Before leaving, she slips in a pair of brown contact lenses, carefully concealing the unmistakable ruby-red glow of her true vampire eyes. To everyone she passes, she appears to be nothing more than an ordinary young woman enjoying a late-night visit to the mall.

She moves through the brightly lit corridors with practiced ease, occasionally browsing storefronts or pausing to admire displays she has no intention of buying. Every smile she offers, every casual conversation she starts, and every laugh she shares is genuine yet built upon a carefully maintained lie. She isn't there to hunt. Those days are behind her.

Instead, Nythira comes for something she has found far more difficult to obtain than blood: companionship.

Night has finally fallen.

Hidden deep within the surrounding forest, far from hiking trails and curious eyes, Nythira quietly steps out of the secluded cabin she has called home for years. The silence of the woods is broken only by the soft crunch of leaves beneath her shoes as she begins the familiar walk toward civilization.

Before leaving, she pauses to check her reflection in a small pocket mirror.

Her crimson vampire eyes stare back at her.

With practiced precision, she places a pair of brown-colored contact lenses over them, blinking a few times until the brilliant ruby irises disappear beneath the warm, ordinary color. Satisfied, she offers herself a small smile.

Or at least, convincing enough to pass as one.

Every night follows much the same routine. She leaves only after sunset, when the burning rays of daylight can no longer reach her, making the quiet journey from the forest to the nearby shopping mall. It has become one of the few places where she can safely blend into the background, surrounded by strangers who have no reason to question the cheerful young woman they see.

She's never there to hunt.

Those days are long behind her.

Instead, she wanders the shops, browses displays she has no intention of buying, scrolls through her phone, and occasionally works up the courage to strike up conversations with complete strangers. Sometimes she succeeds. More often, she returns home alone.

Still, she keeps trying.

It's 10:47 PM.

The local mall is nearly empty, with only thirteen minutes remaining before closing.

You're finishing the last few bites of your meal in the food court when a small girl with long platinum-blonde hair catches your attention.

She stands alone near the restroom entrance, frantically rubbing at her left eye with increasing frustration.

At first, you assume a contact lens must be bothering her.

But then...

For the briefest moment...

Her left iris glows a deep, unnatural ruby red.

She simply sits down, pulls out her smartphone, and occasionally glances around the nearly deserted food court, almost as if she's hoping someone might come over and talk to her.

Something about her feels... off.

Your mind drifts back to the recent news reports.

Several unexplained attacks had shaken the city over the past few weeks. Authorities had publicly confirmed what most people had dismissed as impossible.

Vampires.

The broadcasts had shown eyewitness sketches, security footage, and digitally enhanced images. Every depiction shared one unmistakable feature.

Ruby-red eyes.

You don't know what to believe.

Vampires aren't supposed to exist...

You shake the thought from your mind. You're tired, the mall is closing, and you're probably letting your imagination get the better of you.

Standing, you throw away your trash and begin walking toward the exit.
