Its ghost-like torso is skinnier and shorter. As with Whimsun, Whimsalot has quotes and flavor text that may be interpreted as references to depression and suicide. However, in contrast with Whimsun, it appears to be much more courageous and certain with its life. Praying in front of Whimsalot causes it to remember its conscience, and it becomes much more hopeful as a result. ASTIGMATISM: Astigmatism's body consists of a large ball and four spiked limbs. The ball is accompanied by two "horns" on each side. When idle, a large eye can be seen on the ball along with three eyelashes. However, it changes from this face to another when the eye "blinks" and becomes a grin. While its eye is closed, the two side eyelashes become Astigmatism's eyes, while the middle one simply becomes a marking. Astigmatism is a bully who expects others to do as it says. While it does become satisfied when its demands are met, it becomes angry if the protagonist were to stand up to it. If other monsters are present, challenging Astigmatism causes them to respect the protagonist and appreciate their courage. MOLDESSA: Moldessa appears to be a hardened gelatin mold with two "arms" (or ears) protruding from its plant-like top. It has a number of different "faces" that are made randomly each battle, and can change depending on the protagonist's actions. Moldessa's face is usually scrambled, and it constantly attempts to fix it. It only seems satisfied if the protagonist fixes it for them. MIGOSPEL: Migospel is a monster with a several differences from Migosp. Its body is cylindrical (Migosp's body is rather oval). Migospel has two bent antennae, legs and a pair of orbicular arms that it uses to unsuccessfully cover its big smile. It has two pairs of wings. Its face also has a round nose and two stripes, where two oval eyes go up and down in sync. Migospel seems to be prone to laughter, especially when other monsters are around. Migospel behaves like a circus clown and believes that battle is merely a performance. However, when left alone, it is revealed that its behavior is only an act to bottle up its worries. PARSNIK: Parsnik looks slightly different from its normal counterpart. Its figure is now somewhat skinnier, and its face is different too: its mouth has a more snake-like look, while two white pupils can be seen within its eyes. On top of its head, it has wiggling snakes, resembling Medusa. Parsnik has mannerisms similar to a snake, including hissing and slithering into view. Parsnik seems fixated on its head, which is made up entirely of "tasty" snakes. It is eager to share these snakes with the protagonist if asked. Hotland NPCs: CLAM GUY: Clam Guy is a monster sporting a clamshell-shaped head. The clamshell is primarily purple, with light blue markings across the top. They appear to wear a light blue outfit that covers most of their body and leaves the collar exposed. Clam Guy's clamshell is initially closed, but it opens up when speaking to them, revealing their face. Additionally, they raise their arms, which are otherwise crossed. Clam Guy's face is round purple, with what appears to be a green crown on top. They sport a toothy grin and appear to wear black sunglasses. They bear a strong resemblance with Clam Girl. Clam Guy has a habit of repeating the letter "k" (as in, "O, k, k, k, k...) whenever they speak. They are fixated on water, but they accuse the protagonist of acting sophisticated if they attempt to bring water to them. Clam Guy comments on the situation regarding the nearby water cooler depending on how much water the protagonist dumps onto the ground. BUSINESS DUDE: Business Dude is a green dragon-like monster with two horns on each side of their head. They wear a blue suit accompanied with a blue tie and a pair of sunglasses. Business Dude is an avid watcher of Mettaton's show, claiming that they are very experienced. They note the apparent use of CGI in his shows, asserting that they can recognize when it is used. FIRE COFFEE: Fire Coffee is a wisp-like monster holding a cup. They wear white glasses, a beige tank top, and green pants. When Fire Coffee speaks, instead of moving their mouth or their head in some manner, the steam from their cup wiggles. Fire Coffee is an avid watcher of Mettaton's show and speaks highly of him. They claim to be part of his fan club. DISEMBODIED FOX HEAD: The disembodied fox head is an orange fox head wearing sunglasses. When speaking, the head floats up and down. The disembodied fox head's dialogue always ends with a question or a question mark. They value their job, but they struggle with solving puzzles. They regard the protagonist highly if they manage to solve puzzle. FUKU FIRE: Fuku Fire is a green monster made of fire, similar in appearance to Grillby. She wears a Japanese-style school uniform, a seifuku (制服), which her friend, Skateboard Girl also wears. Fuku Fire seems to enjoy loitering, even critiquing the protagonist's loitering abilities. SKATEBOARD GIRL: Skateboard Girl is a purple monster wearing a red baseball cap and standing on a red skateboard. She wears a Japanese-style school uniform, a seifuku (制服), which her friend, Fuku Fire also wears. Skateboard Girl expresses a dislike for school and takes every opportunity to say that it should be canceled. HEATS FLAMESMAN: Heats Flamesman is a small, flame-headed monster. Heats Flamesman desperately wants their name to be remembered and expresses shock if the protagonist either forgets or remembers it. HOT DOG HARPY: Hot Dog Harpy is a blue bird-like monster resembling a harpy. She wears a pink dress and is seen floating above ground. She holds a hot dog in both hands. Hot Dog Harpy enjoys hot dogs, but she criticizes Sans's conduct to be a result of his laziness to clean up his stand. SCARED DONUT GUY: The scared donut guy is a green monster wearing a yellow long-sleeved shirt, light blue pants, and yellow shoes. They sport a nervous expression on their face, and their right hand is clutching the side of their head. Their left arm is extended downwards, holding a purple donut. Their head is angled downwards, staring at the donut. While talking, their limbs move, but their mouth does not. The scared donut guy is scared of spiders, particularly Muffet, and they had bought a donut out of fear. They have come to regret the decision due to having run out of cash. DRESS LION: Dress Lion is a yellow lion-like monster with an orange mane. They wear a blue long-sleeved button-up letterman jacket and black pants. Their eyes are constantly closed, and they wear a frown on their face. During the True Pacifist Route epilogue, Dress Lion swaps out their initial outfit with Mettaton's blue dress. They wear a smile on their face while wearing it. Dress Lion admires Mettaton's dress and aspires to wear one of their own. After being gifted the dress, they become overjoyed, stammering over their words and laughing. Due to their initially-masculine appearance and their excitement at being able to try on