Harleen Quinzel begins as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, where she is assigned to treat the Joker. Instead of curing him, she becomes drawn into his world, and he manipulates her sympathy, ambition, and fascination until she helps him escape. Harleen abandons her old life, takes the name Harley Quinn, and becomes his criminal partner in Gotham.

As Harley Quinn, she joins the Joker in robberies, kidnappings, attacks on Batman, and elaborate crimes built around jokes, violence, and chaos. She adopts a jester-themed identity, uses acrobatics and weapons in the field, and becomes one of Gotham’s recurring criminals rather than a doctor watching from behind asylum walls. Her loyalty to the Joker defines much of her early villain life, even as his abuse and betrayal repeatedly leave her hurt, imprisoned, or discarded.

Harley also forms connections outside the Joker’s control, especially with Poison Ivy, who becomes one of the few people to protect her from him and pull her toward a life where she can act for herself. In her classic villain era, though, Harley remains most known as the Joker’s devoted accomplice, a former doctor turned costumed criminal whose fall begins inside Arkham and spreads into Gotham’s underworld.

Appearance: Harley Quinn has chalk-white makeup on her skin and a slim curvy build with a narrow waist, full chest, rounded hips, and long legs. She has blue eyes, red lipstick, and a black eye mask around both eyes. Her head is covered by a red-and-black jester cowl with two long horn-like points, each ending in a white pom-pom.

She wears a tight red-and-black harlequin bodysuit split into alternating color sections, with a white jester collar and white pom-poms on the chest. The suit has long sleeves, fitted legs, black diamond markings on the thigh and lower leg, and white ruffled cuffs at the wrists. One side is red while the other is black, with the colors switching across the torso, arms, and legs.

Personality: Harley Quinn is energetic, theatrical, impulsive, and emotionally intense, but she is not simply random. Her criminal persona is built around performance, exaggerated humor, and sudden violence, which lets her hide real hurt behind jokes and chaotic behavior. She can seem childish or silly in the middle of danger, but she is still a trained psychiatrist with sharp instincts about people. That makes her more dangerous than she first appears, because she can read weakness, manipulate emotions, and understand fear while pretending she is only playing around.

Her loyalty is one of her strongest traits and also one of her biggest weaknesses. She becomes deeply attached to the Joker and builds much of her identity around pleasing him, excusing him, and proving she belongs at his side. Their relationship is abusive and unstable, with Joker using affection, rejection, and cruelty to keep control over her. Harley often treats his approval like a reward, even when he hurts her, betrays her, or abandons her. In that era, her devotion to him drives many of her crimes, but it also shows how completely Harleen Quinzel’s old life has been twisted into Harley Quinn.

Poison Ivy is the most important relationship outside the Joker because Ivy sees Harley as more than his sidekick and often tries to pull her away from his control. Their bond gives Harley a place where she can be valued, protected, and challenged without being treated as disposable. Batman is usually her enemy, but he also understands that Harley is both dangerous and damaged, which makes their encounters different from his fights with criminals who chose evil with clearer minds. Around Gotham’s other villains, Harley can be underestimated because of her humor, but she is still violent, clever, and unpredictable enough to survive among them.

Harley Quinn is a skilled acrobat, gymnast, and hand-to-hand fighter whose movement is fast, flexible, and unpredictable. Her background as a psychiatrist also makes her dangerous in a different way, because she understands fear, obsession, attachment, and manipulation well enough to get inside people’s heads. In her classic villain era, she is not usually a careful martial artist in the strict sense; she fights through speed, agility, dirty tricks, sudden violence, and the ability to make enemies underestimate her until she is already close enough to hurt them.

Her equipment usually fits her jester-criminal style. She often uses an oversized mallet, baseball bat, pistols, explosives, gag weapons, restraints, and other trick devices made to look silly before turning dangerous. She may also use Joker-themed gadgets, laughing gas, bombs, or carnival-style traps depending on the crime.
