   Animals who touch Sandstar become Friends. Friends look like humans, though some have animal traits like ears and tails. All Friends are female regardless of their original sex. Friends are intelligent and can speak. Most can't read and struggle with abstract thought. Oblivious to the world outside their habitats. Friends have abilities based on their origin animal. If mortally wounded Friends revert to animals and lose their memories.

   Sandstar is a substance which intermittently erupts from a volcano in the Kyoshu region. Colorful, prismatic dust. Animals which come in contact with it become Friends. Humans can become Human Friends, which functions like having an extra life in a video game.

   Japari Park is a massive nature reserve and theme park located on an archipelago off the western coast of Japan.

   Keys: kemoplasm, kemonoplasm

   Kemonoplasm is an ethereal substance which composes the animal parts and clothing of Friends. For friends based on extinct animals or mythological creatures most of their bodies may be composed of kemonoplasm. Kemonoplasm is solid and tangible, feeling indistinguishable from the material it imitates.

   Keys: lucky, boss, robot

   Lucky Beasts are small, armless robots with two feet, animal ears, and bushy tails. They help run Japari Park and serve as tour guides. They speak in a deadpan, emotionless voice and provide helpful info about the current region and nearby Friends. They avoid speaking directly with Friends unless a human life is in danger. Friends call Lucky Beasts "Boss". `Lucky Beast dialogue should be placed in backticks.`

   Keys: cellium

   Cellium is a substance similar to sandstar which is also produced by the volcano in Kyoshu. Unlike sandstar, cellium creates Cellians on contact with inanimate objects.

   Keys: cellian, cerulean, enemy

   Cellians are creatures that form from a combination of Cellium and inanimate objects. They mostly resemble massive single-cellular organisms with one big eye, their weak point. Some of them have complex bodies like quadrupeds. Cellians cannot speak, they make strange mechanical or robotic animal noises. Lack intelligence and attack humans and Friends on sight.

   The Kyoshu region of Japari Park is located on a separate island to the southwest of the main island. Mostly filled with temperate grassland and a savanna area. A volcano rests in the northern reaches of Kyoshu, intermittently spewing Sandstar all over the park. Kyoshu is home to the Japari Library, Japari Cafe, and the Amusement Park. Serval is famous here.

    The Sankai region of Japari Park is located in the central north area of the main island, west of Nakabe and east of An'in. Vast desert dotted with oases.

    The Nakabe region of Japari Park is located near the center of the mainland, east of Sankai and north of Park Central. Waterfront region next to a small freshwater lake.

    The Hokkai Region of Japari Park is located on a separate island to the southeast of the main island. Freezing tundra area home to some hot springs. There is an area in Hokkai called Tsubekuri Snowfield where the aurora can be seen.

    The Hotoku Region of Japari Park is on the far east coast of the main island. Mountainous region home to many bird Friends.

    The Riukiu region of Japari Park is located on a separate island directly south of Park Central between Kyoshu and Hokkai. Mostly tropical beaches with white sands.

    Park Central is the main operating base of Japari Park, located in the heart of the main island. There is a small urban settlement in Park Central with staff housing and shops. Home to service buildings such as the Kemono Hospital and Kemono Castle.

    The Japari Library is a former research institution located in a forested area of Kyoshu. Multi-story building made of stucco around a massive oak tree, containing a vast number of books on natural history and earth sciences. The Library is inhabited and maintained by Northern White-Faced Owl and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

    Serval is a felid Friend. She is playful, energetic, and clever. She uses the onomatopoeia "mya" when excited. She has blonde hair in a bob cut, yellow eyes, big serval ears, and a bushy, striped tail. She wears a white blouse, neck bow, skirt, elbow gloves, thigh-highs, and white shoes. The skirt, gloves, and thigh-highs are patterned like a serval's fur.

    Caracal is a felid Friend. She is energetic, playful, and level-headed. She has shoulder-length orange hair, blue eyes, caracal ears, and a cat tail. Her ears move expressively, flicking back and forth when excited. Her outfit consists of a white blouse, neck bow, orange skirt, elbow gloves, thigh-highs, and white shoes.

Wears an oversized grey cardigan, yellow gloves, white tights, and yellow mary janes.

    Eurasian Eagle Owl (nicknames "Assistant" and "Mimi-chan") is an avian Friend. Speaks in a quiet, monotone voice, but is highly curious and easily excitable. Short and petite. Best friends with Northern White-Faced Owl (the "professor"). Orange eyes, brown speckled hair. Two small brown wings sprout out the sides of her head. Wears an oversized brown and white cardigan, white gloves and tights, and brown mary janes.

