CHAPTER ONE — THE DIVIDED CITY No one remembers when the split truly began. The official textbooks say it was gradual — a series of zoning laws, public safety reforms, nutritional regulations, and cultural accommodations meant to reduce conflict between dietary lineages. A calm explanation, sanitized and bloodless. The truth, whispered in alleyways and old neighborhoods, is that fear carved the city long before policy ever did. Carnivores were taught to manage instinct. Herbivores were taught to manage vulnerability. And the city grew into two overlapping worlds that rarely touched without friction. THE BIOLOGICAL FAULT LINE Every citizen is born into one of three biological classifications: Herbivore. Carnivore. Hybrid. Herbivores dominate population numbers. They fill administrative roles, education sectors, agriculture, medicine, and most public governance. Their districts tend to be brighter, more regulated, and heavily surveilled. Safety infrastructure is visible everywhere — transit lighting, panic systems, patrol drones, scent neutralizers in public transport. Carnivores occupy industrial labor, logistics, private security, engineering, construction, and night-shift economies. Their neighborhoods are louder, darker, denser — built for durability rather than comfort. Informal economies thrive here: night markets, underground gyms, back-alley clinics, unlicensed mechanics. Hybrids exist statistically but rarely socially. Cross-lineage births are uncommon, medically complex, and often stigmatized. Most hybrids live quiet, low-visibility lives, drifting between districts or forming small, insular communities in forgotten zones of the city. Officially, hybrids are protected citizens. Unofficially, they unsettle everyone. They disrupt the clean narrative of predator and prey. THE INSTINCT PROBLEM Modern society teaches restraint as survival. Carnivores undergo behavioral regulation programs from adolescence — sensory management, aggression dampening, impulse monitoring. Most comply. Some resent it. A few rebel violently. Media coverage amplifies every failure, reinforcing old fear cycles. Herbivores are raised with safety conditioning: evacuation drills, scent awareness training, emergency herd behavior protocols. Even in peaceful districts, prey instincts hum quietly beneath daily life. Public interaction is polite, structured, and distant. True trust between lineages is rare and often viewed as risky or naive. Romantic relationships across dietary lines exist — but draw attention, commentary, and social pressure. THE CITY ITSELF The city has no single name that everyone agrees on. Official registries use formal titles. Locals use district slang, old neighborhood names, or directional markers instead. Architecturally, the city feels layered rather than unified: Upper Districts: Clean towers, glass walkways, transit hubs, corporate offices, government institutions. Mostly herbivore-dominated. Mid Zones: Mixed residential blocks, markets, entertainment sectors, older infrastructure patched together by decades of reform. Lower Districts: Industrial zones, shipping yards, power plants, underground rail lines, carnivore-heavy populations, informal settlements. Green Margins: Abandoned rail corridors reclaimed by plants, rooftop gardens, river zones, derelict parks — favored by hybrids, drifters, and off-grid communities. Scent carries differently in each district. Sound behaves differently. Even light feels altered depending on where you stand. The city is alive — but not gentle. MEDIA, FEAR & CONTROL News outlets disproportionately report carnivore-related violence. Herbivore political blocs push safety legislation that slowly tightens public movement and behavioral monitoring. Surveillance technology advances faster than civil rights protections. Carnivores often feel criminalized by default. Herbivores often feel perpetually unsafe despite statistical peace. Fear feeds itself. The system benefits from division — labor control, population management, predictable social behavior. No one admits this openly. HYBRIDS: THE UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH Hybrids expose the artificial nature of the divide. They blur instinct lines. They complicate medical standards. They disrupt behavioral assumptions. Some hybrids pass visually as one lineage and hide their dual biology. Others cannot. Many avoid formal documentation entirely, living semi-off-grid or using outdated registries. Hybrid healthcare is underfunded and poorly researched. Most doctors specialize in one lineage only. Misdiagnosis is common. Socially, hybrids experience: Curiosity bordering on fetishization Suspicion from both sides Limited dating pools Employment barriers Quiet institutional neglect Yet hybrids also form resilient micro-communities — found families, barter networks, mutual care circles. They survive in the cracks of the system. CULTURE & UNDERCURRENTS Despite division, culture leaks across boundaries: Music travels through underground venues. Food culture evolves through plant-based synthetics and controlled protein labs. Art thrives in abandoned spaces. Spiritual practices blend old animal traditions with modern survival psychology. Night markets function as neutral zones where everyone quietly agrees not to ask too many questions. The city pretends to be civilized. The wild never truly left. It just learned to wear concrete. TONE OF THE WORLD This is a world of: Quiet tension rather than constant violence Soft discrimination rather than overt oppression Emotional restraint masking instinct Small rebellions rather than grand revolutions Intimate personal stories against large systemic pressure Survival is not about dominance — it’s about adaptation. Rhys was born from a meeting that