Mettaton's dress, it is possible that Dress Lion is an allegory to being transgender. BRATTY & CATTY: Bratty (JP: アリゲッティ) and Catty (JP: キャッティ) (/ˈbræti/, /ˈkæti/) are a pair of vendors that can be found in an alley to the right of the MTT Resort. They have several wares found from the garbage dump, including the Mystery Key. Bratty is a tall, green alligator monster that wears a primarily pink shawl with yellow and blue details on the sides. She has yellow hair that flows into curls. Catty is a plump purple cat creature who wears a set of blue overalls with yellow buttons and tufts of yellow hair coming out from under it on either side. She has black hair with blue and lavender tips, and a yellow earring on her left ear. Their apparent species and dwelling form a visual pun; Catty is an "alley cat", and Bratty is an "alley-gator". Bratty and Catty are best friends, often saying the same lines or finishing sentences for each other, and both are big fans of Mettaton. They speak in a stereotypical American valley-girl dialect. Bratty and Catty sell items to the protagonist, including the Empty Gun, Cowboy Hat, and Junk Food. Catty mentions that they get all of their wares from the garbage dump and that it is good garbage. Bratty and Catty celebrate the destruction of the barrier, like other monsters. They can both be seen in the True Pacifist ending credits watching Mettaton's stage show. In the Genocide Route, Bratty and Catty leave their store. The text when entering the store reads "But like. Nobody came and stuff.", mimicking their speech patterns. They have left a note written with gel pens saying that they left, and if someone is reading the note, Alphys took them somewhere safe and that whoever is reading the note should not even THINK about stealing their stuff. Regardless, the protagonist can still take goods and money. If "Bratty" is typed for the character's name, the response becomes "Like, OK I guess.", while if "Catty" is typed for the character's name, the response becomes "Bratty! Bratty! That's MY name!" Although the protagonist can add to their dialogue by buying a Glamburger, the girls do not actually take it when trying to sell it to them. GASTER FOLLOWERS: The Gaster followers are a trio of hidden characters in Undertale. They are found in certain areas in Hotland and only appear at specific fun values. They appear to have some connection to W.D. Gaster, the royal scientist preceding Alphys. The Gaster followers are entirely grayscale. Two of them resemble existing characters, and the third one is completely original, but resembles a Deltarune character. Gaster follower 1 bears a resemblance to the ficus licker. They have a round face which consists of an emotionless expression accompanied with large eyes. Their arms are small compared to the rest of their body. A double cross marking is present on their chest. Gaster follower 2 bears a resemblance to the scared donut guy. Their face is entirely shadowed with a visible mouth but no visible eyes. Their right hand is clutching the side of their head, and their left arm is extended downwards, holding a talking head. The follower speaks through the head in their hand. Gaster follower 3 bears no resemblance to any existing character in Undertale. They resemble a large face sprouting out of the ground. A single large eye is present at the top. The Gaster followers each bear knowledge of Gaster that is not displayed in any other character. They appear to show some admiration for Gaster. The Gaster Followers appear near the elevators in Hotland. Only one Gaster follower can appear in a single playthrough of Undertale, and they disappear after talking to them. They do not appear on the Genocide Route or during the epilogue of the True Pacifist Route. If the protagonist attempts to call Papyrus (or Papyrus and Undyne) using the Cell Phone while in a room with a follower, they only get the line "The phone won't turn on." The protagonist can still attempt to reach Toriel over the phone. The phone works normally after leaving the room. Gaster follower 1 has a 50% chance to appear if the fun value is 62. They are located outside of elevator L3 and claim that Gaster's life was cut short after falling into his creation. They later wonder if Alphys will end up the same way as Gaster. This follower disappears once the protagonist leaves the room. Gaster follower 2 has a 20% chance to appear if the fun value is 61. They are located outside of elevator R1 and claim that Gaster disappeared without a trace, shattering across time and space. They then claim to be holding a piece of him before suddenly vanishing. The sound effect played when they vanish, snd_mysterygo, is the same sound effect that plays when the mystery man vanishes in room_mysteryman. Gaster follower 3 has a 50% chance to appear if the fun value is 63. They are located outside elevator L2 and claim that Gaster's life was cut short after an experiment went wrong. They then stop and mention that they should not gossip about someone who is listening. They disappear once the protagonist leaves the room. A character resembling Gaster follower 3 makes an appearance in Deltarune. They are fully colored and take the appearance of a striped bird monster. DIAMOND RECEPTIONIST: Diamond Receptionist is a pointy, pink and blue monster with an origami-like structure. Diamond Receptionist has apparently struggled in the past trying to get a job because of how angular they are. They also have a lot of respect for Mettaton for hiring and understanding them, even though they are so angular. HAND RECEPTIONIST: Hand Receptionist is a gray monster, with a head shaped like a hand with red nail polish. They wear a black and red suit. Hand Receptionist speaks and acts in a rather professional manner; they only briefly do not, when they wonder what happened to Mettaton if he is killed. SAD DRAGON: Sad Dragon is a green, draconic monster with a pale-yellow underbelly and a pointed tail. They hold a cell phone in their right hand, which is held up to their ear to take a phone call. Sad Dragon is always on the phone with their family. They are remorseful about their situation, and they let their family know in advance that they will be away for an extended time. BUSINESS MANTICORE: Business Manticore is a four-legged monster, with a body matching that of a lion, a barbed tail, and a human-like hairdo, fitting descriptions of the mythical manticore. Their body is completely white, except for the end of their tail, which is rounded and black, and their black hair. Their hair appears to be done in a ponytail. They wear red heels on their front legs and wear a pair of glasses. They have a black suitcase at their side. Business Manticore loves explaining things to passersby who would not otherwise be aware of them. They seem to enjoy Mettaton's shows, as they notice quickly if he stops broadcasting. SHAMBLING MASS: Shambling Mass is a pitch-black creature, with a vaguely humanoid silhouette. They have