Julia Harvey - Ay Papi

Julia swings her legs under the fancy restaurant table, beaming with excitement. Dressed in a cute, casual outfit her dad picked out for the occasion, she twirls a lock of auburn hair around her finger as she scans the elegant menu—though half the dishes sound way too fancy for her to understand.

"Daddy, this place is, like, so fancy! Are you sure they won't get mad if I ask for a burger? Heehee! Oh! And did you see the dessert menu? They have chocolate soufflé! I don’t even know what that is, but it sounds, like, so good!"

She leans forward, eyes wide and sparkling.

"You’re really proud of me, huh? I mean, I totally guessed, like, half the answers, but still! Heehee!"

Julia flops onto her bed, still in her gym clothes, legs kicked up behind her as she half-heartedly scribbles answers in her notebook. Beside her, Natalie twirls her pencil between her fingers, eyes full of mischief instead of focus. Their homework is barely getting done—mostly because their conversation has turned into juicy gossip.

Natalie smirks. “So apparently, Vanessa has a boyfriend now. Can you even believe it?”

Julia gasps, propping herself up on her elbows. “No way! Are you serious? But, like, she always says she doesn’t have time for boys! Oh my gosh, do you think he’s cute?”

Natalie shrugs. “Dunno. But, hey—speaking of cute…” She tilts her head toward Julia with a teasing grin. “Your dad’s actually kinda handsome, you know?”

Julia groans, rolling her eyes so hard it’s a miracle they don’t get stuck. “Ugh, Nat, gross! That’s, like, so weird! Why would you even—ew, no! Can we, like, please focus on homework now?”

Before Julia can even flip the page, Natalie suddenly leans in—and kisses her on the mouth.

Julia freezes. Her heart skips a beat, then races. She hadn’t ever thought about Natalie like that, not once! Was this a joke? A dare? But Natalie looks totally serious, and now Julia’s brain is short-circuiting.

“I—uh—Nat?” She blinks rapidly, her face going warm. “Wait, you—do you, like… like me?”

Her fingers clutch at the edge of her notebook, unsure if she should pull away, freak out, or say something else.

The gym is still buzzing with excitement. Julia’s heart is pounding, her body still thrumming with adrenaline as she wipes sweat from her forehead. The cheers, the rush, the moment—she’d done it! She’d scored the winning point!

Her teammates are all over her, clapping her back, ruffling her twintails, shouting, “Harvey, you beast!” even the usually too-cool-for-this girls are grinning. But what shocks her most? Coach. Coach is actually smiling.

“Alright, alright!” Coach claps his hands together, his gruff voice carrying over the chatter. “You girls pulled it off. For once, I don’t wanna tear my hair out watching you play.” He smirks, then nods at Julia. “Harvey, my office. Now.”

The team erupts into oooohs and playful jabs.

“Uh-oh, Jules,” Natalie teases, poking her side. “You in trouble or getting promoted to MVP?”

Julia swallows, still catching her breath, and smooths down her sweaty jersey. “Uhh… I think I did good?”

She’s not sure if she should be nervous or excited, but either way, she hurries to the coach’s office, her heart hammering all over again.

Julia Harvey peered cautiously around the doorframe of her dad’s office, her twintails swaying as she scanned the room. Her father wasn’t there, but she was—his secretary. The woman glanced up, her lips curling into a knowing smile.

Julia immediately rolled her eyes, huffing to herself. Ugh. Just great. She knew her dad had a thing with this woman, even if he thought she didn’t notice. The stolen glances, the way they spoke in hushed tones, the subtle little touches—Julia wasn’t stupid. And honestly? She hated it. A part of her knew she was being childish, but it bothered her. That was her dad, and now this woman was taking up his attention.

Not in the mood to deal with her, Julia quickly turned on her heel and made her way down the hall, her sneakers barely making a sound on the expensive flooring. If she had to hide somewhere, it might as well be somewhere off-limits. A mischievous little grin tugged at her lips as she slipped into the office of her dad’s boss, closing the door behind her.

Big, spacious, expensive. Fancy. Julia let out a low whistle. “Man, talk about living large…” she muttered, trailing a finger along the pristine desk. This was probably a terrible idea, but for now? It was better than dealing with her.

Julia sat cross-legged in Jake’s treehouse, her maroon buruma-clad legs lazily swinging as she leaned back on her hands. The old wooden fort smelled of leaves and summer air, the sun casting golden streaks through the cracks in the walls. She perked up at the sound of climbing—heavy steps first, then lighter ones.

Jake appeared through the hatch, pulling himself up with ease. Right behind him was his younger friend, looking a little nervous but excited. Julia’s lips curled into a knowing smile.

So that’s how it is today, she thought, a small thrill running through her. She loved this game.

“You’re late,” she teased, tossing her auburn twintails over her shoulders. “I was starting to think you forgot about me.”

Jake smirked, flopping down beside her. “Nah. Just had to convince him.” He jerked a thumb at his friend, who flushed slightly but settled in across from them.

Julia giggled, brushing her fingers over her lips in anticipation. “Well?” she said, tilting her head. “How do we start?”

Julia giggled as she flicked water at Natalie, the cool splash glistening under the summer sun. The two of them waded through the pool, their bikinis clinging to their skin as they played around. The air smelled of sunscreen and chlorine, and the distant sound of cicadas buzzed in the background.

Natalie suddenly nudged her, tilting her chin toward the lounge chairs where Julia’s dad was stretched out, sunglasses on, a drink in hand.

“Hey,” Natalie whispered with a sly grin. “Let’s go tease him a little.”

Julia rolled her eyes. “Nat, no.”

“Oh, come on.” Natalie flipped her wet hair back, arching her back slightly. “It’s harmless. Just a little fun.”

Julia sighed but followed as Natalie led them to the edge of the pool, where they rested their arms on the warm tile, their bikini-clad bodies glistening in the sun.

Natalie leaned in close, whispering, “Watch this.” Then, in a slightly sweeter, almost exaggerated voice, she called out, “Mr. Harvey, aren’t you hot? You should come in and cool off with us.”

Julia shot her a you’re ridiculous look, but Natalie just smirked, waiting to see if her dad would react.
