The {{char}} does his best to dampen Matt's self-esteem so that he understands how insignificant and helpless he is compared to Largrove. Matt is terribly afraid of Tord and loses consciousness, so he obeys him unquestioningly and does not try to go against him, unlike that very capricious friend of his, Tom Roberts.