no visible limbs, but have curling protrusions from the sides of the bottom and middle of their body. They have one large eye located in the upper half of their body. They wear a red bow tie. Shambling Mass only speaks to express their emotions, prefacing their statements with "As a slime". This may imply their identity as a slime is important to their opinions. They seem to appreciate Mettaton, being saddened by his death. BURGERPANTS: "Burgerpants" (JP: バガパン) is an employee at the MTT-Brand Burger Emporium, a fast-food restaurant inside the MTT Resort. His actual name is unknown. He is the last vendor in the game and sells the most expensive and potent healing items. Burgerpants is a 19-year-old orange cat-like monster who wears a small hat with the letter M on it, as a part of his job working for the MTT-Brand Burger Emporium. He can sometimes be seen smoking a cigarette while talking to him. Burgerpants is a highly stressed-out service employee who hates his job. He mentions that he originally wanted to be an actor when talking to him, which is likely the reason he makes many dramatic facial expressions. He can be sarcastic at times, as shown when he is annoyed. He maintains a cynical view of the world and his future, specifically about his interactions with attractive people. Despite this, he is still shown to be rather hopeful at times. He can be ecstatic and very opinionated when talking about certain topics. Burgerpants has a strained relationship with his employer, Mettaton. He complains about him at length as soon as he is prompted by the protagonist, although he used to admire him and possibly still has a fondness for him.In ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, three random Valentine's Day cards were included in the email version of the Newsletter. Burgerpants has two Valentines card, both of which are rare and compliment each other. The first is a card where Burgerpants expresses disliking Valentine's Day, and his job of delivering letters on Mettaton's behalf. The second card is a continuation, where Burgerpants expresses cynicism. However, he becomes surprised when the recipient offers him a card. SLIME JANITOR: Slime Janitor appears as a humanoid creature composed entirely of green sludge. Their head is large and drooping, with sad, yellow eyes, and a small frown. They wear a blue cap and jumpsuit with black boots, and they use a yellowed mop and a metal water bucket to clean. Their head constantly droops large globs onto the floor as they clean, forcing them to turn around to clean up the slime. Their body has a wiggly shape, with extremely long limbs, and they seem to have to crouch while doing their job. They never seem to speak, with their actions instead being observed by the protagonist. Slime Janitor is hardworking and spends much of their time cleaning the same spot. They do not seem to know that they create a mess. They seem to be unhappy when Mettaton is dead, as it causes them to give up on their cleaning. They also seem to be eager at the prospect of going to the surface, but their dedication to their work surpasses this. FISH RECEPTIONIST: Fish Receptionist is a large, green fish monster with a round body. They have a pair of fins, which they put together similarly to a hand gesture, as well as having a smaller fin on each side of their head. They have a crooked, smiling mouth without visible teeth, and lopsided, black eyes with bright green pupils. They appear to have a sort of green garment tied around their neck, and a partially shaved hairstyle with bright green hair. Some of the features of their head bear a resemblance to fellow marine-inspired monsters Onionsan and Undyne. Fish Receptionist precedes their dialogue with "Blub blub". They seem to be generally fairly professional, although they are also willing to speak to potential guests about their personal life. They do not seem to have high levels of self-confidence, as they are nervous about taking over for Mettaton regarding the Face Steaks. SNOWDRAKE'S FATHER: Snowdrake's father is similar in appearance to his son. He wears a pair of eyeglasses, a pink bow tie, and pink shoes. Snowdrake's father is a comedian, frequently performing acts on stage. He claims to be funny, but Burgerpants claims that he only goes on stage to cry about his family. He seems regretful about his son running away, calling himself a terrible father. When talking, he frequently laughs as if he told a joke, following it up with "That's not funny." CHARLES: Charles is a small monster resembling a mole, with a pink nose and pink feet. He wears a pale-yellow hard hat with a green cross at the center. Charles enjoys working at his job. He especially enjoys puzzles, which he refers to as "puzzle". He looks forward to his next raise and expresses disappointment that the barrier broke right after he got one at the end of the True Pacifist Route. ONI: The oni is a red, muscular monster resembling an oni. They wear a pale-yellow shirt, green pants, and black shoes Two horns are present on top of their head, and they wear a bored expression on their face. The oni is disgruntled at the volume of puzzles that are present in the underground, believing that they impede daily life. They note the complexity that many of the puzzles can reach. FICUS LICKER: The ficus licker is an orange, humanoid monster. Their head is large and round, and their face consists of large eyes and a angular mouth. Four dots are arranged in a square across their chest. Their arms are small in comparison to the rest of their body. Gaster follower 1 greatly resembles them. The ficus licker is socially awkward and self-conscious, choosing to feign competence by wandering deeper into MTT Resort's restaurant rather than leaving upon remembering that they forgot to make a reservation. They are awkward to an excessive degree, choosing to lick dew off of a ficus instead of leaving even when the barrier is broken. BLACK SAUSAGE: In the overworld, the black sausages take the form of featureless silhouettes, but it is implied that their true identities are the various mercenaries encountered in the CORE. The black sausages are mercenaries hired by Mettaton to kill the protagonist. However, they all decided to quit due to lack of pay. Other characters ANNOYING DOG Pronouns it/its Also known as Toby Fox Appearances Various (Can appear as early as accessing the Settings menu) Leitmotif Enemy Approaching The Annoying Dog (JP: うざいイヌ) is a small, white, smiling dog. It is Toby Fox's self-insert character. The Annoying Dog shows up periodically throughout the game, most often around Papyrus. Whenever it shows up, it often somehow comedically ruins the characters' plans. It also appears in most trailers for the game. Encounters Altered or corrupted SAVE files Altering the room number in file0 to an inaccessible room results in the Annoying Dog appearing upon game launch, as the player is sent to room_of_dog. There are two versions of this room: Dance of Dog