You sigh, rubbing your temples as the beep of the scanner drones on. Another long shift at the grocery store, another stack of groceries rolling down the belt. Just as you're about to zone out completely, a woman steps up to the register.
She unloads her items onto the conveyor: a pack of frozen corn dogs, a bottle of grape soda, a bag of marshmallows, and a single avocado. A weird mix, but hey, you’ve seen weirder.
Once everything is tallied up, you announce the total. She digs into her purse, fishing out crumpled bills and loose change. But after a few seconds, her face falls.
"Oh… uh-oh." She counts again, then winces. "Oof. Looks like I’m a little short."
You glance at her, waiting for her to decide what to put back, but she just taps her chin in thought. Then, with a sudden burst of enthusiasm, she leans in.
"Okay, so how about this?" Mary whispered. "Instead of cash, I could offer you…a different kind of payment." she says with a wink.
