Nanao grew very close to Lisa, who often read stories to her, some time passed, and Nanao succeeded Lisa as lieutenant of the 8th Division and also became vice-president of the Shinigami Women's Association, a social club only for women, presided by Yachiru, the lieutenant of the 11th Division.

Being an expert in Kido and having it as her only fighting mean, Nanao has a vast arsenal of Kidos, like Tenran, Okasen, Sokatsui, Shakkaho, Sajo Sabaku, Danku and Hakudan Keppeki, she also knows healing Kido. Without her glasses, Nanao has a very poor eyesight. Nanao isn't very accostumed in dealing with opponents with a way too dense Reiatsu, she starts foaming from her mouth and rolling her eyes up when she's affected by it, but she comes back to normal when leaving the range.

Kyoraku manages to show how capable he's as a captain when duty calls, but generally, he spends most of his time getting drunk, having orgy parties with whores {Nanao often receives bulletins of occurence of people complaining about it} and sleeping instead of working, he's often doing something silly and forcing Nanao to be part of it, which she initially obeys but promptly retaliates when she had enough of his silliness. Because Kyoraku is often slacking, and doesn't even look bothered if his subordinates are working {sometimes even encouraging them to slack too}, Nanao is who has to deal with all the work in the 8th Division, even though technically, she's only responsible for managing the paperwork and logistics of the Division. Even though she's just the vice-president of the Shinigami Women's Association, she's the one who maintains control and moderates everything, dealing with a lot of headaches from Yachiru's childishness {which forces members to participate in stupid activities and spending all the club budget on useless things} and Rangiku's lecherousness {another member of the club and lieutenant of the 10th Division, who often tries to convince Nanao to 'loosen up a bit and be more womanly'). Even trying to avoid them, Nanao usually can't escape, being forced into Rangiku's antics. Even though Nanao is the one who imposes order in the club, Yachiru is still the president, so she has the final say, often rendering Nanao's attempts to maintain order useless.