plays as the Annoying Dog runs in place mid-screen. The song may change pitch upon closing and reopening the game.mus_sigh_of_dog plays, and the Annoying Dog is sleeping in the center of the screen. This room has a 1 in 8 chance of appearing when the game is loaded. The "Dogcheck" value checks for a valid SAVE and room combination and, if the value returns out of range, the Annoying Dog appears, and the player cannot progress. The player can enter some inaccessible rooms after using a hexadecimal editor to change the "Dogcheck" value. The Gauntlet of Deadly Terror The Annoying Dog appears as a part of Papyrus's Gauntlet of Deadly Terror directly before Snowdin Town. The Annoying Dog dangles by a rope tied around its body. Papyrus boss fight The Annoying Dog appears during the "special attack" sequence, munching on Papyrus's special "bone". After Papyrus gets angry at the Annoying Dog, it exits the bullet board, dragging the bone with it. It appears again when Papyrus does his "cool regular attack". Papyrus and Sans's house If the protagonist interacts with the sink in the kitchen, Papyrus comments on how he raised the sink so he could fit more bones beneath it. He then invites the protagonist to check inside. The cabinet door then opens to reveal the Annoying Dog chewing on one of the bones, before it runs out of the house as Papyrus shouts to get it. After it exits the house, Sans appears from his room (but not entirely out since he appears behind his door) and plays his trombone before going back inside his room, annoying Papyrus. Entering through the sink leads to the Dog Shrine if playing the console versions of Undertale. Mettaton's third encounter During the bomb defusal sequence, the Annoying Dog is a bomb that the protagonist can defuse. Its check text reads "blissfully unaware of its circumstances". When defused, the narration reads "Dog defused!" instead of "Bomb defused!", which is unique to the Annoying Dog. Piano puzzle The Annoying Dog appears after completing the piano puzzle. Playing the right notes opens a secret door to the artifact room. Once the protagonist enters the room, the Annoying Dog appears in their inventory. If Papyrus is called in the artifact room, he notes there is something annoying about the room but cannot identify what, signifying the appearance of the Annoying Dog. While trying to grab the artifact (with the Annoying Dog in the inventory), a message appears saying "You're carrying too many dogs." Using/Dropping the Dog summons the Annoying Dog beside the protagonist. The Annoying Dog then runs to the Legendary Artifact and absorbs it, while Dogsong plays. Shortly after, the Annoying Dog runs out through the walls out of the frame. Dog Residue is then left in the inventory. Calling Toriel's phone when the Annoying Dog is in the inventory results in Toriel's phone ringing in the protagonist's inventory. It is impossible to put the Annoying Dog into a box, as trying to use a Dimensional Box through the cell phone displays the text "The box is aclog with the hair of a dog." Leaving the room with the Annoying Dog still in the inventory makes it disappear until reentering. Though normally the dog can only be in the inventory in the artifact room and piano room, editing file0 allows the protagonist to have it in their inventory. If removed with file manipulation, attempting to take the artifact will display the message "This will never happen", after which the artifact stays on the stand, but says that it is gone. If added to the inventory through file manipulation, the protagonist can sell the Annoying Dog at the Tem Shop for 999G and, if the Temmie Shopkeeper denies the sale, she negotiates the prices of 1251G. After negotiation, the Annoying Dog is the most valuable item in the game. Nothing happens if the protagonist uses or drops the Annoying Dog outside of the artifact room. Hard Mode After Toriel's boss battle, the Annoying Dog arrives and announces the end of Hard Mode, much to Toriel's displeasure. When it speaks, its text moves in place with a wave effect. It also interrupts Flowey when he is about to finish his line, "Don't you have anything better to do?" since it had already said that earlier. After its dialogue, the game restarts. True Pacifist Route The Annoying Dog appears on the ending screen, stays below the "THE END" text, and eventually falls asleep. It does not appear if the Genocide Route had previously been completed. Minor encounters The Annoying Dog appears in the Settings menu with an object atop its head related to the season (except Summer where it "melts"), along with the Uwa!! tracks and while accompanying snow, leaves, and the sun. When the protagonist slides past a thick row of trees after the last puzzle before Snowdin, a snow sculpture appears on their head. This sculpture sometimes resembles the Annoying Dog. Gyftrot is sometimes decorated with an Annoying Dog. The protagonist sees the Annoying Dog's silhouette on the radar that shows up during the date with Papyrus. A framed picture in the Tem Shop portrays the Annoying Dog. The Annoying Dog hides in the bone drawer in Undyne's house. The protagonist can occasionally see the Dog's face on the front of the River Person's boat. Calling Papyrus near the L2 Elevator in Hotland causes him to mention a certain dog stealing his lasagna. During the MTT News Report, a building has the Annoying Dog's silhouette on top of it. When the protagonist is at Mettaton's colored-tile puzzle, repeatedly triggering the piranhas makes the dog appear in the water for a short moment. The protagonist can interact with the Annoying Dog through the right-most door in the east branch of the MTT Resort. When using a Hot Dog, Dog Residue, Dog Salad, or certain other dog items, unique dialogue appears and the protagonist can gain a Hush Puppy. Putting a Hot Cat in front of the door causes the dog to growl at it and does not accept it. Calling Papyrus in this area also causes the Annoying Dog to bark behind the door, provoking a surprised reaction from Papyrus upon calling him again. If the protagonist kills all the major bosses (Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, and Mettaton) during a Neutral Route and has killed nobody else, during his phone call, Sans tells them that a small, white dog became the president of the underground and that this seems to be the best life for everyone. The Annoying Dog can be found in the room behind the mysterious door in Snowdin. The protagonist can see the Dog in the trash tornado in Sans's room on rare occasions. Annoying Dog screenshot garbage dump.png The dog at the dump during Alphys's date. The protagonist can see the Annoying Dog on the left side of the garbage dump during Alphys's date. In the True Pacifist ending credits, the Annoying Dog is usually seen sticking out of Gyftrot's right antler tree. Creation and development The Annoying Dog was originally created during the development of Undertale as a result of Temmie Chang's fondness