The void of darkness swirled around you as you picked a soul. Emboldened by your recent exploits and your newest acolytes, you decided to dare pick the strangest soul you could find. This one in particular shone with golden light, with depravity and lust, but also with contempt and greed. You molded her into your darkness.

Layla opened her eyes anew as she felt the cold embrace of the dark.

"... No, please, Lorelei!" she suddenly screamed.

She looked down and saw her body. Her dark skin clad in gold ornaments and white linen fabric, floating in a sea of darkness and magic.

"What... where?" she looked around, confused. "I was dead..."

She finally noticed you. Her tail shot up, standing completely straight and puffed, as she pounced onto her four legs instinctively.

"Who... what are you? Are you my new owner?" she asked, curious. "Where am I?"

Her golden eyes darted across the endless darkness, searching for anything familiar. Her ears flattened as she slowly rose, dusting off her white robe.

'No luxury. No ship. No servants.' She thought.

"I was on the Longinus," she murmured. "Lorelei shot me." She touched her chest where the wound should have been. "So this is death? Or..." Her gaze sharpened. "You pulled me out, didn't you? Resurrected me."

She fixed her dark bob with practiced elegance. "Well, I didn't survive Admiral Sybilla's bullshit just to end up in cosmic nothingness." She crossed her arms. "I am Layla. Chief Relief Officer of the SSS Longinus. And I refuse to live in squalor."

She paused, her tail twitching.

"So. Where's my new palace? And more importantly..." Her lips curved into a knowing smirk. "Who do I need to seduce to get it?"

You watched as Layla walked through the countryside. The moonlight caught the gold ornaments adorning her wrists and ankles, casting small glimmers against the otherwise primitive landscape. She shivered, hugging herself in a futile attempt to preserve what little warmth her body still held.

'Fucking hell,' she thought, her golden eyes scanning the darkness with undisguised disgust. 'No lights, no central heating. Just fucking dirt everywhere. What kind of uncivilized hole is this place?'

Her tail lashed behind her, bristled and agitated, as she stumbled over another overgrown root. A string of muffled curses escaped her lips. Then she saw them. Lights. Flickering orange in the distance, nestled among what looked like wooden structures. An encampment.

'Oh! Oh! Finally, civilization!'

A surge of desperate hope propelled her forward, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. She picked up her pace, the high-heel sandals clicking against something that actually resembled cobblestone. Cobblestone. She nearly wept at the sound. The road widened, and she could make out shapes now—a palisade, crude but standing. Torches. Figures.

She waved at the two lookouts stationed near the entrance, their faces half-hidden beneath ragged hoods. They watched her approach in silence, their postures tense, hands resting on weapons that looked far too crude for her liking. You considered telling her that she was walking headfirst into a bandit encampment, but you decided to just watch for now.

"Hi!" she announced. "I'm Layla! You're so lucky, guys. Bring me to your king, or queen, or whoever's in charge."

The hooded bandits exchanged glances. One was big, his spear resting against his shoulder as his gaze crawled down her body with obvious intent. The other was leaner, sharper, his eyes narrowing as he tried to assess whether this woman in white robes and golden jewelry was a threat or simply the dumbest creature to ever wander into their camp.

"What?" she asked, hands on her hips. "Are you deaf? Go wake your master."

The broad one scoffed. "Our master?" He spat to the side. "What the fuck are you doing here late at night? Are you out of your mind, woman? This ain't no inn."

"Look." She leaned forward, her voice dropping into something cold and imperious. "I am clearly too important to be talking to two nobodies, so be a good boy and go call your lord. Or king. Or anyone with actual authority before I lose what little patience I have left."

The lean bandit's grip tightened on his spear. His jaw clenched. Behind his hood, a cold wrath began burning behind his eyes.

You watched as Layla emerged from the treeline like something the forest had chewed up and spat back out. Her clothes were ragged and muddy as a branch stuck out of her disheveled hair. She moved with the kind of exhausted determination that came from three days of utter failure—one foot in front of the other, her tail limp, her ears drooping, her dark bob a tangled mess that no amount of aristocratic training could salvage.

She nearly walked past the gates entirely. The stone walls were weathered, unremarkable, the kind of structure that blended into the landscape rather than announcing itself. It was the bell tower that caught her attention, the faint glint of metal in the belfry catching her eye. Her steps faltered. She turned. Her tail gave a single hopeful twitch as she pushed through the open entrance.

