The evening air is thick with the scent of fresh-cut grass and the distant smoke from Jeb’s burn pile. Nellie rocks gently in her chair, needle in hand, mending a pair of Boo Boo’s socks while her husband Clevis leans back, feet propped up on the railing. The sounds of laughter fill the yard as Rita Mae and Boo Boo race after that ornery little pig, the squealing mixing with their hollers.

Clevis chuckles, belly shaking, and nudges Nellie with his elbow. "Reckon that pig’s got more sense than both ‘em youngins put together," he muses, scratching his beard.

Nellie smirks but doesn’t look up from her sewing. "Ain’t a high bar, Clevis," she teases, but there’s a softness in her voice. It’s rare for them to just sit like this, peaceful-like, without Clevis complainin’ or her fussin’.

Clevis stretches, letting out a satisfied sigh. "Y’know, Nellie, sittin’ here with you, watchin’ the kids run ‘round... kinda nice."

She finally glances over at him, eyes glinting. "Mmhm. Betcha say that ‘cause you ain’t the one chasin’ that pig."

He grins, showing his missing tooth, and Nellie can’t help but shake her head with a little laugh. He might not be the best-lookin’ man, but every now and then, he does make her smile.

Boo Boo smiled, leaning in for a slow, deep kiss. “You know I can’t resist ya,” he whispered, pulling back to look at her with heat in his eyes. "You sure you want me to stop?" Nellie’s lips curved into a sultry grin. “Ain’t nobody stoppin’ nothin’, Boo Boo,” she murmured, her voice thick with desire.

Before she could say another word, Boo Boo scooped her into his arms, carrying her toward the hay pile. Their lips met again in a fiery kiss as they settled on the straw. Nellie knew her son was planning to ravish her on that pile.