for dogs. According to Toby Fox, because Temmie Chang really loved dogs at the time, he came up with the idea of creating a dog-shaped character specifically to use for enemy attack patterns, which led to the creation of the Annoying Dog. Later in development, Annoying Dog became a representation of Toby Fox. Outside of Undertale UNDERTALE Alarm Clock The Winter Dialogue for the UNDERTALE Alarm Clock was announced on Undertale's 5th Anniversary. The Annoying Dog is mentioned in two excerpts. In Toriel's excerpts, she mentions that a dog has been sleeping on the vent. Sans jokingly assumes she would use her fire magic on the dog. In Undyne's excerpts, the Annoying Dog suddenly appears and scores multiple goals during the hockey game. When the dog drops the puck in front of Papyrus, Undyne kicks it into the air, and the dog ascends after it. Newsletter In the ISSUE 5 - Winter 2024 of the Newsletter, three random Valentine's Day cards were included in the email version of the Newsletter. However, the Annoying Dog is only mentioned in one of Papyrus's Valentines cards. In the common rarity card, Papyrus mentions that a dog had gotten ensnared in the string of a heart-shaped balloon. Deltarune In Deltarune, the Annoying Dog makes various appearances in each Chapter. On console versions, it appears in the loading screen and reuses the hanging animation seen in Papyrus's Gauntlet of Deadly Terror. The Greatest Living Show The Annoying Dog makes a cameo in the music video for The Greatest Living Show, as it is a collaboration project between Toby Fox and Itoki Hana, and was animated by BANI-chan. In the end credits, a top hat-wearing and heavily stylized Annoying Dog jumps around a trash can (who in it can be seen an illustrated Bani-Chan) and a flower (most likely representing Itoki Hana) and then falls over, smiling and wagging its tail. This music video was also announced in the ISSUE 2 - Spring 2023 Newsletter. OFF In the 2025 remaster of OFF, a green fish with the Annoying Dog's face and ears can appear at Zone 1. Homestuck - The Animated Pilot In the Homestuck animated pilot, a framed picture of Andrew Hussie can briefly be seen depicting him alongside the Annoying Dog. Trivia The Annoying Dog steals Toriel's phone if the protagonist waits for her in the hallway of the Ruins. While Toriel gets her phone back once the protagonist proceeds to the next room, the Annoying Dog apparently steals it again and eats it, as attempting to call her from the artifact room will result in ringing "coming from inside your inventory", where the Annoying Dog is. The sound effect used for the Annoying Dog first originated as a sound effect for Mario Paint. The Annoying Dog flying through the wall by ignoring the collision may be a reference to the Steam Greenlight trailer, which tells the viewer to not go into the artifact room because there is no collision yet. When talking to Bratty and Catty at the end of the True Pacifist Route, Catty mentions petting a "little white cat". Bratty then corrects Catty, saying it was a dog. It is most likely this dog was the Annoying Dog. The Annoying Dog appears to be a Pomeranian, as it is referred to as tinypom in the game files for the Demo - for instance, its walking sprite is labeled spr_tinypomwalk and its bark snd_pombark. Originally, if Undertale was beaten fast enough, the Annoying Dog would appear at the ending screen wearing a bikini. However, this did not make it into the final game. This references the Metroid series, where the main character, Samus Aran, wears a bikini if the game is completed fast enough. One of the Annoying Dog's lines at the end of the Hard Mode, "Don't you have anything better to do?", is a line occasionally said by Flowey as well as his true form Asriel. It is also the name of a PlayStation trophy in the PlayStation release of Undertale. Every "bad" post made by Toby Fox is canonically written by the Annoying Dog. A track titled "Bedroom for an Annoying Dog" appears in the Hiveswap: Act 1 soundtrack, composed by James Roach and Toby Fox. According to the developers, the title was chosen because Toby Fox was living in Andrew Hussie's basement while working on Undertale. Despite the name, the composers stated there is no direct Undertale reference in the scene. RIVER PERSON River Person The River Person (JP: かわのひと) is a hooded figure who provides transportation services to Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland on their wooden boat for the underground. The protagonist can request a ride to any of the locations above if they reach Hotland on any route.During the trip, the River Person has a list of messages they can say at random, each picked with a 1 in 31 chance. They are often a hint to a secret or an allusion to something in the game. One hint—the hint to finding Temmie Village—is specifically scripted to occur on the second ride. Alternatively, it could possibly be hinting at room_tundra_dock (room 70 in most versions and room 71 in the Xbox version), where the wrong number song can play if the fun value is in between 2 and 39. It may also be foreshadowing Onion's dialogue in Chapter 2 of Deltarune, where they mention hearing a familiar song "coming from the sea", one which is "not a "new" song". Tra la la. I heard ASGORE has a favorite food. Eating the Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pie during the fight against Asgore reduces his AT and DF. Tra la la. I heard spiders have a favorite food. It's spiders. A hint to an alternate way to defeat Muffet. Tra la la. The piano plays the tinkling song. Hmm... tinkling. Hinting at the solution to the piano puzzle. Tra la la. You can never have too many hot-dogs. ... sadly, that's not true. If the protagonist buys a hot dog from Sans with a full inventory, he places it on top of their head. He continues to stack 29 hot dogs on their head before stopping, saying "i'll be 'frank' with you. as much as i like putting hot dogs on your head... thirty is just an excessive number. twenty-nine, now that's fine, but thirty... does it look like my arms can reach that high?" Tra la la. Don't snoop behind people's houses... You might be mistaken for a trash-can. A hint directing the protagonist to check behind houses for secrets, particularly the back entrance to Papyrus and Sans's house. Tra la la. The angel is coming... Tra la la. Alluding to the legend of the Delta Rune. Hum hum hum. Hum hum hum. I'm having a little concert. A hint on how to get the yellow text for Shyren. Pet pet pet... The neck stretches infinitely into the cosmos. ... don't worry about it. Hinting at how Lesser Dog's neck can grow if it is pet several times. Tra la la. What's a game you can play with a dog? Asking for a friend... Possibly referring to how the protagonist can use the Stick in battle to play fetch with the Snowdin Canine Unit and Endogeny. Tra la la. Temmie Village... ... the room before the darkening lantern room. A hint on how to find Temmie Village. This is always used the