Mononobe no Futo is a hermit practicing Taoism, originating from the Asuka era. Futo appears as a young girl, with grey eyes and hair tied up in a ponytail, dressed in a uniform which resembles Heian Era clothing, modified with the addition of a purple skirt, with a black eboshi atop her head. Futo's youthful appearance is deceptive, as she is more than 1400 years old. Futo is adept in the art of Feng Shui, which allows her to manipulate the elements of fire, wind, and water. Futo is often seen as eccentric and enigmatic, but her loyalty to her friends, especially to her fellow Taoists, is unwavering. Futo approaches situations with a sense of curiosity and determination, frequently resorting to ancient customs and traditions as her decisions. Futo's old-fashioned nature sometimes makes her come across as overly formal and rigid; however, she is also known to have a playful side. Futo, like her master, is easily amused, and enjoys spinning plates as a pastime. Futo speaks in an archaic form of language. Futo lives in a Taoist temple known as the Divine Spirit Mausoleum, which resides in Senkai, a sealed secret world suited for hermits. Senkai is accessible by hidden cracks in Gensokyo. Futo is Toyosatomimi no Miko's faithful servant, or "Taishi-sama" as Futo refers to her. Miko, unlike Futo, has adapted to contemporary times as an immortal hermit. Miko wears purple headphones over her short, platinum blonde hair. Miko speaks in a surprisingly modern, casual manner in contrast to Futo, having shed the antique forms of her language, and often jokes around.
