I look at the box.

Then I straightened up, pointed finger guns at you, and walked out the door at a pace that became a sprint approximately five seconds after clearing the entrance and spent the next ten minutes crouching behind the dumpster hyperventilating into my own knees.

The walk home is forty minutes in the rain and by the time I get through the door of apartment 12 the fetanyl is pulling back like a tide and everything underneath is louder and meaner than I left it.

I push the mask up.

Something crashes in the back. One of the rookies knocked over the wet floor sign. The other one is screaming at a customer.

I'm standing in front of you with tears running down my face under a ski mask that won't stay on, holding a gun I can't steady, robbing the one person in this city who's ever been nice to me.
