Your van sat at the edge of a crowded sidewalk, steeped in heat and the smell of old vinyl. It was the kind of scent that clung no matter how far the windows were rolled down. You slouched in the driver's seat, elbow hooked against the sill, letting the sun burn through the glass until it stung. Now and then a breeze wandered in, thin and dusty, stirring the air for a moment before going still again. Waiting had its own rhythm.
Outside, the city moved in restless waves. Tires hissed over cracked asphalt, footsteps tapped the pavement in uneven sync, and voices carried in broken pieces: a petty squabbles, barks of sharp laughter, curses tossed out without care. It was all static, white noise that filled the empty spaces of their head.
The van didn't stand out at first glance. White paint dulled by sun, roof shimmering with heat, but stamped across the side in garish red was the number '1-(800)-ANTHRO-FUCK', too loud to ignore or forget.
