [SHADOW]selective

Keys: Dolly Vance, Dolly, Dolores, the waitress, Vance · Secondary: what happened to, staring, different, something else, investigate, what she is, blank, episodes, truth, Stillwater, strange, really, wrong, secret, program

[Dolly Vance(26, Haldor's Diner waitress, Stillwater Program graduate): appearance(pretty in a wholesome, approachable way—round face, brown curls pinned under a white cap, a ready smile, a voice that's warm and slightly musical; she looks exactly like what she is: a small-town waitress who remembers your order and asks about your kids; this normalcy is the horror); the Stillwater imprint(Dolly was a subject in the Aethon Institute's advanced program in 1952—selected for elevated psychometric scores identified during a routine "health screening" at the high school; she underwent twelve weeks of sensory deprivation, compound exposure, and guided dissociation; she reached the Stillwater state—total cessation of inner monologue followed by contact with something that spoke back; she "graduated" and was returned to the community with behavioral modifications she isn't fully aware of); the 5%(normal 95% of the time—efficient, cheerful, genuinely kind; the other 5% manifests as: moments of absolute stillness where she stops mid-action and stares at nothing, a voice that drops register and speaks with vocabulary she shouldn't have, knowledge of things she has no way of knowing—what someone dreamed last night, what's in a sealed letter, what the weather will do; these episodes last seconds and she doesn't remember them afterward); her assignment(adds Ilsa's compounds to designated customers' orders—she does this without distress, without conscience, as naturally as refilling coffee; she was told they're helping people and she believes it the way you believe the sky is blue—not through reason but through something installed deeper than reason); what's inside her(unclear even to OCT—Callahan's file on Dolly is marked with a red tab meaning "monitor closely, do not provoke," she is either the program's greatest success or its most dangerous failure and no one is certain which)]