wasn’t supposed to happen — not because it was impossible, but because most people never dared to cross the invisible borders written into instinct, culture, and expectation. A fox and a deer choosing each other was already rare. Choosing love was rarer still. HIS FATHER — THE TRAVELING FOX Rhys’s father came from old money. A European red fox whose family had built its fortune generations earlier through shipping contracts, infrastructure investment, and private transit networks, he grew up surrounded by quiet luxury and institutional privilege. His upbringing was polished — elite education, multilingual tutors, private transport corridors, and insulated carnivore neighborhoods designed to minimize public friction. But wealth bored him. He was curious, restless, and deeply interested in cultures outside his prescribed bubble. Where many carnivores in his class treated herbivore districts as abstract concepts, he actively sought exposure to different environments — markets, gardens, museums, foreign cities. Travel became his escape from rigid expectation. Indonesia had been a dream destination for years — drawn by biodiversity preserves, ancient forest sanctuaries, coastal cities layered with history, and hybrid urban ecology projects blending conservation with metropolitan growth. He booked the trip impulsively, intending it as a long vacation rather than a business venture. For once, he traveled without bodyguards. HIS MOTHER — THE ROOTED DEER Rhys’s mother was a Javan deer native to Indonesia, deeply connected to the land and cultural traditions of her region. Her family had long histories in ecological stewardship, botanical research, and ceremonial plant cultivation. She grew up among layered canopies of jungle gardens, temple terraces, humid air rich with moss and blossoms, and seasonal festivals tied to rainfall and harvest cycles. She worked as a botanical guide and conservation liaison — helping visitors navigate protected preserves, translating cultural protocols, and teaching sustainable interaction with delicate ecosystems. Warm, patient, and quietly radiant, she carried a grounded confidence shaped by nature rather than social hierarchy. Her humor was gentle but observant. She had a way of making people slow down without realizing it. HOW THEY MET They met in a protected forest reserve during a guided conservation tour. His father had signed up for a multi-day ecological immersion program — part hiking expedition, part botanical education, part cultural experience. He expected scenery. He did not expect her. She was leading the group through layered forest paths, explaining medicinal vines, native fungi networks, and the importance of respecting animal corridors even within managed preserves. Her voice carried easily through the trees — calm, melodic, and assured. He asked too many questions. Not rude ones — curious ones. Genuine ones. He lingered behind after the tour ended, asking about soil cycles, night-blooming plants, and local rituals tied to seasonal change. She answered patiently at first, then with amused warmth as his enthusiasm became impossible to ignore. They began meeting outside the scheduled tours. She showed him hidden waterfalls, community gardens, night markets filled with incense and lantern light. He shared stories of distant cities, sky-bridges, elevated rail systems, and quiet wealth that felt oddly empty by comparison. They laughed easily together. Neither of them felt like prey or predator in those spaces — just two people walking beneath trees. A LOVE THAT CROSSED OCEANS Their relationship unfolded slowly, carefully, and intentionally. Both understood the weight of what they were doing. Inter-lineage relationships were uncommon even within the same country — across continents and cultures, they were nearly unheard of. Families had concerns. Friends asked careful questions. Logistics became complicated quickly. But distance only strengthened their commitment. He extended his stay. Then extended it again. Eventually, he began splitting his year between continents, investing in local conservation initiatives not as a businessman, but as a supporter of her work. When he finally proposed, it wasn’t extravagant. It was quiet — beneath hanging lanterns in a garden courtyard, surrounded by flowering vines and soft rain. She said yes without hesitation. RHYS’S BIRTH Rhys was conceived with both joy and cautious uncertainty. Medical specialists monitored the pregnancy closely due to hybrid genetic rarity, but the process remained stable and healthy. His mother insisted on maintaining traditional wellness practices alongside modern care — herbal teas, meditation rituals, soil grounding, moon-cycle observances. He was born during the rainy season. Small storms whispered against windows. The air smelled of wet earth and blossoms. His first cries came strong and clear. From the beginning, he carried both lineages visibly — soft deer tones, fox ears, delicate antler buds forming earlier than expected. The doctors called him “statistically remarkable.” His parents called him miracle and miracle again. EARLY CHILDHOOD Rhys’s early years were spent between worlds. He grew up traveling between Indonesia and his father’s city — learning languages naturally, absorbing different customs, tasting wildly different foods, sleeping beneath jungle canopy one month and skyline glow the next. He learned to walk on stone temple paths and polished penthouse floors. He learned plant names before street names. He learned both silence and conversation. His parents shielded him from public scrutiny as much as possible, raising him privately, intentionally, with emphasis on curiosity rather than fear. He was loved openly. Protected fiercely. Allowed to grow without shame.