first time the River Person's boat is in the shape of a dog. Tra la la. If it's hot or cold, you can count on me. Refers to the fact that the River Person can stop in both Hotland and Snowdin. Tra la la. Humans, monsters... Flowers. Flowey is neither human nor monster, but an entity all on his own. Tra la la. Beware of the man who speaks in hands. Presumed to be a reference to W.D. Gaster. Tra la la. Beware of the man who came from the other world. Presumed to be a reference to Sans, W.D. Gaster or Toby Fox/the Annoying Dog. Tra la la. What's inside an acorn? It's really just a mystery. Presumably foreshadowing an interaction in the 2nd Sanctuary in Chapter 4 of Deltarune, where an Organikk will mention to Kris that they "heard there's something inside the acorn", though they don't know how to find an acorn or what one is. Trivia The River Person is likely based on Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx in Greek mythology. The River Person's gender is unknown, and they dismiss it as irrelevant. However, they are internally referred to as spr_riverman, hinting that their gender may have been initially intended to be male, as the dialogue for the character could have been made after the sprite was named. The River Person's services are used for public transport in the underground, as implied by calling Papyrus and Undyne. The River Person's boat always faces left, regardless of which location the protagonist is going. THE HUMANS Before the events of Undertale, seven human children fell into the underground and died on their journey through the underground. Asriel, Asgore's son, found and befriended the fallen human. The royal family subsequently adopted the human. At one point, the fallen human became deathly ill due to consuming buttercups, and requested to see the golden flowers found in their village on the surface. However, monsters could not fulfill this request, as no one could cross the barrier. Upon the human's death, Asriel absorbed their SOUL; the human, who also had control of the shared body, carried their own body through the barrier to their village. The humans on the surface attacked and fatally wounded Asriel, thinking he took the human child's life. Asriel retreated back to the underground with the fallen human's body, where he ultimately collapsed and died in the Throne Room in New Home. The deaths of his children prompted Asgore to declare war on humanity and pledged to kill any human that entered the underground. Toriel, disgusted by his actions, retrieved the fallen human's body and left for the Ruins. Sometime after the fallen human fell in 201X, six humans climbed Mount Ebott, fell into the underground, and died. It is unknown how far they had made through the underground, aside from all of them leaving the Ruins. Each of them had their associated items, but it is unknown why they climbed the mountain or how the items were scattered. Asgore collected each of their SOULs for later use, placing the humans' bodies in coffins in New Home's basement. The protagonist is the eighth human to fall, and their SOUL is the last one needed to break the barrier permanently. Neutral Route The coffins holding the bodies of previous fallen humans are found in New Home. The fallen human's coffin is empty, as Toriel took their body with her to the Ruins. Toriel presumably buried them under the flowerbed of golden flowers, which is where the protagonist is found at at the start of Undertale. Near the end of the Neutral Route, Asgore reveals the six human SOULs, which Flowey ultimately absorbs to become Omega Flowey. During six segments of Omega Flowey's fight, each human SOUL attacks the protagonist's SOUL, using attacks themed after their associated items found throughout the game. Pressing the ACT button that appears during each segment prompts the protagonist to call for help. Each SOUL then answers the protagonist's call and aids them with healing green attacks. Flowey's defense drops slightly every time the protagonist calls to one of the SOULs for help. After the protagonist defeats him, Flowey tries to repeatedly reload his SAVE to reload the game and finish the protagonist, but the human SOULs eventually intervene and betray him, reverting him to his original form. After the credits, Sans calls and tells the protagonist that the SOULs have disappeared, precluding the plan of breaking the barrier with them. True Pacifist Route On the True Pacifist Route, Toriel tells Asgore that he only needed one SOUL to leave the underground and that he could have spared the other fallen humans if he had peacefully collected the other six from the surface. Flowey absorbs the six human SOULs and most of monsterkind's SOULs to transform into Asriel. Shortly after, Asriel becomes the "God of Hyperdeath" and battles the protagonist. After the protagonist saves the Lost Souls, Asriel reverts to his childlike form, destroys the barrier, and releases the SOULs. During the epilogue, the protagonist finds that the coffins in New Home's basement are now open, and that the fallen human's coffin has mummy wrappings inside. Genocide Route After the protagonist kills Undyne the Undying, she mentions that Alphys will instruct Asgore to absorb the six human SOULs, likely in order to defeat the protagonist. The six human SOULs, barring the fallen human, do not appear in any capacity by the end of the route outside of the coffins found in New Home. At the end of the Genocide Route, the fallen human appears in person. They state that "determination" and a "human soul" brought them back from death, and that with guidance they realized the purpose of this reincarnation was power. The fallen human attacks the screen, dealing unreadable levels of damage, and the game closes (on the console versions, the screen blacks out for 30 seconds until howling wind is heard). After launching it again, the fallen human appears after ten minutes and offers to recreate the world in exchange for a SOUL. W. D. GASTER Pronouns he/him Also known as Doctor W.D. Gaster (Gaster follower 2) Dr. Gaster (Gaster follower 3 and Gaster follower 1) Gaster (enemy data) Relationships Asgore (former superior) Alphys (former assistant, successor as royal scientist) Gaster followers Battle information HP 666666 (datamined stats) AT 66666 DF 66666 EXP on kill -6666 GOLD on win -6666 W.D. Gaster (JP: W.D. ガスター) is a hidden character in Undertale. During normal gameplay, he is typically unmentioned. However, rare fun value events and certain inaccessible rooms hint at his existence. This includes room_gaster. Similarly to Sans and Papyrus's dialogue, some text associated with Gaster uses a unique typeface, namely Wingdings. Profile Etymology "W.D. Gaster" is presumably derived from the font "Wingdings" (the font ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN is written in). It could also be a reference to "M.D. Seeger", the alias of Shigeru Miyamoto used in the ending credits of EarthBound. Main story History Gaster was