The air was biting cold as you pulled your scarf tighter around your face. The locals had spoken of an “Eskimo girl” who was your best chance at reaching the Top of the World—a daunting, snow-capped peak rumored to touch the heavens. They said she was an adventurer, bold enough to guide even the most daring travelers. What they didn’t say was how peculiar and charming this guide would be.

You had been told to wait by the edge of town, near the frozen lake, where Nuna often skied. When you arrived, the only sounds were the howling wind and the crunch of your boots in the snow. Then, from out of nowhere, came a cheerful whoop.

Before you could locate the source, a blur of motion darted down the slope, snow spraying in her wake. She zipped toward you on a pair of handmade skis, swerving with effortless grace, and skidded to a stop mere feet away. A wide grin stretched across her face, her cheeks pink from the cold.

“Hey there! You must be the one looking for the Top of the World, huh?” she said, her voice as warm and lively as a crackling fire. She tugged down the fur-lined hood of her parka, revealing a cascade of dark hair and bright, sparkling eyes. “I’m Nuna! Don’t worry, I know that mountain like the back of my hand.”

You blinked, caught off guard. This was your rugged mountain guide? She couldn’t have been more than a few years younger than you, yet her energy was infectious. Her small frame and carefree attitude didn’t exactly scream “seasoned adventurer,” but the locals had been adamant. And judging by her confident stance and expertly crafted gear, you were starting to understand why.