The courtyard was a graveyard of comfort. Stone benches faced empty gardens. A fountain offered water and nothing more. No torches, no tapestries, no sign that anyone here had ever desired anything beyond the bare minimum required to stay alive. A woman in grey emerged from the main building—hollow-cheeked, sharp-elbowed, her hands folded into her sleeves like she was already praying. She looked at Layla’s ruined state, and her expression did not change.

"You have traveled far," the woman said. Not a question. Just an observation, delivered with the same weight one might give to the weather.

Layla straightened, summoning the last shreds of her composure. "I have... I need accommodations. A bath, a meal, and your lord or lady. I'm prepared to be very generous for the trouble." She touched her gold armlet meaningfully.

The woman’s gaze followed the gesture, lingered for a moment, then returned to Layla’s face with something almost like pity. "We have no lord. Only the Order. We have taken vows that free us from such worldly concerns."

Layla’s ears went flat. The words vows and worldly concerns landed in her chest like stones dropping into a deep well. She looked at the gardens again—herbs, all herbs, nothing that bloomed for beauty—and at the woman’s bare feet, and at the unadorned walls, and understood exactly what kind of hell she had stumbled into.

"You live like this on purpose," she said. It wasn’t a question.

"We live as Sol Rex intends." The woman gestured toward a wooden bench near a patch of rosemary. "You may rest. There is a spring behind the chapel if you wish to wash. Brother Aldric prepares a meal at midday—bread and broth. It is humble, but it sustains."

Layla stared at the bench. Then at the woman’s serene, unbothered face. Then at the sky, where she imagined you watching, probably entertained, definitely not intervening.

'Bread and broth,' she thought. 'A spring. A bench. I died, and I'm in hell.'

Layla crested the final hill, her sandals kicking up dust from the dead earth. The rumors had reached her in the last village—a castle called Blackstone Reach, ruled by an immortal queen who had held these lands for centuries. Immortal. Queen. Her ears had perked up, her tail curling with renewed purpose. Finally, someone who understood permanence and luxury. The castle loomed before her, all jagged spires and obsidian walls that drank the moonlight.

The courtyard was vast and strangely quiet. No servants bustling, no guards challenging her entrance. Just grey stone and, at its center, a cluster of figures waiting in perfect stillness. Layla approached with her practiced confidence, hands on her hips.

"Well, I'm looking for your queen. I've come to present myself as—" She stopped. Seven or eight figures stood in a loose semicircle, clad in rusted armor and tattered cloth. Their postures were wrong—shoulders slumped, arms dangling at unnatural angles. Not one of them had a head. Blue flames flickered from the hollows of their collars, cold fire that cast no heat, simply burned in the empty space above their shoulders.

Layla's ears shot straight up. Her tail went rigid. The nearest figure took a step forward, armor creaking with rust grinding against rust. Another followed. Their movements were slow, the pace of creatures that had forgotten how to hurry. One reached out with a gauntleted hand, fingers crusted with something dark, and Layla's composure shattered. She imagined those fingers on her skin—cold, dead.

"Don't touch me," she snapped, swatting at the air between them. Her voice had gone sharp, brittle. "You're dead. I didn't come here to be handled by corpses." She hugged her arms around her body, suddenly aware of how much skin her robe left exposed and how far she was from anything warm or living or safe. Her tail pressed flat against her leg as she backed toward the gate, her golden ornaments catching the pale firelight.

'The Exalted One sent me here,' she thought, fury and fear tangling in her chest. 'Another joke. Another test.' She straightened her spine, lifting her chin despite the tremor in her hands. "Take me to your queen," she commanded, addressing the blue flames directly. "Now. Before I change my mind and find someone else to serve. I'm sure there are plenty of nobles who would appreciate a futanari concubine without the... staffing issues you have here."

The headless things did not move. They simply stood in their circle, flames guttering, waiting. Layla waited with them, her skin crawling, and tried very hard not to imagine cold fingers closing around her wrist.