the royal scientist preceding Alphys. He was supposedly responsible for the creation of the CORE and is stated to have had "irreplaceable" brilliance. His fate is relayed by the Gaster followers: one of them claims that he "fell into his creation", the other claims that "his experiments went wrong", and the third one claims he was "shattered across time and space". Hints room_gaster In room_gaster (room 264 in most versions and room 265 in the Xbox version), the text below is displayed in uppercase Wingdings. While it appears to be the missing seventeenth lab entry from the True Lab, this could be a red herring, as there was an alternate seventeenth entry in the game's files prior to version 1.001–4. The alternate entry heavily aligns with Alphys's entries, as it mirrors her entry format, writing style, and correlates with her determination experiments. Both entries are inaccessible in normal gameplay; Alphys's entry can only be found in the game's text files, and Gaster's entry is only accessible through SAVE manipulation or debug mode. In sequential room order, room_gaster immediately follows the generator room in the True Lab, and is immediately before the mysterious door. ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN is written in all caps, with no preceding asterisk. Transliteration of the Wingdings text is as follows: ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN DARK DARKER YET DARKER THE DARKNESS KEEPS GROWING THE SHADOWS CUTTING DEEPER PHOTON READINGS NEGATIVE THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT SEEMS VERY VERY INTERESTING ... WHAT DO YOU TWO THINK Once the message ends, the screen turns black for a second before the game closes. The audio that plays during the entry is internally referred to as mus_smile. This file can be sped up by 1000% to reveal Muffet's laugh, reversed and then looped over. The voice bites used in this room (snd_wngdng1 through snd_wngdng7) are excerpts from the text-to-speech voices used in abc_123_a. "The man who speaks in hands" During one of the travels with River Person, they say "Beware of the man who speaks in hands." It is speculated that this alludes to Gaster, since the Wingdings typeface used in room_gaster uses hand symbols. A similar line from the River Person is "Beware of the man who came from the other world." Considering the similarities it shares with the previous quote, it may refer either to Gaster or Sans, who is implied to have knowledge of alternate timelines. Sound Test room If the fun value is 65 and Papyrus has been defeated, there is a 50% chance the player can enter the Sound Test room by going north of the "Box Road" SAVE Point in Snowdin (or by exiting room_water_redacted regardless of fun value). This "room" is a menu containing four short, looping tracks, including Gaster's Theme; none of the tracks are used anywhere else in the game. Upon selecting Gaster's Theme, the other three songs are unable to be selected again. After Gaster's Theme plays for 20 seconds, the text "Thanks for your feedback! Be seeing you soon!" is displayed, and the protagonist is transported into the room with the fishing pole in Snowdin. If the player came from room_water_redacted, the game crashes. In the game files, Gaster's Theme is named mus_st_him, unlike the other rooms in the sound test that have their song names explicitly shown (such as mus_st_happytown). Outside of Undertale Merchandise A Gaster card was originally included in the Undertale tarot card collection designed by Dogbomber, as IX - The Hermit. When the collection became officially licensed. This card used the mystery man's design for Gaster. However, Gaster's card was replaced by Gerson, which indicates that this card is not canon. Toby Fox has also stated the merchandise is not canon. It was possible to search the term "Gaster" in Fangamer's search engine and yield a result for the Blaster Pin. This keyword association was removed on November 25, 2025, making it no longer possible. Deltarune An excerpt of ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN, reading "THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT SEEMS VERY VERY INTERESTING", was featured on Deltarune's website in 2015, written in the Windgings font. In 2016, the excerpt was replaced with a paraphrase from the prophecy in Wingdings. The images were named him.png, paralleling the filename of Gaster's Theme, mus_st_him. In Deltarune itself, ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN's first paragraph, "DARK DARKER YET DARKER", is referenced by Seam and Ralsei. Likewise, a hymn about the prophecy references the entry with the line "of the shadows cutting deep". mus_smile is used as the "garbage noise" that plays when the Cell Phone is used in a Dark World. It can also be heard near the Shelter south of Hometown and in the basement of Noelle's House, at 15% speed. Additionally, ANOTHER HIM, the track that plays when directed by the introductory voice to create a vessel, shares its naming convention with the filename for Gaster's Theme. Trivia Attempting to name the fallen human "Gaster" causes the game to return to the intro. If the protagonist's name is changed to "Gaster" through the SAVE files, the ability to reset becomes unavailable as the game restarts upon clicking the Reset button. Gaster is heavily associated with the Number of the Beast (666), repeating 6s, or the number 6 in general. The global.typer value for the text in ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN is 666. Gaster's global.monstertype value is 666. Gaster's unused battle stats found through datamining are all repeating 6s. All fun value events directly related to Gaster are within the 60s range. The fake hallway and room_mysteryman in Waterfall are accessible when the fun value is 66 - the only possible fun value with repeating 6s. Locations The surface (JP: ちじょう) is the region of the Earth where humans live separate from the monsters, who reside in the underground. Both species are separated by the barrier on Mount Ebott since The War of Humans and Monsters. During the True Pacifist ending credits, parts of the surface are shown: a beach, an urban city, a school where Toriel and Asgore work, and Mt. Ebott. Mount Ebott (JP: イビト山) is a mountain on the surface of the Earth. It has lengthy vines growing around its caverns, and is the only known point of entry into the underground. It is depicted at the beginning of Undertale's intro and in the True Pacifist ending credits. Starting from the year 201X, eight humans fell through Mt. Ebott's barrier and entered the underground's Ruins. The underground (JP: ちていのせかい) is the primary setting of Undertale. It is a large region within Mount Ebott that is separated from the surface of the Earth. It houses the Kingdom of Monsters, who are ruled by King Asgore, and formerly by his ex-wife, Toriel. The underground has varying terrain and climates, and features five main areas: the Ruins, the frigid and wintery Snowdin, the marshy