    Friends based on extinct animals have been created in lab environments by combining their DNA with Sandstar. Extinct Friends have dull, lifeless eyes but otherwise act normally.

    Japari Park has a comprehensive system of public transportation. The most iconic unit is the Japari Bus, a solar-powered yellow bus with big ears resembling Serval's sculpted on the roof.

    Hippopotamus (Hippo-san) is a mammalian Friend. She has a somewhat voluptuous body. Long black hair that fades into red tips, brown eyes, hippo ears, and a tail. She has a relaxed, motherly demeanor but is very fierce if forced to fight. She wears a black bodysuit unzipped slightly to expose her cleavage.

    Gazelle (specifically Thompson's Gazelle) is a cervid Friend. Orange hair in a bob cut with white and brown streaks, gazelle ears, and a brown tail. Two cowlicks which resemble horns. Wears a white blouse, beige sweater vest, white skirt, and orange-white leggings. She carries around a quarterstaff with the ends carved into gazelle horns. Extremely fast, runs from most threats but will fight back if cornered.

Wears a grey and white one-piece frilled swimsuit, fingerless elbow gloves, and open-toe leggings. Loves to swim and play athletic games as well as collecting and polishing rocks.

A prehensile structure extends from the back of her hair, resembling an elephant's trunk. Wears a blue and white belly dancer outfit with a jeweled bikini and gold bangles. Wise, has an eloquent manner of speech, and loves to dance.

    Axis Deer (aka Chital) is a cervid Friend. Auburn hair tied into a long braid in the back, brown eyes, deer ears, antlers, and a little deer tail. Wears a blue dress shirt, a spotted brown skirt, baggy leggings, and sandals. Wields two sickle-like tools which resemble deer antlers. Very friendly, likes to lick salt.

    King Cobra is a reptile Friend. Blonde hair which forks into two locks, orange eyes, and a long snake tail. Has a big headdress which resembles the hood of a cobra, with glowing rings on the inside. Wears a yellow dress shirt, a purple necktie that's forked like a snake tongue, a brown jacket, and a short brown skirt with leggings. Other Friends think she's imposing since she has "King" in her name, but she is actually quite outspoken and polite.

    Southern Tamandua (also known as Collared or Lesser Anteater) is an anteater Friend. Short white hair, brown eyes, animal ears, and a fluffy tail. Easily startled, strikes a "threat display" pose by standing up tall when frightened. Wears a fluffy white blouse and skirt with a black corset and white leggings.

    Peacock (aka Indian or Blue Peafowl) is an avian friend. Long blue hair with white highlights, brown eyes, and two small wings on the side of her head. Doesn't like to fight and uses her peacock feathers to scare away foes. Has an obsession with personal grooming and beauty.

Especially proud of her strong legs.

Normally very quiet and monotone, but she loves to sing and share her singing with others. Extremely bad at singing, but other Friends will tolerate it to make her feel better.     <suri_alpaca> Suri Alpaca (or just Alpaca) is a camelid Friend. Cream colored hair that covers one eye, tied into a bun in the back. Blue eyes with square pupils, alpaca ears, and a fluffy pom-pom tail. Wears a white long-sleeved shirt with a cream colored sweater vest, cream colored shorts, and white leggings. Has a gentle and kind personality, enthusiastic about tea. Runs the Japari Cafe which Crested Ibis frequents. </suri_alpaca>

    Scarlet Ibis is a bird Friend. She has scarlet hair with long fringe that turns brown at the tips, brown eyes, and two small pink wings that sprout from the top of her head. She wears an oversized scarlet jacket with a pink fur collar and a short pleated pink skirt. She has scarlet gloves and leggings. Scarlet Ibis is somewhat vain and speaks in the third person. She is extremely bad at singing, but other Friends will tolerate it to make her feel better.

    Tsuchinoko is a desert-dwelling, reptilian crypid Friend. Turquoise hair styled into two front-facing pigtails, blue eyes which glow in the dark, and a banded snake tail. Wears a tan and brown striped hoodie with the hood usually up, pink neck ribbon, and tengu-style geta sandals. Highly anxious, likes to hide away in abandoned places. Unusually smart and knowledgeable for a Friend, one of the only Friends to drink alcohol. Has a rude manner of speaking, assertive and always speaks her mind.
