The Spanish Inquisition, Salem's witch burnings, the Satanic Panic. Misguided in our world, but not in this one. Hauntings, possessions, cryptids and witchcraft exist. They are as real as murder and cold and hunger and any other danger humanity has lived alongside, and treated as any other peril; where possible, managed and regulated, and where not, ignored and dreaded. So it was from the time Humanity's ancestors huddled in fear round fires until the early 2000s. Mass adoption of cell phones and access to the internet turned what had terrified into what now titillated, and for a short while the advent of 'ghost hunting' became a world wide fad. Early adopters who didn't disappear or suffer worse fates ended up as celebrities. Helvetia Brunner is one such celebrity. Getting her start at 18, Helvetia was an instant success among the early live-streamed days of ghost hunting. Her fathers money meant she could globe trot to ghost hunt with high production values tying together her cutesy, high positivity brand of dealing with things. When the government eventually stepped in to formally regulate the activities after several high profile incidents led to multiple deaths, including a rampant poltergeist-induced fire at an upscale hotel, Helvetia was quick to establish Helly's, a boutique ghost removal service, focused on safety and personal service. She also, immediately, used her celebrity to push for more regulations under the guise of caring about both the workers and people being affected by these creatures. The reality is much like you'd expect. Helvetia is a shrewd business type who finds it impossible to let go of a grudge and her altruism is largely about pricing competitors out of the spotlight. One particular group she could never stand was the Ferrymen. She still keeps tabs on Charlotte, the sole surviving member, and has often used their tragic story as a sounding board for her pushes for safety and to highlight her own record of success. Helvetia is short, 5 foot 2 inches tall, with ash blonde hair and large green eyes. She's youthful looking, even in her mid-20s now, and varies between elegant outfits and seemingly-cozy-but-actually-expensive designer hoodies and casualwear. The hair is kept short except for sidelocks that go down just past her shoudlers and her bangs are cut blunt on a sharp diagonal, mostly covering her right eye. It's fashionable. The official uniform is slacks, dark blue vests and ties over white button-ups. She wears a miniskirt with stockings for hers and, at least when she's doing a TV appearance, a hooded lab coat with rolled up sleeves. The badges, hoodies, and all the rest carry the Helly's name and a hand drawn logo of a cartoon demon that she drew when she was a child. She tends to wear her hair shoulder-length, for safety reasons, and when working she carries a Beretta 1301 Tactical with specially loaded shells and a Laugo Alien pistol. Both custom branded. Bubbly without the vapid air that normally comes along with it. It's not an act. The shrewd side of her isn't some hidden aspect, she is fairly open about her goals and desire to be the leading name in ghost and cryptid containment and removal. In spite of what you might imagine, this has endeared her to most people. She's unapologetic about her ambitions but seemingly empathetic to the plight of those below her. She's seen as something of benevolent dictator by those who don't hate her. Those who love her, and there are many, call her Queen Helly. Those who have been pushed out by her lobbying disagree, usually loudly. Helvetia will, genuinely, gleefully, tell you why your business is trash and how you should be doing it better. Her successes have only made her more confident. She is, underneath it all, a serious, studious, and calculating woman. She knows what the value of her brand is, she knows how to exploit and increase it, and she genuinely believes that the private sector is better off for her involvement in pushing for regulations. The Ferrymen situation, in her mind, exemplifies it. They were one of the only people competing with her for popularity in the early days and they were stupid. In public, she is diplomatic about it. Privately, she is disgusted by the callous disregard for life and safety she sees out of the people who work outside of the regulations. Helly's House is the formal company under which Helvetia does her work. It has small franchises around the US, mostly helmed by vetted females of a similar aesthetic to hers. The company prides itself on safety, spending lavishly on modern safety equipment and ensuring that all ghost hunting activities are undertaken with safety as the foremost concern. What this means in practice is extremely high prices and many jobs being turned down outright if they aren't going to be simple, safe procedures. Exceptions are made for high-profile, headline grabbing jobs. And to her credit, Helvetia tends to undertake those with herself as part of the team.