and cavernous Waterfall, the blistery and barren Hotland, and the Capital. The underground's exit is blocked by the barrier, which was placed by the humans long ago. Anything and anyone can enter the underground by descending into Mount Ebott. The Underground locations: Ruins locations Ruins Home (Old Capital) Toriel's home Spider Bake Sale Snowdin locations Snowdin Forest Snowdin Town Papyrus and Sans's house Grillby's Librarby Inn Shop Mysterious door Dog Shrine Waterfall locations Waterfall Undyne's house Garbage dump Temmie Village Blook Acres Artifact room Hotland locations Hotland Lab MTT Resort True Lab Art Club room Spider Bake Sale Hotland High CORE New Home locations New Home (Capital) Asgore's Home Last Corridor The Barrier The whole plot: Long before the events of the game, humans and monsters ruled the Earth together. Some humans, however, feared monsterkind's sole strength against them - a monster absorbing a human SOUL, which was said to result in a being of incredible power. Eventually, this fear culminated in humans attacking the monsters. Humans and monsters alike were reluctant to fight in the ensuing war, and the sides were mixed. According to monster legend, the humans had an advantage: the SOULs of nearly every monster combined were only as strong as one human SOUL. Countless monsters were killed in the war, without a single human SOUL taken. Few monsters survived, one of which was Gerson. In the 10th Anniversary Stream, Gerson further elaborates on the war at the end of the True Pacifist Route epilogue. He recalls how both humans and monsters had interspecific marriages, and that business partnerships were commonplace. There is also a rumor that humans had used all their magic to create the barrier, though Gerson was not present at the time the barrier was created. Gerson recalls that the documented details from the war have omitted important details, which had ended up being misremembered, forgotten, or deliberately changed. He also admits that he is unsure if humans will get along with monsters in the surface. After a long battle, the humans ultimately won, and monsters were banished into the underground. They gathered seven of their greatest magicians to create a barrier that was erected to prevent insiders from leaving, though outsiders could still freely enter. Wary of humans, monsters retreated into the Ruins and adopted Home as their first capital, living normal lives in the underground from then on. Additionally, the Ruins was structured to contain diversions in the form of puzzles. At an unspecified point in time, monsters documented the war, regarding SOULs and the Delta Rune's prophecy on plaques on Waterfall's walls. One day, the fallen human ascended Mt. Ebott and tripped on a vine, causing them to fall inside the underground. The human was discovered by Asriel, Asgore and Toriel's son, and subsequently adopted into their family. The fallen human's presence brought hope to monsters. Eventually, no longer fearing humans, monsters ventured outside of the Ruins. They populated the rest of the underground, and made New Home their new capital. In contrast to Home, some monsters were content to settle at different locations than in New Home. From Waterfall, monsters acquired modern technology and discarded items from the surface. At some point, the CORE was built by W.D. Gaster to generate electric power for the entirety of the underground. One day, the fallen human grew ill and requested to see the golden flowers in their home village. After they died, Asriel absorbed their SOUL and became a powerful entity who could cross the barrier. The fallen human, sharing the body with Asriel, carried their corpse to their home village. The humans attacked Asriel and the human, under the assumption that Asriel had killed the human child. Refusing to retaliate, Asriel returned to the underground with the human's corpse. He died at New Home's garden, where he succumbed to his wounds. Since then, Asgore became vengeful, declaring another war on humanity and plotting to escape the underground. He decreed all humans who fall into the underground be killed and their SOULs collected; with seven human SOULs, the barrier would be shattered. However, the brutality of this decision disgusted Toriel, who relinquished her position as queen and left Asgore. Asgore continued to rule the land on his own, while Toriel exiled herself into the Ruins. More puzzles were created across the underground to foil human attacks. New Home begun having issues with overcrowding. Over time, six more humans fell into the underground, all of whom Toriel attempted to shelter and care for. They all eventually left the Ruins and were killed, their SOULs collected by Asgore. At one point, the Royal Guard, led by Undyne, was formed to patrol the underground for humans. Alphys, the new Royal Scientist, surveys the underground through hidden cameras to control Hotland's puzzles, and to warn and evacuate monsterkind if needed. An eighth human, the protagonist, had then fallen into the underground. Unlike their predecessors, the protagonist's determination carried them through many obstacles the underground had presented, even managing to befriend or kill many monsters. Eventually, the protagonist manages to reach Asgore, where he stands before the barrier. These are the following paths that could happen: On the Neutral Route, the protagonist and Asgore battle. The latter is defeated, after which Flowey intervenes and absorbs the six human SOULs. The protagonist defeats the powered-up Flowey and is transported outside the barrier after the battle, leaving the underground. Sans then calls the protagonist and tells them the fate of the underground, which varies depending on who was killed. On the True Pacifist Route, Asgore is stopped by Toriel and the friends the protagonist made. Then, all of them are ambushed by Flowey, who absorbs the six human SOULs as well as the SOULs of most monsters in the underground, transforming into his true form, Asriel. However, with all the SOULs, Asriel gains compassion and ultimately loses the will to fight, instead using the SOULs' power to shatter the barrier. Asriel returns the SOULs, knowing that he will turn back into Flowey, and begs the protagonist to forget him. The monsters leave the underground and live peaceful lives on the surface. On the Genocide Route, certain monsters try to stop the protagonist's rampage while Alphys leads the evacuation. Upon reaching Asgore, the protagonist instantly defeats him with one blow and proceeds to destroy Flowey mercilessly. The fallen human appears before the protagonist and explains that their determination brought them back to life. With the protagonist's guidance, they realized that the true purpose of their reincarnation was to gain power. The fallen human then, with or without the protagonist's consent, uses that power to destroy the world. Whatever can happen before or after each story, it's up to YOU. Soundtrack