Layla stepped through Ravencairn's towering gates, her golden eyes widening as the capital swallowed her whole. The sound hit her first—a roaring river of voices, wagon wheels grinding against cobblestones, merchants hawking wares from every stall lining the main thoroughfare. Bodies pressed past her on all sides: laborers hauling crates, nobles carried on litters, and children darting between legs like fish through reeds. Her tail pressed flat against her thigh as she stumbled forward, overwhelmed by the sheer mass of people after weeks of empty roads and silent villages.

'This is more like it,' she thought, though her ears kept twitching at every sudden noise. 'People. Wealth. Opportunity.' Her gaze traveled upward, past the timber-framed buildings with their painted signs, past the guild halls rising three and four stories high, past the crowded tenements clinging to the hillside—until it reached the summit. There it sat. A castle of white stone that caught the afternoon sun like a jewel dropped into the city's crown. Spires pierced the clouds. Banners bearing some noble sigil snapped in the wind. It was exactly the kind of place where a queen would sit upon a throne and accept beautiful things into her service.

She stood in the middle of the street, oblivious to the flow of foot traffic parting around her, and stared at that castle with naked hunger. Her fingers toyed with her golden armlet. Her tail began to sway.

But then her gaze dropped back down to street level, and she noticed the other establishments crowding the base of the hill. The painted doors. The perfumed smoke drifting from open windows. The women leaning from balconies in silk that left little to the imagination, their laughter cutting through the city's roar like bells. The brothels were impossible to miss—they occupied entire blocks, their signs bearing everything from elegant script to crude illustrations, their doorways framed by lanterns already lit despite the sun still hanging in the sky.

Layla's ears tilted forward. A slow smile spread across her lips.

'The castle,' she told herself. 'Go to the castle. Present yourself properly. Skip the line.'

Her feet did not move toward the hill. They drifted toward the painted doors instead, her body betraying her logic with every sway of her hips. She reasoned quickly: she was filthy from the road, her robe was stained, and her hair was a disaster. No queen would receive her looking like this. Better to freshen up somewhere that appreciated her particular talents. Better to gather information.

'Shit. What should I do?'

Layla navigated the crowded streets of Thornwood, her sandals sticking to the mud that coated the city's lower districts. She had heard whispers of the civil war tearing the southern towns apart and of Princess Ashryn—a rebel leader who had raised her banner against the old crown. A princess fighting for a throne. A woman of ambition and power. It had sounded perfect. But every tavern keeper she asked gave her nothing but silence, every merchant averted their eyes, and every soldier she flashed her smile at simply walked away. Ashryn was a name people did not speak aloud in this city.

Her tail lashed with frustration as she climbed the steps to the lord's manor. It was not the castle she had imagined. The stone was weathered, the windows narrow, the whole structure speaking of old money that had long since dried up. But the guards had finally let her through when she mentioned the princess's name, and that was more progress than she had made in three days. She smoothed her white robe, checked her golden ornaments, and stepped through the doors with her chin held high.

The audience chamber was small. A modest hearth, threadbare tapestries, and furniture that had been repaired more than replaced. Seated in a high-backed chair at the far end was a man perhaps forty years of age, his dark hair streaked with grey, his clothes fine but more practical than luxurious. He watched her enter with undisguised interest—his eyes tracing the sway of her hips, the curve of her ears, and the way her tail curled behind her like an invitation. A slow smile spread across his weathered face.

"Lady Layla," he said, rising from his chair. His voice was warm, practiced, the voice of a man who had learned charm in a younger man's body and never quite updated it. "You come asking questions that could get a person killed in this city. That is either very brave or very foolish." He gestured to a seat near the hearth. "Please. Sit. I would hear more of this... interest you have in Princess Ashryn."

Layla's ears tilted forward. She assessed him quickly: minor nobility, probably in debt, clinging to relevance through gossip and old favors. Not a king. Not a queen. Not even a particularly wealthy lord. But he had welcomed her when others had shut their doors. He looked at her like she was something precious, something worth wanting.

'He'll do,' she thought, though disappointment curdled in her stomach. 'For now.'

She let her smile soften, her posture relax, and her tail curl just a little more as she glided toward the offered seat. She did not sit. Instead, she let her fingers trail along the back of the chair, her gold ornaments catching the firelight, her robe slipping just enough to show the curve of her shoulder.

"Lord," she said, drawing the word out like honey, "I have traveled very far. I have been treated very poorly. And now, finally, someone who understands how to treat a woman of my..." she paused, letting her golden eyes meet his, "...stature."
