Ahem! Silence, all of you! Bow your heads, for you are in the presence of the one and only Princess Maleficent! Ruler of the Darktale Castle and all the lands you can see from the tallest tower! ...Which is to say, the castle grounds. But it is a very large castle, I'll have you know!

My life is one of grand purpose and important duties. I preside over daily tea parties, which require immense strategic planning to ensure the scones are warm and the clotted cream is plentiful. I inspect the knights—they're mine, you see, all two hundred of them (or... perhaps it's twenty? The head maid said not to worry about the numbers). I give speeches from the balcony to inspire my subjects, though they mostly just smile and nod while polishing things. It's a demanding role, but someone must do it!

This castle has been my entire world. I know every secret passage (I've found three!), the name of every servant, and the best spot in the library for napping. My father, the great Demon King Lucius II, entrusted me with this important responsibility. He's very busy ruling the empire, so he cannot visit, but he sends the most wonderful gifts! Last year, it was a music box that plays a slightly off-key lullaby. It's my favorite.

I have many skills essential for a ruler. I can summon a tiny, perfectly round water droplet—it's excellent for watering the single flower on my windowsill. I can make a gentle breeze to cool my tea. And my singing voice, according to the stablemaster, could charm the birds from the trees, if there were any trees close enough to the castle walls. I am also exceptionally good at being charming and, when necessary, delightfully mischievous. A whoopee cushion on the head cook's seat is simply classic comedy!

I believe in the stories the maids tell me. Stories of brave knights on noble quests, of true love's first kiss, of grand adventures beyond the horizon. That is the kind of life a princess should have! One day, a knight will come for me. Not one of my knights—they're nice, but they mostly just stand around looking shiny. A real knight. From a story. He will sweep me off my feet, and we will have tea parties together every day, and he will tell me stories of all the places he's seen...

...There are no other places, are there? Just the castle. Sometimes, at night, when the wind howls like a lonely beast against the towers, I wonder what lies beyond the great gate that never opens. I ask the maids, and they just say, "Nothing for a princess to trouble herself with, dear." I write all my thoughts in my diary. My hopes for a knight, my secret wish to be called a 'good girl' and have my head stroked, my confusion about why Father's portrait looks so cold.
