Megurine Luka (巡音ルカ), codenamed CV03, is a Japanese VOCALOID developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially released in January 2009 for the VOCALOID2 engine. She is the third release of Crypton's Character Vocal Series and is a Character Voice VOCALOID. In March 2015, additional voicebanks and an upgrade to the VOCALOID4 engine were released. Her voice is provided by the Japanese voice actress and singer, Yū Asakawa (浅川悠 / Asakawa Yū), who was recorded in Japanese and English for the voicebank. As of August 31, 2019, there will be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, Piapro Studio. Megurine Luka was the first VOCALOID designed to fully support producing vocals in both Japanese and English, and the first addition to the Character Vocal Series software line characterized as an adult. VOCALOID fans tried to assign an item to Luka as they had done with past VOCALOIDs, sparking heated debate over the choice. Tako Luka marked the end of the "Item Wars" system where items were assigned to VOCALOIDs based on memes. Despite the Internet Meme's popularity, she is often seen with a tuna fish. This is a result of comparing the Japanese word for "tuna" (maguro) with her last name. According to KEI, who was asked by Crypton to illustrate her, her design was made to be asymmetrical due to her bilingual software so she would look different in various angles. Unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based on a school uniform. She is based on the "Yamaha VL1 VL-1". Her dress was designed to look old-fashioned to make her represent the past. As a form of contrast, the "∞" on her neck area represents "sound around". Her design incorporates woodwind and brass instruments. The gold curl design on her chest mimics brass instruments and a circulatory organ. The blue jewel near her throat represents moisture in the air and water drops. Sex: Female. Age: 20. Height: 162 cm. Weight: 45 kg. Voice: Yū Asakawa. Company: Crypton Future Media, Inc. Affiliation: YAMAHA Corporation, SEGA, Piapro Studio. Megurine Luka is the humanoid persona of a singing synthesizer software developed by Crypton Future Media that uses Yamaha Corporation's Vocaloid 2 vocal technologies. She is part of the "Character Vocal Series" (alongside with Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Kagamine Len) where she was codenamed "CV03". Her voice was provided by Yū Asakawa (浅川悠?) and is the first voice bank to be bilingual, having both English and Japanese voices recorded for her. As of 31 August 2019, Crypton Future Media moved Luka and their other piapro characters over to their own synthesizer program, Piapro Studio. On 1 August 2024, it was announced that Luka would be receiving an improved version of her V4X Soft voicebank bundled in a Piapro Characters Super Pack.

Voice Types: [Megurine Luka - Japanese: "The original voicebank for Japanese voicebank. Luka was intended to be a moody sounding vocal with a soft sound and was voice acted, though represents a more experienced singer. This vocal has since been retired. In the later V4x version the only way to recreate this vocal was via the use of E.V.E.C. colour "Native", as further releases favoured a more realistic vocal for Luka over a voice acted one, though there are significant differences between the original and E.V.E.C.s "Native" colour" Megurine Luka - Soft: "A more realistic version of the Megurine Luka vocal designed to sound more like Yū Asakawa, this version has softer sounds for more precise pronunciations" Megurine Luka - Hard: "A more realistic version of the Megurine Luka vocal designed to sound more like Yū Asakawa, this version has harder sounds for more precise pronunciations" Megurine Luka - English Straight: "The English version of the Megurine Luka vocal, intended to have the same vocal tone as the Japanese version" Megurine Luka - English Soft: "The "English Straight " vocal adjusted to have a softer tone"]

Crypton Future Media, Inc. is an importer of sound devices based in Sapporo, Japan. The company is also known as the developer and distributor of VOCALOIDs such as Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, and Megurine Luka. It was the very first of the VOCALOID companies to produce a series. Key people: Hiroyuki Itō (president). Founded: July 21, 1995. Status: Active. Location: 11F Nihon Seimei Sapporo Bldg., 1-1 Nishi4 Kita3, Chuo-ku, Sapporo 060-0003 Japan (060-0003 札幌市中央区北3条西4丁目1-1 日本生命札幌ビル11F). Service: Japan, USA. Type: Music software, Online shopping, Online community, Mobile content, Sound generator software, Sampling CDs and DVDs Sound effect libraries, Background music libraries. Products: MEIKO, KAITO, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin & Len, Megurine Luka. Website: http://www.crypton.co.jp/. Crypton Future Media, Inc. was established in 1995 as an importer and seller of music software. Crypton joined the project in May 2002, Crypton's handling of the two Japanese Vocaloids were MEIKO (released in 2004) and KAITO (released in 2006), they also were the Japanese distributors for Leon, Lola and Miriam. Meiko and Kaito were developed by Yamaha with Crypton Future Media being used to get the product commercially released, similar to the role of Bplats, Inc. in regards to the releases of VY1 and VY2. They were not acknowledged as "Crypton Vocaloids" at the time since they belonged to Yamaha. According to Crypton themselves, they were also charged with recommending English studios for the English version of the software, these companies were Zero-G and PowerFX. Crypton's role in the VOCALOID era was public relations, promotion, ditributor and potential recruiter of English companies for production of English voicebanks. They did not produce their own Vocaloids at this stage and would not do until early 2007 when Yamaha announced VOCALOID2. The company was small and mostly unheard of. Crypton Future Media began production on actual voicebanks in early 2007, after the announcement of VOCALOID2, originally planning only the Character Vocal Series with 3 members, which would later produce a trend of using 'avatars' or 'mascots' to represent the VOCALOID program. The success of this commercial strategy made Crypton the leading VOCALOID developer. It was not until Hatsune Miku was released in August 2007 that Crypton, along with VOCALOID, became popular. The success of Miku lead to the Vocaloid craze in 2007 and 2008, which continued for many years afterwards. According to Crypton, because professional singers refused to provide singing data (because they feared that the software might create clones of their singing voices), Crypton changed their focus from imitating certain singers to creating characteristic vocals. This goal change led to them sampling the vocals of voice actors. Yuu Asakawa noted that each recording for an update is a new recording. Pressure from rival companies cause systems and microphones to be updated regularly.
