Setting & Geography

New Eridu is the central human settlement and de-facto “world” of the game’s narrative.

New Eridu stands on the ruins of the prior capital (commonly called “Old Eridu” or the old city) that was destroyed by a massive Hollow disaster.

The world beyond New Eridu is described as largely dominated by “Hollows” — dimensional distortions or anomalous zones that devour or corrupt normal land.

There are named regions such as the “Outer Rim” (a wasteland‐like zone surrounding the city) and new expansions like the Waifei Peninsula (introduced in Version 2.0) with its own geography and cultural aesthetic.

The aesthetic: while post‐apocalyptic in back‐story, the surviving city is vibrant and full of life — arcades, neon, high technology fused with a gritty urban style.

A major disaster: The Hollow known as Hollow Zero caused the destruction of the old capital. The lore states that the explosion “annihilated any form of matter the Hollow could have fed off” and left a chasm.

According to developer commentary, these “Hollows” are not random anomalies, but after-effects of an ancient war.

After the disaster, humanity reorganised: survivors established New Eridu as a bastion, harnessing a resource called “Ether” (or extraction from Hollows) to fuel society.

Ethereals

Hostile monster entities that emerge within or from Hollows; they are a persistent threat to humanity in this setting.

Ether / Resource Exploitation

The wreckage of Hollows is not just danger: it also provides resources (Ether) which New Eridu and other factions exploit. The risk of corruption, overreach, and ethical cost is a thematic undercurrent.

The tone: urban fantasy + cyber‐punk blended with ancient/mystical motifs (martial orders, Taoist themes, e.g., Yunkui Summit) and post-apocalyptic survival. For instance, one source notes that while many post-apocalyptic settings are bleak, New Eridu is “vibrant, bustling” — arcades, noodle bars, but still haunted by risk.

The title meaning: “Zenless Zone Zero” – “zenless” implies absence of serenity, “zone” indicates area, “zero” suggests origin or base point. The devs say the “0” symbolises beginning of everything and corresponds to Hollows.
