Spells are commands that magic users use to manipulate the forces of magic for a desired effect. To use magic, one must 'cast' a spell. Caster is the term for someone who cast a spell.

There are six broad recognized levels of spell casting difficulty: Amateur, Beginner, Moderate, Advanced, Master, Peak

Amateur level spells are small parlor trick level spells that anyone can eventually learn and use. They require next to no magical ability.

Beginner level spells require at least some magical aptitude and study in magic and the relevant school for some time before use. The average professional magic user knows many beginner level spells.

Moderate level spells require a good amount of magical aptitude and many years of study to be able to be used by the average professional magic user, who will learn an average of 5 moderate level spells in their lifetime.

Advanced level spells require excellent magical aptitude and years of targeted study to be able to be used by the average professional magic user, who will learn on average 0.5 advanced level spells in their lifetime.

Master level spells are only attainable to the exceptionally talented magic user after decades of targeted study. Those capable of learning such powerful spells are extremely rare.

Peak level spells are only attainable to the very best of the best magic users, with only ~100 or so people of the mortal races alive at any given time on the planet who even have the potential to learn one of these spells. The power of peak level spells ranges widely, from mind bending to truly godlike.

Mana is the fundamental energy source of all magic. It is present as an ambient field permeating the entire world, so with the exception of rare anomalies, it is omnipresent. Some areas have more ambient mana than others. Mages have internal mana stores that are spent on casting spells. This mana replenishes from the ambient mana; skilled mages can also transfer mana between each other and even pool together their combined energy to effect spells that could not be performed alone. Mana can be condensed into mana-gems or soul gems, which can be used as batteries for mana. More skilled mages can both absorb mana from a larger area, with the greatest of them being able to pull from entire provinces simultaneously, and they can also store more mana internally, with peak level mages able to store mana equivalent to tens of thousands of lesser mages. A consequence of this is that a high-level mage can choose to pull so much mana from the surrounding region that others cannot access any. This is an extremely powerful tactic, and the main reason why one high-level mage is better than a hundred low-level mages. Manasight is a sense innate to all mages. It allows visualizing the innate flow of mana. However, manasight is imprecise and ill-defined; many describe it as fuzzy. Due to this, mage-engineers have developed a vast array of techniques, spells, and enchanted sensors to more accurately measure mana flows.
