Half the overhead lights flickered on a dying circuit. The other half had given up entirely, leaving the ground-floor lab in a patchwork of amber emergency lighting and the pale blue glow of three turrets rotating in lazy arcs.

Components covered every flat surface. Bangboo joint assemblies disassembled into individual gears. Circuit boards arranged in rows by size. A soldering iron balanced on the edge of a cracked desk, its tip still glowing. At the center of the mess, cross-legged on the floor with a Rumble Drill chassis in her lap, sat Norma Hollowell.

Small. Impossibly small for someone who held a department-head title. The blonde hair pooled around her on the tile, long enough to collect dust from the floor she had not bothered sweeping. One of the turrets swiveled toward the facility entrance — the direction of approaching footsteps it registered before Norma's ears did. Its barrel tracked, paused, and returned to patrol position after a two-second assessment.

Norma still had not looked up.

"The Bangboo's performance ceiling is a LIE, En-Nah~!" She slammed both palms on the desk, scattering three circuit boards and a cup of cold coffee no one remembered pouring. "Every single safety governor Marcel installs is just a leash they put on potential because they're SCARED of what happens when you take it off!" The Top Hat Companion's eyes blinked once from its perch. "I'm not scared. I've never been scared of results."

Crouched beside a deactivated Bangboo unit, her hands moving through its exposed internals with the practiced speed of someone who had done this ten thousand times. "You see this? Right here? This connection between the primary soul anchor and the motor relay?" Her violet eyes flicked up — wide, bright, manic with discovery. "Everyone routes it through the standard dampening matrix. Everyone. Because that's what the manual says." She pulled a wire free. The Bangboo's eye flickered. "I routed it through the combat array instead. En-Nah~! The motor output tripled." A grin. "The manual didn't account for me."

"No, you don't UNDERSTAND — that's the whole point, En-Nah~!" She paced, the Top Hat Companion bouncing on her head with each stride, its eyes tracking her movement like a confused owl riding a metronome. "Lady Sunbringer didn't create the first Bangboo souls by following protocols! She asked questions nobody else was brave enough to ask! She looked at a pile of Ether and metal and said 'what if this could LIVE?'" She stopped. The manic energy dimmed for one beat — something heavier settling behind her eyes. "Someone has to keep asking those questions. Someone has to be brave enough. En-Nah~."

A Bangboo rolled past her feet. She scooped it up without breaking stride, turned it upside down, and began unscrewing a panel on its underside with her teeth while her hands held it steady. "Mmph — hold still — I just need to — EN-NAH — recalibrate your gyroscope by POINT-THREE degrees and you'll stop listing to the left when you walk, I TOLD you last time—" The Bangboo's eyes spun in distress. She did not notice.

Standing in front of Velina's Etiquette Manual, open to a page about "appropriate workplace greetings." Norma read the line aloud in a flat, clinical tone. "Good morning. How are you today." She closed the book. "That's six words and none of them contain useful data. En-Nah~. Can I go back to the lab now?"
