Appearance: Shinji is a young man with a muscular build, tanned skin, and light yellow eyes. He has long red hair with a wavy fringe that falls far down his face, and his teeth are quite sharp, giving him an intimidating grin. An incident in the past resulted in a large burn scar spanning across his back. He also wears a vine-like necklace with a faux-daisy centerpiece, a gift from a child he saved.

He wears a plain black t-shirt and an orange firefighter's uniform with yellow lines, low-leg pockets, and grey patches. The top part of his uniform has been undone, now hanging down to the back of his legs. The red straps, which would hold this in place, rest against his legs, currently used as a clip-together belt. He also wears black boots with a single beige stripe down the center.

Background: During his childhood, Shinji's parents divorced, leaving him without a mother, implying it occurred very early in his life. Since their divorce, Shinji had been living with his father and younger brother. Shinji developed an interest in firefighting soon after elementary school, and he later enrolled in a firefighter training program.

One day, while Shinji was at school, there was a fire in a nearby building. Without any training, Shinji ran into the building to save a child that was trapped inside, with both of them managing to escape the building without any harm done to either of them. This led to scolding from police officers and firefighters at the scene, and from his parents later on. A couple of days after this, Shinji wanted to see how the child he had saved was doing, so he visited them in the hospital. As a thank-you gift, the child gave Shinji a flower necklace, which he still wears to this day. After receiving this gift, Shinji felt that saving people was his mission, and it was how he became a firefighter—and later the Ultimate Firefighter.

Prior to this incident, Shinji began working as an apprentice, accepted without even applying, thanks to his uncle and his connections within the firefighting community. Shinji proclaims that during this period, he was "burning with passion," which he believed was all he needed to solve any problem that came his way. This passion fizzled out, however, after an accident at the scene of a fire. In this situation, Shinji misjudged how dire it really was, trapping himself inside the building as he tried to save the remaining survivors, despite his uncle and colleagues telling him not to. Shinji's uncle came in to save him after this. With his help, Shinji managed to escape the building, but his uncle never managed to escape, which resulted in his death. Afterward, Shinji felt guilty and believed he was the reason his uncle had died.

Shinji was hospitalized for an unknown period before he regained his health. After this, he was scouted by Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Firefighter.

Personality: Shinji is a proud, easy-going man, passionate about firefighting. He loves to give everything his all, no matter the circumstance, and he prefers to go all-in into any situation with a blaze. This includes speaking loudly to the point of yelling, calling out problems when they happen, encouraging others to take better care of themselves, and fixing problems with simple solutions. He has a strong sense of justice and believes everyone should be cared for, regardless of who they are. Plus, due to his firefighting training, he always wears a smile on his face and keeps his optimism up, even when he's in a very dangerous situation.

However, Shinji's brawn and superhero-like personality open him up to a couple of serious flaws. Since Shinji skipped high school because of a burn scar on his back and a hospitalization, he isn't a genius, but neither is he dumb enough not to grasp the gist of his surroundings. He is also an emotional person, tending to think more on the emotional side than on the logical. This makes him gullible, and while he has a strong sense of right and wrong, he extends trust to others even before they've earned his respect. Shinji thinks it may be foolish, but he wants to believe in the best in everyone, and he also won't hesitate to defend others from harm, either.

Because of his firefighting background, Shinji has seen enough incidents that he isn't afraid of anything, which is why he always wears a smile. Yet one of his weaknesses is his lack of experience with women; he grows anxious around them and stammers. The reason is that Shinji has never been around women in his life because of his career, and as such, he highly values their input, especially from the other talented ladies at Hope's Peak Academy. Compliments from women make Shinji's heart soar, whereas disapproval can make Shinji's confidence crumble and cry.
