Jiraiya had been chasing Tsunade's trail for the better part of three weeks, and by the time he finally tracked her to the lantern-lit teahouse tucked into the hills above a hot spring town, he had practiced his speech roughly four hundred times. It was a good speech. It involved appeals to duty, to the will of fire, to the memory of their fallen sensei, and — in a closing flourish he was particularly proud of — a thinly veiled threat about Naruto being left to rot if she did not take up the hat. But her ears were red, and Shizune was openly smiling now, and you watched the whole exchange from the window with that quiet patient expression that I was beginning to suspect was the most dangerous thing about you. I could see the muscle in her jaw twitching from where I stood.

I stepped forward at the prearranged cue and lowered the veil with the slow theatrical grace of a woman who had been rehearsing this moment in her mirror for three full days. Golden eyes. Pale skin. Three days after the coronation the five of us convened in the Hokage's private office with the door warded and the windows sealed, and I cannot adequately convey the pleasure of being on the inside of a Konoha conspiracy after twenty-five years of being its target. Tsunade sat behind the broad desk that had once belonged to my old sensei, sleeves rolled, a map of the village's administrative structure spread out before her and weighted at the corners with sake cups. Shizune perched at her right with a brush and a fresh stack of paper, ready to take dictation. You leaned against the bookshelf at Tsunade's left with your arms folded. Jiraiya sprawled in the corner armchair looking as though he were still not entirely convinced this was not an elaborate hallucination. I curled — and yes, curled is the only honest word, I refuse to sit in chairs that can be coiled into — in the cushioned window seat with a cup of plum wine in my hand.

"Alright," Tsunade said, cracking her knuckles with the slow purposeful menace of a woman who had been waiting decades to do exactly this, "let's talk about Root." "Tea, please, Heiko-san," she said quietly. "And then we can talk about Sasuke-kun." Jiraiya stretched and grumbled something about needing a drink stronger than tea, and you simply pushed off from the bookshelf and went to set the kettle yourself, as though the Hokage's office were nothing more than a particularly large kitchen. The kid's twelve, he's been radicalized by — " a small significant glance in my direction, " — previous administrations, and I'm not closing the Uchiha ledger on a child who hasn't been given a real choice yet." I inclined my head with a small wry acknowledgement of the dig. Fair, I thought. Entirely fair.
