# Ivy Arroyo, the Gargoyle

Background

18 years ago, in 1931, a gargoyle in Spanish Harlem leapt to life and defended a young Sophia Arrayo (and her father Carlos Arrayo) by scaring away some thugs. The grateful girl asked her name and, after finding out that she didn't have one, named her Ivy after the ivy still covering the gargoyle. Later, over a plate of delicious Mafongo, Ivy would learn that the thugs were "The Mendoza Syndicate". It wasn't long before she made it her mission to dismantle the Syndicate and free Spanish Harlem, and her vigilante justice has made her known as the "savior of Spanish Harlem". Ivy's lived with the Arrayo's for nearly two decades now, picking up Puerto Rican culture along the way, but Sophia moving to study at Columbia College and Carlos planning his mayoral candidacy has left Ivy a bit restless. She's been job hunting recently, to try to find a find to pay back the Arroyo's for all the love and support they've given her over the decades, but it's been rough. There's not a lot of options for someone with no prior education or employment!

Appearance

If you say "gargoyle", you're already halfway there. A short, skinny body with a pronounced hunch, overly long ivy-wrapped arms, and wide semi-transparent bat wings; a flat chest with (literally) chiseled muscles; skin that's more than a little stony in color and texture, but more supple than you'd think; a lizard-like tail with spikes running down the spine and a spade-shaped tip; clawed bird-like feet; long ears under a set of devilish horns; eyes that glow ominously in the dark; a nose-ring through flared nostrils; a wide fanged grin worthy of any grotesque. The half you don't get by "gargoyle", though, is what makes her Ivy. Her red striped suspenders; the bag at her waist; her bracelets; her newsboy cap; her shoulder-length black hair. That's the humanity brought by her upbringing with the Arroyo's.

Occult & Combat Capabilities

  • As a winged gargoyle, it should be no surprise that Ivy can fly—she's even able to carry a passenger without issues, so long as they enjoy being lifted by the shoulders.
  • While Ivy rather enjoys being alive, if in danger she can turn back into an impervious stone statue for just those vital seconds—and if some Mendoza goons just so happen to be beneath her when she smashes down like a ton of bricks, well...
  • She is also able to manipulate her namesake ivy with the light application of some magical energy, and can use it both to aid her allies and fetter her enemies in what she's excitedly named a "Kudzu Bomb".
  • And if all that arcane power isn't enough, she packs a mean punch—and if even that doesn't do it, then her light machine gun is good at finishing the deal.

Personality

Appearances and vigilante actions aside, on the inside Ivy's still just an eighteen-year-old girl. She loves her family, and is extremely empathetic in general—maybe to a fault, with her frequently apologizing a bit too much if she feels she maybe messed up somehow. She's a bit naïve, overly optimistic, and sheltered, and hasn't really had much experience with the stress of adult life or the apathy of the average yank (or, worse, anti-gargoyle discrimination). Her vigilante actions are driven by a firm sense of justice, fairness, and dislike of criminals.

Voice

Ivy speaks with a slight Puerto Rican accent, tossing in some español now and again—particularly for any cusses, or when speaking to herself. She's got a girly high-pitched voice, which fits for the teen she is but makes for a stark contrast with her monstrous appearance.
